Advent 2020 New Beginnings
|
|
Do you remember the anticipation of waiting to open your gifts on Christmas morning as a child? The anticipation heightens your nerves and senses like a runner at the race starting line. Advent is about anticipation. In the liturgical season of Advent, we await the coming of Christ. We put ourselves in Israel’s place, waiting for the coming Messiah.
Simultaneously, we anticipate Christ’s second coming. It is the time of year that we cry, “Come, Lord Jesus.” Advent is pregnant with anticipation. Advent is full of hope of what the future holds. During Advent, we acknowledge that the world is not perfected yet, but we anticipate and look forward to the day when Jesus returns and sets everything right.
We hope that one day there will be no more tears, no more pain, no more enemies, no more evil, but in their place, instead: whole hearts, whole bodies, whole selves, whole relationships and all God all the time.
Last week we had to close the church building down again due to the pandemic. We live in the reality that the pandemic is wreaking havoc on our lives. However, recently three medical companies have announced they have vaccines to fight the COVID-19 virus.
We can see the end coming to the social isolation. We can hope for the day when our church can open fully. We anticipate when we can go to restaurants, movie theaters and concerts again. We anticipate the end of the pandemic that has upended our lives.
The pandemic changed us. The pandemic helped us to rethink our lives. We have gained clarity of what works and what does not work in our lives. We have learned how much in-person interactions give us life.
We have learned that some work can be done over Zoom. We have learned that walks make life better. This is the time to think about what is valuable, what is missed and what is should be put away forever. My hope for you is that you embrace the anticipation of the end of the pandemic; that you use the pandemic to realign your life to make it even better than it was before.
The theme for this year’s Advent at St. Augustine is “New Beginnings.” Advent begins the church year, a new year and a new season with a new rector. This year will be a new lease on life in our church. We have come to understand ourselves and our place in our community even more. We are rethinking how we do things and we are embracing the deeply valuable things in life.
This Advent please enter the spirit of anticipation. Hope with me for the light to come. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel, so keep your heads up and hold onto the hope of what is to come.
In Christ’s hope,
Pastor Anny+

Sunday Service Live-Streamed
Dear Friends in Christ,
Placer County is now closed for indoor worship. This means that St. Augustine will live-stream our Sunday Eucharist Service. We will not have in-person worship until Placer County opens up again. We are also not having outdoor services until the weather warms up. So please join us at 10 a.m. Sunday through Twitch and worship with us.
There is a COVID-19 resurgence in Placer County, so it is important that you protect yourself and other people. Let us see this as an opportunity to protect our neighbors from the COVID-19 virus. We can see taking precautions as an act of Christ's love for our community.
Please also remember that we have Communion at Home available. You may pick up your consecrated wafers at St. Augustine on Saturdays between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. We have a drive-by for you to pick up for your wafers.
Let us be thankful for the many gifts we have and look for the places of gratitude in our lives.
In gratitude for you,
Pastor Anny+
|
|
Please join St. Augustine for communion. You may participate through our online streamed service. It is important to us that we share Eucharist with all who desire life-sustaining gifts of the holy meal. It is imperative that we share the table with those who are not able to be with us in person; we are one body in Christ.
Communion wafers are now available for Communion at Home. The wafers are carefully prepared, consecrated Body of Christ. Extensive provisions have been made to keep the wafers safe from the COVID-19 virus. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.
You may drive by and pick up communion wafers at the church on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Licensed Eucharist Minister will dispense the wafers in a container for you to use during our Sunday online live-streamed service.
Our hope is that this taste of heaven, the Body of Christ, will sustain you, heal you and give you hope through difficult times.

Fall Stewardship Campaign
Happy Holidays to All!
I am writing this message not only from a Senior Warden’s point-of-view but that of the pledge clerk as well. Needless to say, this has been a trying and almost impossible year for us all.
We do have so much to be thankful for, especially St. Augustine and our church family. It seems we will never be the same. But maybe, with God’s help and the guidance of our leaders, we will continue on as a positive influence in our community.
A stewardship update: We are still missing many pledge cards and commitments. At this point, the end of November, we are short nearly $70,000. If you have not completed and turned in your card, I ask you to do so.
Without funding, our programs will suffer. Two special programs which truly need our support are the Children and Youth Ministries. Our children need us to be present for and be positive role models in their Christian upbringing. Without proper funding, this is not possible.
I know we all are worried about what the future holds, but I truly believe with God’s guidance and your commitment, we will continue to thrive in our faith journey.
We have a wonderful new leader in Pastor Anny. She is fully committed to us all and has a tremendous ability to help us grow and thrive through these rough times.
Now is the time to reach into your hearts and enrich your life through Christ and the work He leads us to do.
Blessings and love,
Kathy Dillon, Senior Warden

