Matthew 14:16 But Jesus said to them, “There is no need to send them away. You give them something to eat.”
There is a COVID-19 joke going around, that I have heard it several times: “I’ve gained my COVID-19 pounds.” The isolation, the boredom, the fear, the endless Netflix has made eating a new pastime.
Well, Lent begins in a few weeks. Lent during a pandemic will be different than other years. Lent is a preparation for Easter. Traditionally, we observe lent by fasting and denying ourselves.
However, this year has been a year of self-denial. Some people have lost their jobs. Many people do not have food on their tables. Many people are hungry for people contact. Every single person has experienced self-denial in some form or another in the last year. We may not all know physical hunger, but we all know hunger - spiritually, emotionally or relationally. So, this year the theme for Lent is hunger.
This year I would like to call us to look at hunger. Then think deeply about hunger. What is hunger: physical hunger, spiritual hunger, emotional and relational hunger? How do we satisfy hunger in ourselves, our families and our community? Will you think with me about hunger? This conversation will lead us to think about what really satisfies and nourishes us. What are the things in our lives that make us feel full?
O God, who fed the multitudes with but a few loaves and some fish, feed us now with the abundance of what you freely offer, that we might overflow with your goodness right where we live. All this we pray in the name of, and because of, Jesus our Christ. Amen.
May you find fullness in many ways!

Presents
Finding God in Chaos
Dr. Lindy Williams
February 23rd- March 23rd
The Biblical prophet Ezekiel’s life was upended by cultural change. He and 10,000 people were exiled due to war and made to leave their homes, their towns, and their temple. These lost people had to reconstruct their lives in a place away from their sacred home.
Join us for a five-week journey examining how they learned to survive in their new topsy turvy world. Where was God during change and hardship? How did God recast their dismal outlook to protect the faith’s future? How did one faithful leader, Ezekiel, use storytelling to enable them to thrive amid massive upheaval?
This five-week study, Tuesdays, February 23rd through March 23rd, will spend one week exploring how the book of Ezekiel highlights incomprehensible loss, before spending the next three weeks on the book’s reimagining of Jerusalem, the Davidic monarchy, and the Promised Land. It will close with a discussion on lessons learned, and how we can apply these lessons to our own uncertain times.

Introducing...
...Dr. Lindy Williams
|
Hi Everyone! I’m Lindy and you’ll soon find that I love the book of Ezekiel. I didn’t know this is where my life was going to go back when I started school, but God has an amazing way of getting us where He wants us to go.
|
|
I graduated from West Point and spent some time in the Army before circling back to Fuller Seminary to get my Master of Arts in theology. My first class was an Old Testament class and that was that.
I was able to pursue my Ph.D. at the University of Manchester in the UK, while continuing to work for Fuller where I’ve been working with students for the last 16 years. When I’m not reading about Ezekiel and the Old Testament, I spend as much time as I can either hiking or on my road bike. Colorado Springs is a great place to live when you are a mountain girl at heart.
I’m really looking forward to studying a fascinating book of the Bible with you in 2021.

The FISH Youth Group is currently finishing up the last chapters of Genesis, prompting exciting discussions around identity, responsibility and listening closely to God’s calling for us all. This last month, we have gone over the stories of Abraham and Sarah and their faith in the Lord.
From there we went over the stories of Isaac and Ishmael and onto Jacob and Esau. In the month of February, we will finish up Genesis with the tellings of Jacob's testing as well as Joseph and promises fulfilled, and then we will be moving on to Exodus.
The group is going through the theology curriculum book, Blessed to Bless. The study goes through the Bible and its many lessons in order from Old Testament to New Testament.
The meetings are held every Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. on Zoom. The FISH Youth Group welcomes anyone, junior high through high school, who would like to join in the Sunday night discussions.

Annual Parish Meeting
Sunday, January 31st

The 2021 Annual Parish Meeting was live-streamed January 31st following the regular 10 a.m. church service. It was a time for the congregation to hear about the business of the church. Reports were given by Treasurer Bob Deering; Senior Warden, Kathy Dillon; Junior Warden, Chris Deering and Pastor Anny.
Vestry and Convention Delegate Election: Voting for the slate of new Vestry Members and Convention Delegates was conducted online by SurveyMonkey. The slate of Vestry and Delegates was approved by a positive vote.
· New Vestry members are Steve Mershon, Kathleen Quigley, Jack Dillon, Reese Allen and Paulette Schloetter.
· Continuing Vestry members are Chris Deering, Barbara Sawyer, Mike Lloyd and Rick Lovin. Bob Deering will continue as church treasurer.
· Vestry members retiring are Kathy Dillon, Senior Warden, Jim Quinney and Peggy Doyle.
· Diocesan Convention delegates elected are Sharon Mershon, Steve Mershon, Chris Deering, Linda Carr, Susan Myers and Ginger Freer (alternate).

· Bob thanked parishioners for their continued financial support during this period of the pandemic.
· The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan of $26,500 helped us to meet our budget shortfall. This is a Small Business Administration loan that does not need to be repaid, if specific criteria are met.

· The church will be researching the idea of applying for grants to fund church programs.
· Bob is applying for a second PPP loan, $26,500, available for the year 2021.
· Detailed budget information is available in the Annual Meeting Booklet found on the church website under the Info Tab.

