From the Pastor
One of my favorite quotes comes from an anonymous source on the internet. It goes like this: “Calm is a superpower.” It’s a great reminder to stay calm under pressure, and it affirms just how hard that can be sometimes.
There’s this story of Jesus and his disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee on their boat. The topography of this area makes it susceptible to sudden changes in weather conditions, and what at first appeared to be good conditions for their maritime voyage turned to danger and fear. Meanwhile, we’re told, Jesus is sound asleep. His friends are panicking and he is calm as a cucumber. So they wake him and he calms the sea.

Okay, that’s probably not what that quote was about because for most of us, the ability to remain calm under pressure isn’t a literal superpower. But who hasn’t felt overwhelmed, panicked, or desperate at least once in their life? The first thing we all look for is a source of stability--someone who can stay calm and help us find our footing again.

As people of faith we’re reminded that turbulence and change are normal. The stakes could be low, or the stakes could be pretty high, but we’re traveling with the one who can calm the storms. And he has given us sacraments to remind us of his presence through all seasons and conditions of life. If you’re homebound, we’ll send a Lay Eucharistic Visitor to bring communion to you--the food of his presence, and nourishment for your spiritual labor. If you’re facing an illness, an operation, or a course of treatment, you can ask a priest (my info is on the back of the bulletin) to come and perform unction - anointing you with oil as a sign of Christ’s healing power.

That story ends with the disciples remarking in wonder, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?” May we find such wonder ourselves as Christ accompanies us through all our travails and tempests.

Grace and peace,
Fr. Tom+
Service Times

8 a.m. Sunday Service
This is a simple communion service without music using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship.

10 a.m. Sunday Service
The 10 a.m. service is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions.
Centering Prayer

One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In response to the enthusiasm growing around this feeling, our Centering Prayer gatherings are offered Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at noon. We hope that you will join us and see how contemplation can enrich your own experience.

Adult Formation Classes

Episcopal 101

Join us every third Sunday for a quick discussion of all things Episcopal. We meet in the Sunday School room after the 10 a.m. service. Do you have questions about the liturgy, our tradition or why we do things a certain way? Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 19 th . The classes are led by Fr. Tom.
Soup Supper & Lenten Series
Join us for a four-part Lenten series beginning Tuesday, March 10 th exploring the book Being Mortal. Author and physician Atul Gawande calls for a change in the way that medical professionals treat patients approaching the end of life. He recommends that instead of focusing on survival, practitioners should focus on enabling well-being.

If you would like to discuss these issues and how they might translate into your own life, please join us. Each week participants will read a few chapters of the book and then meet to explore questions posed by facilitator, the Rev. Maryellen Garnier RN. The group will meet four Tuesdays: March 10 th , 17 th , 24 th and 31 st at 6:30 p.m. for soup supper. Discussion begins at 7 p.m. Sign up at the Welcome Center.
St. Augustine in Transition
Profile Committee Update
February 2020
Goals
  • To develop a Parish Profile that tells the story of St. Augustine
  • To encourage as much parish participation as possible in this process
  • To celebrate our gifts and identify the needs and challenges of our parish
  • To ground our work in the Holy Spirit

We are pleased to announce that the St. Augustine of Canterbury Parish Profile has been approved by the vestry and the Bishop's Office. It is posted on the diocesan website: norcalepiscopal.org/open-clergy-positions

Many thanks to the Parish Profile Committee, which spent many hours this fall preparing the Profile. Peggy Doyle was chair and Carole Peterson, chaplain. Other members were Theresa Allen, Fred Buhler, Camille Grabowski, Kathleen Quigley and Jeanne Rochelle. Special thanks to Peggy for her leadership and to Peggy and Theresa for their design work.

Transition Prayer

Prayer is at the center of our Transition Process. The Transition Prayer below grounds us in the Holy Spirit and guides our work as we prepare a document which reflects the spirit, the strengths, the challenges and the hopes and dreams of St. Augustine Church.

Lord of all, we give thanks for what you have done as we listen to hear what you are calling us to be and do. We pray for our priests, Tom and Maryellen, our Vestry, and the person who will answer our call. We humbly ask for the wisdom and patience this process involves. Keep the eyes of our souls open and the ears of our hearts tuned to you. We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Phishy Emails???????

We're aware of some issues with fake emails being sent out trying to get people to buy "gift cards" for some kind of scam. Some of these emails even attempt to impersonate people from the church like Fr. Tom. Sometimes this can be amusing, as with comic James Veitch , but most of the time it's just plain annoying.

Scams like this are called " phishing " and have become rampant in today's interconnected world. Even with strong security safeguards, it's possible for ne'er-do-wells to skim just enough information from websites and public data that they think they can trick you into giving them money. Don't let them fool you!

If something seems odd, always check the from address. If it doesn't match one of the authentic email addresses you see on the back of the bulletin each week, it isn't from us. (See below)You should also take a moment to learn how to report spam with your email service. This is the most effective way to take down these accounts and get back to enjoying your day.