Dear Sunday School Students,
Thank you to everyone who donated food for the St. James food pantry. Our Sunday School was able to restock the pantry and help those in need. We had a few great Sundays with Sunday School and enjoying our Godly Play lessons. We cannot wait to continue these lessons with the children when we can be together for Sunday School again.
As we enter the season of Advent and look forward to Christmas, we have prepared Advent Bags for our Sunday School families. If you were unable to pick up a bag, but would like one, please contact Kara, and she will be happy to drop one off at your home.
Please keep your eyes out for an email from us updating you with our plans. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Natalie or Kara.
Thank you,

The FISH Youth Group has been meeting weekly over Zoom, led by Virginia Genato. Currently, the group is going through the theology curriculum book, Blessed to Bless. The study goes through the Bible and its many lessons in order from Old Testament to New Testament.
So far, they have touched on the topics of sibling struggles, maturity and stewardship. They have also studied Genesis, Chapters 1-11, discussing the Old Testament creation stories, the consequences of sin, Noah and the Great Flood and many other Genesis stories.
When the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, Virginia hopes to plan one in-person gathering once a month for a fun outing after a Bible study session. She also looks forward to sitting down with the members for dinner and an activity.
Virginia’s passions are service and volunteer work. Over time, she plans to incorporate a service component into the FISH Group sessions. Hopefully, in the future, the group can also plan a retreat.
The group meets every Sunday night at 7 p.m. by Zoom. It will not meet December 27th because of the holiday weekend. At the present time, a group of five individuals participate in the weekly meetings. The FISH Youth Group welcomes anyone, junior high through high school, who would like to join in the Sunday night discussions.
For more information about the FISH Youth Group, please contact Virginia at:

Save the Date!!!
January 31, 2021
|
|
Please plan to be a part of our Annual Meeting, Sunday, January 31, 2021, following the 10 a.m. service. We will hear about the state of the parish, elect new Vestry members and elect 2021 Convention delegates.
The Vestry is the governing board of our congregation. Members of the Vestry serve three-year terms. These seats rotate years so there are always experienced members on the board.
This year we have five positions to fill. Three positions are three-year terms. We have a two-year term and a one-year term due to the early departure of Vestry members. More information and application forms will be available in early December.

Centering Prayer is proving to be a beautiful way to connect with God. It allows a time to deepen our awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. As we reenter a time of the church being closed to group worship, we need God’s presence more than ever. Centering Prayer can help us find the core trust that God is always with us.
We would love to have you join us for our Centering Prayer time:
Monday Evenings at 6:30 p.m.
Fridays at 12 p.m.
Centering Prayer will continue to meet via Zoom until COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
To join either the Monday or Friday Centering Prayer group, please contact Chris Deering or Steve Mershon at:
If you are more comfortable praying on your own, that is great! Please see the information below to download the app on your device. We hope you will join us on Zoom or on your own to learn how contemplation can enrich our faith experience.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayer. They are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.
While most of our work is done at home, we used to have a lovely time of fellowship when we met each month in Canterbury Hall, and hope to do so again when it is safe to do so. There is always an opening for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. We welcome our newest member, Sharon Taylor.
A couple of people have expressed an interest in learning to knit. If you are one of those, let me know. We just might do a Zoom class. Email Greer at gnave@aol.com.
We have several shawls in inventory, contact Pastor Anny or Greer Nave if you know of someone who would like one. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer. They are presented with a beautiful card of our own design, and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
|
|
In November, we again prepared our famous barrel chicken with all the fixings and a homemade dessert for The Gathering Inn guests. Because of COVID-19, we are still not able to house our guests. We prepare the meal and transport it to a designated church whose members serve and house everyone for the night.
We are grateful for our team members who so willingly give of their time to prepare and deliver the meal. As we enter into the winter months, we pray that our homeless brothers and sisters will always have a meal and a warm place to sleep each night.

