From the Pastor
The Season of Advent
|
|
All around us our culture is proclaiming loudly the way to cultivate joy. Lights and song and elaborate dinners and fanciful decorations and splurging on presents for those we love. Yet in the Christian tradition we push back on culture a little as we observe Advent.
In this season of Advent we are preparing our hearts to celebrate the Incarnation as we focus on the themes of preparation and expectation. The depth of night is wearisome, but our hope lies on the horizon--the dawn of that new day when Christ will return to fulfill the heavenly realm on earth.
It’s hard to really focus on that isn’t it? Our culture doesn’t make room for it. Studies have shown that most of us will blow our budgets on decorations, travel, and Christmas presents, and that we’ll still be paying off the credit card debt when Easter comes. We sacrifice so much in pursuit of that perfect holiday moment, the perfect way to express or invite the love we long for. Let’s be honest with ourselves, anything that comes with a receipt will be largely forgotten or irrelevant before President’s Day. Spending money isn’t the medicine that will heal our hearts.
But if you’re serious about finding joy, I invite you into the way of Christ, who showed us a simpler way of living ordered by just one thing: love. So don’t get wrapped up in wrapping presents. Instead, let’s encourage one another to make time to be with those we cherish and hold dear. Let’s accompany each other in finding the lonely, serving the needy, and comforting the broken. Let’s spend words of kindness and cash in on moments together. May we find in this way of love the assurance of God’s perfect peace as we await the coming of Christ’s new day.
We can also pledge to engage our hearts. Perhaps you could pledge to greet a newcomer and make it your personal mission for 30 days to help them feel connected, engaged and valued. Or you could pledge to pray for a person each day this week and then write them a postcard to remind them that they are loved and appreciated exactly as they are.
I’m sure you can think of many more creative and expansive ways to do this. As we all share what we have, we will find that we have more than enough to care for one another as we make a difference in our community because Christ’s love multiplies the more we share.
What is one pledge you can do that will bring you deeper into our parish life and the love God is calling you into?
Grace and peace,
Tom+

Service Times
8 a.m. Sunday Service
This is a simple communion service without music using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship.
10 a.m. Sunday Service
The 10 a.m. service is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions.

Centering Prayer
One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In response to the enthusiasm growing around this feeling, our Centering Prayer gatherings are offered Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at noon. We hope that you will join us and see how contemplation can enrich your own experience.

St. Augustine in Transition
Profile Committee Update
December 2019
|
|
Goals
- To develop a Parish Profile that tells the story of St. Augustine
- To encourage as much parish participation as possible in this process
- To celebrate our gifts and identify the needs and challenges of our parish
- To ground our work in the Holy Spirit
Goals in Motion
- Thank you for your participation in the Town Hall November 17th.
- The Profile Committee continues to meet regularly Monday evenings 5:30 - 7 p.m.
- The Profile Committee will use from input from the Living Room Conversations, online survey, mentimeter activity and the SWOT activity.
- The responses from these gatherings will be used in the Parish Profile.
- The questions focused on parishioners' thoughts and dreams about the vision of St. Augustine.
Transition Prayer
Prayer is at the center of our Transition Process. The Transition Prayer below grounds us in the Holy Spirit and guides our work as we prepare a document which reflects the spirit, the strengths, the challenges and the hopes and dreams of St. Augustine Church.
Lord of all, we give thanks for what you have done as we listen to hear what you are calling us to be and do. We pray for our priests, Tom and Maryellen, our Vestry, and the person who will answer our call. We humbly ask for the wisdom and patience this process involves. Keep the eyes of our souls open and the ears of our hearts tuned to you. We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Hosting Coffee Hour is Easy!
All of us enjoy Coffee Hour after church. However, we need more volunteers to sign up to provide snacks. It is easy! Find a partner to share the experience. Keep it simple.
Although occasionally those who host provide a generous offering, that is NOT the expectation. Snacks can be simple finger foods such as: cookies, crackers, cheese, chips, veggies, fruit . . . you get it. You will need about 100 pieces.
TIP: Check out the big box stores for large packages.
Come early to set up, stay late to clean up. You do not have to worry about coffee and tea as those are provided by the Hospitality Coffee person. Look for the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Thank you for volunteering. If you have questions, please contact Camille Grabowski at:

Altar Flowers
We are ordering fresh flowers for the altar from the
Rocklin Flower Shop
on the corner of Stanford Ranch and Park Drive. If you wish to donate for altar flowers, please sign your name and the occasion (thanksgivings, memorial, anniversary, birthdays, etc.) on the sign-up sheet in the display rack near the office.
Please make checks payable to St. Augustine for $40 with ‘Altar Flowers’ in the memo line. Names of those giving flowers for special occasions will be acknowledged in the bulletin on the appropriate date.
Thank you.

