Issue 3 | May 2020
Business as Usual? Not Quite.
But we still have alternative options to help you with your RV and Towing needs.

We have been through a lot of challenges and changes since we opened in 1970, certainly this is new territory.

For the time being our door is locked but we are answering the phones and email. The shutdown which we fully support is affecting different parts of the store in different ways.

Units Stored : If you need a unit out of storage or are dropping one off. Please let us know and we can certainly facilitate that for you. If you are picking a unit up it may be a good idea to have the de-winterize process completed so that there are no surprises when you get it home.

Service : We are allowed to operate our service facility and have a few technicians working carefully at a distance to dewinterize units and complete winter repairs. As things open up it obviously won’t be business as usual and we are working to figure out what that will look like. At the moment the plan is to keep the service bays off limits to only those working in them and a few technicians who are high risk will be staying home both for their safety and to help maintain distancing in the shop. One dilemma moving forward is how long does a unit have to be empty before it is safe to work inside it and then how long should it be before it is returned to customers? There has only been one study of the life of the virus on surfaces and it has several interpretations hopefully there will be clarity soon.

Parts and accessories : We can supply parts by shipping them or you or we can arrange curbside pickup. If you are looking for a service part email a picture and any model or serial numbers you have. That is a huge help. partsb@canamrv.ca

Sales : I am quite amazed how many RV’s we are selling considering that we are closed. Our inventory is on-line with pictures of each unit and we can send you more pictures or even a video or skype. If you would like to see a unit as long as it has not been shown recently we can set it out where you can wander through. If you need delivery soon that can also be arranged. We are doing the interior walk through with video, the exterior can be done safely at a distance. As we open up more when allowed we will still likely have to do a great deal of our sales activity by appointment, but we will know better by the time we get there.
Most of our pre-owned and some new units are currently off the lot for front line medical staff who need to isolate from their families. At this time we are not certain when these brave people can move back in with their families and make these units available for sale but hopefully soon.

Thank you for your continuing and past support,

Andy & Kirk

ICU nurse Barbie Allen lives in an RV to protect her family from coronavirus. BY SAWYER BOGDAN, GLOBAL NEWS
With summer approaching, most people think of renting RVs for a weekend camping trip, but as the  COVID-19  pandemic continues, some health-care workers are moving into the mobile homes to protect their families.

The family-run Can-Am RV Centre in London, Ont., is offering its homes on wheels free of charge to those on the front lines.
“We just never know what we are going to go into day to day and hour to hour,” Barbie Allen, an intensive care nurse, told Global News. Allen has 32 years of experience as a nurse and, like many front-line workers, was feeling stressed about possibly bringing the virus that causes COVID-19 home to her family.
“I was staying away from them and in tears, not sleeping at all,” she said.

Allen’s son has asthma and has had to use a ventilator in the past, which Allen said puts him at higher risk during the pandemic. Having worked as a nurse in Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital during the SARS outbreak, Allen said the pandemic is unlike anything she has experienced before.
“We are all getting through the shifts on the verge of crying a lot but we get through it,” she said.

After the stress started to become too much, one of Allen’s friends suggested she reach out to Can-Am RV Centre to look into renting an RV.
Allen explains that after telling Kirk Thomson from Can-Am RV Centre about her situation, he immediately offered to help.
“When Barbie called, it was just like this light went off, and she started crying and I started crying,” Thomson said. Thomson offered Allen the RV free of charge, saying he “did not think it was right” to take money from people who are doing so much for the community.
Since getting the RV, Allen said it’s been a huge relief being able to see her family from a safe distance.
“I’m sleeping a lot better now,” she said.

Thomson tells Global News that his business’ initiative has since “exploded,” with 14 homes already delivered to people’s houses and six more set to go out this week.
“We have a police officer that needed to quarantine from his family. We had a paramedic, one truck driver who needed to travel back and forth to the United States,” Thomson said.
Right now, it takes the team at Can-Am RV three to eight hours to get the RVs ready for delivery, and Thomson said his team is working with reduced staff to try to maintain proper physical distancing.
“It’s so nice to be able to do something because you don’t realize how torn these front-line workers are, risking not only their own lives but the lives of their families,” he said.

Tech Tip: De-winterizing your RV

“Spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder how my RV is”

It is spring and the flowers are up, my lawn needs to have the first mowing and I am looking at my trailer in the driveway and thinking happy thoughts about being out camping, despite the current dark cloud of COVID 19 that we are enduring this season. For many trailer owners this is the time of year that they drop off their rig to Can Am to have it de-winterized. If you have time on your hands and a bit of mechanical aptitude this might be a good opportunity to learn how to de-winterize your travel trailer yourself.
In this article I am going to go through 10 steps that you can take to de-winterize your trailer and have it ready to roll for your next adventure. Click HERE for the full article.
Properly maintained your awning and RV will give you decades of trouble free service.

So you have just de-winterized your RV, it is fresh and clean and ready to hit the open road. One BIG obstacle...as of this writing Ontario Parks are still closed due to COVID 19. By now most families have spent a lot of time cooped up in the house and a little bit of outdoor time might be just what is needed.
The answer; camping at home. This can be a ton of fun and also a great way to "shake down" your RV for the first real road trip. Approach this just like you would as if you were going off to the Pinery. Kids have to pack the clothes, supplies, toys and activities that they would need for a weekend away. The rule can be that there is no going back into the house for 24 hours. Pack some food you could make in the RV and fill your freshwater tank and get ready for home away from home...at home. You can have a Bar-B-Que in the driveway or backyard and if permitted maybe a campfire. If you have a large terra cotta planter you can fill it with some small pieces of wood or some charcoal and have a tiny campfire just large enough to toast marshmellows and a hot dog on a stick. I've got some great s'more's recipes to share with you at the end of the article. Have your awning out and you can sit outside and have breakfast. Instead of a hike to the lake at a park you can still have a hike to the local park or even just around town. Instead of looking for shells and pinecones, in honour of the recent earth day, take a garbage bag, gloves and pick up trash in your local green space. I would also recommend using all the resources in your RV if possible. Microwave, shower, furnace etc. As all of us campers know, stuff always fails when you are miles from home. It might be nice to find any problems while still in your driveway. I guarantee this will be a fun family adventure and make some special memories for years to come and don't pass on this opportunity just because you don't have kids. Big kids of all ages will have a great weekend at Driveway Provincial Park.
How about a personal sized campfire in a terra-cotta plant pot lined in tin foil? Who says you can't have a great adventure at your home address!

Our Customer Spotlight: Peter and Heather Wenger
The picture of our 2019 Lance 2375 was taken at Darlington Provincial Park, last September. We travelled approximately 5000 km last year and loved how well the trailer towed. The week of Thanksgiving, we had the opportunity to spend time in Algonquin Park. We experienced how well the trailer was insulated and how little heat it needed to keep us toasty warm, even at -9. By the end of the season we only needed one of the cupboard doors adjusted. No other service was required.

Thank you Peter and Heather for sharing your photo and memories from last seasons adventures!