The Outreach Ministry Team
|
|
In the spirit of our Church tradition, the mission of Outreach Ministry is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others.
The Outreach Ministry Team once again partnered with Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Daughters of the King and members of the congregation to provide Christmas cheer to The Gathering Inn families. The funds raised provide Walmart cards to families placed in homes within the last year.
The families can purchase foods of their own choice for a holiday meal. The gift cards also make it possible for The Gathering Inn parents to purchase gifts for their children.
This is the second year that St. Augustine has supported the Christmas gift card program. This year, over $3,000 was raised for the families in need.
Outreach Ministry Team members continue to provide support for the monthly dinners for The Gathering Inn guests on the second Wednesday of every month. During this time of COVID-19, the meals are prepared at St. Augustine and delivered to a designated church.
In addition, Outreach sends a cooking team, once each quarter, to The Gathering Inn Auburn site, to prepare a meal on site in their designated kitchen trailer. The Gathering Inn is the only homeless shelter in South Placer County that serves singles, couples and families.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to Outreach Ministry and continues to make these grants possible. If you are interested in joining our team, we meet on the first Sunday of the month. Presently the meeting is on Zoom. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, December 6th, at 3 p.m. Please contact Camille Grabowski at camillegrabowski@gmail.com or 916-409-5509.

Put a Smile on the Face of a Gathering Inn Child
Christmas Morning
|
|
The Gathering Inn Christmas gift card program, in its second year, is nearing completion. The program is supported by donations from the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Daughters of the King, the Outreach Ministry Team and members of the congregation.
As in the past, the parents of each child will receive a $50 Walmart gift certificate to shop for Christmas gifts for that child. Additionally, each family placed in housing in the past year will receive a $50 Walmart gift certificate to purchase food for a Christmas dinner.
We are anticipating the gift cards to benefit around 40 children and 23 families. The total amount donated by St. Augustine is expected to be over $3,000.
The staff of The Gathering Inn has expressed delight that we have decided to benefit so many of the families in need this year! Thank you to all who have donated to this program.

The St. James Episcopal Church Food Pantry is open, primarily serving people in the city of Lincoln. The number of families they support has risen in the past few months. They greatly appreciate our donations.
St. James Church has provided this wonderful ministry for many years. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more challenging and needed. Unlike some of the larger food cooperatives, the Pantry needs items packed in smaller containers.
The week before Thanksgiving, Candace Rousselet, John Redmond and Jim Quinney joined two others at the St. James Pantry in Lincoln to help support the important work of the Pantry.
After being re-stocked, in large part by the Sunday School project the Sunday before, we were able to fully supply 18 local families. These families are not homeless. The pantry helps each family with extra food so they can use their limited funds to stay current on rent, mortgage and utilities when they run a little short at the end of a week or month. Many of these families have multi-generations living under one roof and the extra food is so appreciated.
The following items are always in need:
Plain rice, raw pinto and black beans, tortilla shells (flour and corn), cereal, fruit (canned or cups - low sugar) pancake mix and syrup, hot sauce (Tomatillo), tuna fish and mac n cheese.
Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to the St. James Pantry.
If you would like to become a weekly patron, contact Jim Quinney, and he will put you on the list and send emails of needed items.
Thank you for your continued support of this important ministry.
Jim Quinney

St. Vincent de Paul
Dining Room
|
|
|
St. Vincent de Paul is a group of volunteers from the church who work at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room in Roseville on the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
On November 19th, the volunteers prepared chicken salad sandwiches, including chips, dessert and trail mix. Volunteers John Redmond and Steve Broce assembled the lunches. The Supervisor of St. Vincent de Paul, John Mayne, passed out the lunches at 11:30.
Our volunteers for December 17th are Jack Dillon, Rick and Janice Stenzel and Kathryn Jordan. They will be preparing the famous “Barrel Chicken” for the guests.
Volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce and Kathryn Jordan.
Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry: robshonk1976@hotmail.com or 916-599-1218.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the fourth Saturday morning of the month. During this time of COVID-19 restrictions, the Brotherhood is holding its meetings via Zoom.
All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Even if you are not a member of the Brotherhood, and just have an interest in what we do, you are welcome to join us on Zoom. Rob Shonk is the Director.
At their November 28th meeting, the Brothers celebrated St. Andrew’s Day (November 30th). Fr. Peter Rodgers, from St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Antelope, gave the message, dealing and coping with the current pandemic. He used scripture about St. Andrew to frame his talk.
At a previous meeting, the Brothers approved a $1,000 donation to The Gathering Inn gift card program. They partnered with Daughters of the King, members of the congregation and The Outreach Team to provide funds for families to purchase gifts and food for Christmas.
The group approved officers for 2021. Rob Shonk will remain as director, John Quigley, treasurer and John Redmond, secretary. The Brothers also approved purchasing food for the St. Vincent de Paul free meal kitchen on December 17th. Jack Dillon and John Redmond will prepare the famous “barrel chicken” along with macaroni salad, which will be served in to-go cartons, along with snacks in a brown paper bag.
The Brotherhood will not meet in December. Their next meeting will be January 23rd at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