For those new to the Episcopal tradition, the Vestry is the governing board for the congregation, and members serve three-year terms. There will be three Vestry vacancies for three-year terms beginning February 2020. The three candidates receiving the most votes will fill these seats. More information and nomination forms will be available at the Welcome Center on December 8

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
St. Augustine hosts the Gathering Inn guests on the second Wednesday of each month. We provide a hot meal and a place to sleep for 50 – 80 homeless men, women and children. We are lovingly referred to as “The Chicken Church” by our guests, because our meal typically includes Jack Dillon's barrel chicken, rice, salad, rolls and a homemade dessert.
It takes a number of volunteers each month to pull this together – we need folks to prepare, cook and carve the chicken; make the salad, rice and dessert; set up the space, set the tables, serve, wash dishes, etc.
If you are interested in being a part of this wonderful ministry, please sign-up at the Welcome Center or talk to Rick or Janice Stenzel (916-218-2423). We would love to have you be part of our team! The next Gathering Inn Hosting event will be Wednesday, December 11

The Gathering Inn is asking for women's underwear sizes 6, 7 & 8 (especially bras for women) and men's underwear in all sizes. There is also a need for men's and women's razors.
In addition, TGI continues to need High Energy detergent as well as bleach, bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, fitted twin sheets and gently used pillows. TGI is also accepting women's jeans sizes 2-8 or juniors size 11.
Please watch the Sunday bulletin for an important announcement of our annual Christmas donation program. We will be partnering with The Gathering Inn for a special holiday outreach effort.
Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entry to Canterbury Hall. Every item is greatly appreciated. Beth Sulc will deliver the items to The Gathering Inn. If you are interested in helping deliver donations, please contact Beth at:

St. James Food Pantry Ministry
Thank you for your continued support of the Food Pantry in Lincoln run by St. James Episcopal Church. Sadly, the need has not diminished, and there has been a rise in younger families coming in due to shortages in their monthly budget for food.
Some of the most requested types of food are: tuna, chicken, either canned or pouches, rice, raw pinto beans, peanut butter, cereal and fruit type cups. The majority of the beneficiaries of this food are not homeless but do not have adequate income to afford nutritious food for a full month.
The grocery cart is located at the entrance to Canterbury Hall.
Your generosity is a blessing to many of our neighbors in Lincoln. Thank you,
Jim Quinney
Please make sure your items are not past the expiration date and are unopened.

St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room
|
|
The St. Vincent de Paul group got together on November 21
st
to prepare a special meal for the patrons. Jack Dillon and John Redmond prepared their famous “Barrel Chicken." The chicken was prepared at the church and transported to St. Vincent de Paul right before dining commenced. Beth Sulc was the guest salad presenter and made her salad similar to what is served to The Gathering Inn the second Wednesday of the month. Rice pilaf and green beans were prepared by Deidre and Rob Shonk. Rick and Janice Stenzel and Rich and Rhonda Wampler helped support the luncheon with donations. It was a very successful pre-Thanksgiving meal. Thank you to everyone who volunteered.
The group of volunteers from St. Augustine Church regularly serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. They volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
Volunteers include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Rob and Deidre Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Lyn Fuson, Steve Broce, Linda Peterson and Kathryn Jordan.
Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry:

Coming up is another opportunity for a fun, hands-on global outreach event...packing food for Rise Against Hunger. What often gets lost in all the fun, this is also a fundraising event. The more money that is donated will help purchase and pack more food.
The St. Augustine Outreach Ministry Team is funding a large number of the meals with a $3,000 grant. But your help is needed to make this a wonderful community endeavor. Every little bit helps, so please be generous.
One box of 36 bags is 216 meals – cost is $75.00 per box
One box of nutritious meals will feed a child for a full school year!
How many children do you want to support?
Registration will be on-line this year. If you need assistance, there will people available to help on Sundays in January to sign up and make donations. There is a link to register on our St. Augustine website. Don't wait! Do it now! Your gift will be tax deductible for this year!
Thank you from the St. Augustine Outreach Ministry Team!