Hosting Coffee Hour is Easy!

All of us enjoy Coffee Hour after church. However, we need more volunteers to sign up to provide snacks. It is easy! Find a partner to share the experience. Keep it simple.

Although occasionally those who host provide a generous offering, that is NOT the expectation. Snacks can be simple finger foods such as: cookies, crackers, cheese, chips, veggies, fruit . . . you get it. You will need about 100 pieces.

TIP: Check out the big box stores for large packages.

Come early to set up, stay late to clean up. You do not have to worry about coffee and tea as those are provided by the Hospitality Coffee person. Look for the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Thank you for volunteering. If you have questions, please contact Camille Grabowski at:

Altar Flowers

We are ordering fresh flowers for the altar from the Rocklin Flower Shop on the corner of Stanford Ranch and Park Drive. If you wish to donate for altar flowers, please sign your name and the occasion (thanksgivings, memorial, anniversary, birthdays, etc.) on the sign-up sheet in the display rack near the office.

Please make checks payable to St. Augustine for $40 with ‘Altar Flowers’ in the memo line. Names of those giving flowers for special occasions will be acknowledged in the bulletin on the appropriate date.

Thank you.

Annual Parish Business Meeting Report

Sunday, January 26 th
Our 2019 Annual meeting was a great time of food, fellowship and the business of the Church. We heard from Treasurer Bob Deering; Junior Warden, Chris Deering; and Senior Warden, Kathy Dillon.

Fr. Tom thanked the congregation for its support during this transition time...from his ordination to his experience as Lead Pastor. He reflected on the many changes that have occurred during the year. Fr. Tom also thanked Pastor Maryellen for her support, advice and counsel. He expressed gratitude for all we have shared and for what is yet to come...and wonder at what God has in store for all of us as we proceed with our search for a new rector and he discerns his new call.

The Profile Committee was pleased to announce that the Parish Profile has been approved by the Bishop's Office and is now posted on the diocesan website. You may view it by going to:

norcalepiscopal.org/open-clergy-positions

Fred Buhler, Rick Lovin and Mike Lloyd were elected to serve three-year terms on the Vestry. Eight Diocesan Convention delegates were elected by acclimation. They are Chris Deering, Kathy Dillon, Jack Dillon, Sharon Mershon, Steve Mershon, Carol Ann Hackley, Candace Rousselet and Beth Sulc. They will meet as a group to decide who will serve as the alternate.

Continuing Vestry members are: Kathy Dillon, Chris Deering, Peggy Doyle, Jim Quinney, Barbara Sawyer and Lana Gartin. Many thanks to to Carlton Allen who will be leaving the Vestry after serving a three-year term.

Bob Deering continues as treasurer and Kathleen Quigley as Vestry clerk.

Full reports are available in the 2019 Annual Meeting Booklet found on the website under the Info Center ( www.staugustineepiscopal.com ). The Booklet in cludes the Lead Pastor's report, Senior Warden's report, Junior Warden's Report, Treasurer's report and Ministry Team reports.
St. Augustine hosted another successful RISE event January 24 th and 25 th. Over 150 folks worked the Friday night and Saturday afternoon packing 25,000 meals. About 45% of the people who worked were from outside St. Augustine. The children did a super job running the meal packets from one place to another.

Jim Quinney presented Kathy Dillon, Senior Warden, with a special gift, a miniature gong set, thanking St. Augustine for packing 165,312 meals since 2014. Those meals served 766 children for a year.

Many thanks to all of the parishioners and community members who worked the RISE event. It was a fun time!

Saturday, February 29 th

Only a few spots left for this special one-day event! Join us at the Mercy Center in Auburn for the 2020 St. Augustine Women’s Retreat, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m.
"Love God with all your heart, soul, strength and mind and love your neighbor as yourself." This is our inspiration for a balanced life. Not a perfect balance, not the balance you see on TV or the movies, nor the balance someone else has. This is about finding your balance and your rhythm that is grounded in how God is calling you to live a more loving, peaceful, grace-filled life. Enjoy a day filled with prayer, music, quiet time, sharing and reflecting on how to find the rhythm of your life.

Outreach Ministry

In the spirit of our Church tradition, the mission of Outreach Ministry is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving.

Outreach Ministry continues to need volunteers to help prepare, serve, and clean up at the monthly dinner we provide to The Gathering Inn guests. They join us on the second Wednesday of every month. No experience is necessary! The Gathering Inn is the only homeless shelter in South Placer County and the only shelter that takes families. Join us as we extend to them a St. Augustine welcome. www.thegatheringinn.com

Sometimes it is hard to imagine, but food insecurity is still an issue right here in our community. The St. James food pantry assists local residents by offering basic food items like beans, rice, tortillas and canned goods. Please drop off your donations in the grocery cart, and they will be delivered to the pantry.