FISH is undergoing some change. We'll be partnering with St. James Episcopal Church and Lincoln United Methodist Church to form a cooperative youth group. This new partnership will rotate between our parishes, bring more of us together and offer more opportunities for building relations and forming our faith. For now, we are calling it the Co-Op. Our first event together will be a joint Christmas party hosted by Lincoln UMC (629 I Street) on Wednesday, December 18

The Sunday School continues to be a busy place! The teachers and children are having fun and learning about many new concepts.
We made gratitude jars focusing on GIVE THANKS, Gratitude Is Very Easy, Thank Others, Help Others, Appreciate What You Have, Notice Your Blessings, Know Your Gifts and Serve Others. Hopefully some families were more successful then ours in recording their gratitude.
We had fun one week giving our fears to God. We played fear toss (bean bag throw) chanting Have No Fear Jesus is Here.
Looking forward we are helping the children focus on the reason for the season. We made Get Ready bags that are filled with simple acts of service or kindness for the kids to do. We will be focusing on the Advent wreath and the meaning of each week.
Thank you for your continued support of our program!

How many Episcopalians does it take to assemble a storage shed???
As it turns out, it takes five. Four to assemble, and one to organize the assemblies!
Thanks to Scott Kennedy, Bob Deering, Jack Dillon, Clint Bohlen, and Rachel Dooley for donating an afternoon to get the job done! Let you figure out who the organizer was!!!! If you’ll take a look inside the dumpster surround, you will see their amazing finished product. No serious injuries were reported!
Thanks so much for the hard work, good fellowship and a few laughs along the way. It stands proudly ready to serve the needs of The Gathering Inn and children’s play equipment.

Episcopal Diocese of Northern California
Convention 2019
|
|
The 2019 Diocesan Convention was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov 7-9, at the McClellan Conference Center in Sacramento. Delegations from most of our churches gathered for three days of worship, fellowship and business in this important annual event in the governance of our diocese.
Six St. Augustine members were delegates: Kathleen and John Quigley; Chris and Bob Deering and Beth Sulc. Peggy Doyle was an original delegate, but was not able to attend due to a family emergency. Rick Stenzel stepped in as a delegate and Janice Stenzel, an alternate. Fr. Tom and Pastor Maryellen also represented St. Augustine. Steve and Sharon Mershon and Barbara Sawyer attended the convention for the Friday sessions.
The keynote speaker on Friday was Mary Parmer, creator of the Invite-Welcome-Connect ministry. She shared with the group ways to help increase evangelism in our communities. Ms. Parmer also talked about ways to invite, welcome and connect with potential new members.
Jim Quinney of St. Augustine, representing Rise Against Hunger, challenged the group to look at ending food insecurity and world hunger by 2030. His challenge was backed up by an invitation to pack meals for children struggling with hunger across the globe. Bishop Megan led the 170 lay and clergy delegates into the packing space, where they packed 70 boxes (15,120 meals) of food, which will support 70 children in a school feeding program.
Many parishes supported this activity with grants of $75 or more. Through an outreach grant, St. Augustine donated $225, representing three boxes of meals.
The event was also supported by a number of volunteers from St. Augustine who made a special trip to set up and take down the equipment plus support the meal packaging. Special thanks to John Redmond, Ron Harton, Carlton Allen, Steve Mershon, Sharon Mershon, Chris Cooper and John Ronan. Kalie Geiger assisted Jim with organizing supplies.

The Prayer Shawl ministry will take a break from formal meetings for a few months. However, members will continue to knit and crochet prayer shawls on their own.
There are shawls available if you would like to give one to a person in need. The shawls are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. These prayer shawls are given to people who need to feel the love of God and the support of our congregation as they struggle with illness or life’s challenges.
Please contact Greer Nave if you need more information.

In her recently published book
Anchors for the Soul
, Joyce Rupp gives us words to consider in the month of December. She entitles them “The Stars of Advent."
“Let the Star of Hope blaze through discouragement, doubt, and disgruntledness.
Let the Star of Kindness radiate through what you think, feel and do today.
Let the Star of Remembrance glitter in thoughts of good people and good deeds.
Let the Star of Laughter sparkle in your eyes and in your smile.
Let the Star of Joy dance in the corners of your heart that have forgotten how to sing.
Let the star of Patience permeate that which you find difficult and irritating.”
Words worth sharing in this most precious time.
December blessings dear friends!
Carole Peterson
"In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”