The Center at St. Matthew’s is a thriving Mission Church in the Arden Arcade area of Sacramento which has a bilingual Episcopal mission congregation at its heart. Utilizing non-profit partners, it primarily serves this refugee and asylum seeker community’s needs, including a food bank operated by River City Food Bank, ESL classes taught onsite in portables through Highland Community Charter School and pre-school provided by Let the Children Come. If you are interested in knowing more about the Center, check them out http://www.stmatthewschurchsacramento.org/

Interested in serving others in a proactive way? Consider joining our team. We meet the first Sunday of the month after the 10 a.m. service. All are welcome to attend. Our next meeting is March 5 th , at 11:30 a.m.

For more information, please contact Camille Grabowksi at:

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program

On Wednesday, January 8 th , we prepared our famous Barrel Chicken as part of a hearty meal for 67 guests from The Gathering Inn. The homemade dessert for this month was a tasty lemon cake.

Once again, the meal here at St. Augustine was a great hit. In January, our volunteer group was a bit light, but everyone pulled together to make the evening a great success. Thanks to all who participated.

The Gathering Inn Ministry is a great opportunity for members of St. Augustine to blend with our challenged neighbors and provide a hearty hot meal and a place to sleep that is dry and warm.

We need volunteers each month to make this happen. Volunteer shifts start at 1:30 and go to approximately 7:30. Times vary depending on the activity for which you sign-up. We encourage anyone who may be interested in helping sustain this worthwhile cause to contact Janice or Rick Stenzel at:

You may also sign up at Church on The Gathering Inn sheet found at the Welcome Center.
The Gathering Inn Donations
The Gathering Inn has a need for four clean or new twin beds and box springs. They also could use water-proof ponchos for the guests. TGI continues to request men's and women's underwear and socks.

Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entry to Canterbury Hall. Every item is greatly appreciated. Beth Sulc will deliver the items to The Gathering Inn. If you have questions, please contact Beth at:

Thank you for your generosity!
St. James Food Pantry Ministry

Thank you for your continued support of the Food Pantry in Lincoln run by St. James Episcopal Church. Sadly, the need has not diminished, and there has been a rise in younger families coming in due to shortages in their monthly budget for food.

Some of the most requested types of food are: tuna, chicken, either canned or pouches, rice, raw pinto beans, peanut butter, cereal and fruit type cups. The majority of the beneficiaries of this food are not homeless but do not have adequate income to afford nutritious food for a full month.

The grocery cart is located at the entrance to Canterbury Hall.

Your generosity is a blessing to many of our neighbors in Lincoln. Thank you,
Jim Quinney

Please make sure your items are not past the expiration date and are unopened.
St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room
A group of volunteers from St. Augustine Church regularly serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. They work from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.

Volunteers include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce, Lyn Fuson, Linda Peterson and Kathy Jordan.

On Thursday, February 20th, Jack Dillon, John Redmond and Steve Broce will be volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul.

Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry:

Welcome to all the new faces in Sunday School. We sure love having you all.

This month we talked about the journey the three wise men went on to meet baby Jesus. They did not have maps or GPS like we have today but trusted in the angels of the Lord and followed the bright star.

We went on a mission around the classroom to find all the hidden pieces of the Bible verse Matthew 1:2, then worked together to piece them in order.

The students also learned about Jesus's baptism and what baptism in our Church looks like and means. The children learned about how God was very proud of Jesus when he was baptized and how Jesus is always proud of the good we choose to do each day.

We related this to our parents being proud of us. We hope the children always know how proud we, as Sunday School teachers, are of them.

Clara Marie Marshall was baptized into the Church Sunday, January 12 th , also the First Sunday after Epiphany, celebrating the Baptism of our Lord.

Clara's parents are Trevor and Lisa Marshall, and her proud brother is Brandon, five years old. She celebrated her first birthday in November.

Her godparents were George Barton, Trevor's good friend, and Tiffany Burton, Lisa's best friend. Grandparents, friends and family were also at church for the special occasion.

The Marshall family began attending St. Augustine two years ago.

News from the Nursery

Jordan Craft and Siena Giampaoli are the Nursery Attendants.

Our Nursery is a very active place, which is awesome. Please know you are welcome to bring your child back into the nursery after communion if you choose. Please let our Nursery Assistants know if you plan to do this, so they are prepared. Our attendants do take turns for communion, but there is always someone in the Nursery.

Please contact Kathy Dillon or Fr. Tom if you have questions:

Children's Choir

The Children's Choir rehearsals follow the 10 a.m. service, concluding by noon. Rehearsals take place on the first and third Sundays.

The choir sings periodically during the 10 a.m. service throughout the school year. All children from kindergarten through 5 th grade are welcome.

We are looking for more children to share their enthusiastic voices in the awesome Children's Choir. Give it a try!

Prayer Shawl
Ministry
The Prayer Shawl ministry will take a break from formal meetings for a few months. However, members will continue to knit and crochet prayer shawls on their own.

There are shawls available if you would like to give one to a person in need. The shawls are presented with a beautiful card and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer. These prayer shawls are given to people who need to feel the love of God and the support of our congregation as they struggle with illness or life’s challenges.

Please contact Greer Nave if you need more information.