Senior Warden Report: Kathy Dillon remarked how well St. Augustine stuck together, supported one another and began our search for a new rector, all during the COVID pandemic. Blessings for Fr. Tom as he said good bye and moved to his new position as Priest-in-Charge at Faith Cameron Park.
We welcomed Pastor Anny in July. Pastor Anny immediately went to work to provide opportunities to reach out and meet our parishioners. Kathy thanked Chris Deering, Sharon Mershon, the Tech Team and Pastor Anny for their diligent work to provide a live-streamed service each week. Chris is grateful to all of the folks who have helped develop and implement the COVID-19 safety protocols.
Kathy is also grateful for all of the support from the congregation during her two years as Senior Warden. She is so anxious to once again gather to worship in our sanctuary and to see everyone in person.
Junior Warden Report: Chris Deering recalled how this year has been a year filled with change and new beginnings. We have dealt with the COVID-19 restrictions, said farewell to Fr. Tom and welcomed our new rector, Pastor Anny.
As Junior Warden, Chris is responsible for the maintenance of the building and grounds. Chris thanked the Tech Team Ministry, led by Rick Lovin, for their hard work providing professional live-stream services. A new tech corner was built to provide space for the equipment needed for live-streaming.
She also acknowledged the work of the Helping Hands Ministry, under the direction of Ron Harton. His team recently spread 30 cubic yards of gorilla hair bark around the property. Chris is pleased with the landscaping crew who keep our grounds looking attractive.
Repairs were required when a leak was discovered in the HVAC system. She hopes that the new Junior Warden will be able to accomplish the interior painting and restriping of the parking lot in the next year.
Chris closed by thanking everyone for support during this challenging year. She is grateful to have the opportunity serve St. Augustine.
Rector's Report: Pastor Anny thanked the congregation for the warm welcome she received. Pastor Anny remarked how grateful she is to the Vestry and congregation members for their support as she began her ministry at St. Augustine. She has missed the opportunity to connect with each member of our congregation, but looks forward to the time when we can gather together for worship.
She congratulated the church members on their ability to continue moving forward during the Transition to a new rector amid the COVID-19 restrictions. Pastor Anny reviewed the year and acknowledged that St. Augustine continued with events and activities in modified versions.
Pastor Anny acknowledged the fine ministries of Fr. Tom, who accepted the call as Priest-in-Charge at Faith Cameron Park; Pastor Maryellen retired so she and Gary could spend more time with their grandchildren and family in Minnesota, and Portia Hopkins, who was ordained as a deacon and then a priest.
Pastor Anny remarked that we have lost many of our beloved members this year. She is grateful for the remembrances for some, but knows how important it is to have official memorials as a way to acknowledge our friends who have gone to be with God. She hopes we will be able to hold memorial services soon.
She looks forward to connecting with each one of us during 2021. She hopes that the variety of small groups will provide opportunities for members to connect.
Pastor Anny's goals for this next year are:
- to meet in person: she is looking forward to people being in church
- to connect with people
- to recover from the pandemic
- to grow in membership
- to create a mission/vision for the church, considering growth and land use
Pastor Anny closed by thanking the Vestry and the people of St. Augustine for their love and support during this challenging time. She gave special thanks to Kathy Dillon, Senior Warden and Chris Deering, Junior Warden, for their hard work this year. She presented each with a silver cross.
Summary of the meeting submitted by:
Kathleen Quigley, Vestry Clerk
Full reports are available in the 2020 Annual Meeting Booklet found on the website under the Info Center ( www.staugustineepiscopal.com). The Booklet includes the reports of the Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Treasurer and Ministry Team Leaders.

Our Rise Against Hunger meal-packing event is scheduled for Saturday, March 6th. Times and shifts will be scheduled as we get updated guidance regarding COVID-19 restrictions.
This will be a Lenten event. We will supplement the meal-packing event with a wonderful study program called Fast Pray Give, a small group study program designed by the Wesleyan Men's Ministry part of the United Methodist Church.
The study group will be part of the Sunday morning Walk Talk session. It begins Sunday, February 21st, 9 - 9:45 a.m. and continues during Lent, led by Jim Quinney.
Please consider the more than 821 million people who suffer from chronic life-threatening undernutrition. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused far more deaths due to food insecurity than the disease itself. We can do our part to help by supporting this March 6th meal-packing event.

As we are still unable to meet at the Church due to COVID-19 restrictions, Centering Prayer via Zoom is a blessing. It gives us a meaningful way to stay connected with each other and with God. We need God’s presence more than ever during this time. Our regular prayer time deepens our awareness that God wants to spend time with us, no matter how we do that. So, until further notice, we will meet weekly via Zoom.
We would love to have you join us for our Centering Prayer time:
Monday Evenings at 6:30 p.m.
Fridays at 12 p.m.
To join either the Monday or Friday Centering Prayer group, please contact Chris Deering or Steve Mershon at:

Prayer Shawl Ministry ~ Craft Club
Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayer. They are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.
As we are not meeting in person during the pandemic, members are invited to join the Craft Club meeting at 11 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month. Next meeting is February 13th. We are not working on any particular craft, just gathering to visit while we each work on our own project. We had a great time at the first meeting.
A couple of people have expressed an interest in learning to knit. If you are one of those, let Greer know. We just might do a Zoom class. Email Greer Nave at [email protected].
We have several shawls in inventory, contact Pastor Anny or Greer if you know of someone who would like one. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer. The prayer shawls are presented with a beautiful card of our own design and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
|
|
During the month of January, St. Augustine again provided meals that were delivered directly to the Roseville site so the guests could receive a healthy, hot meal.
Please pray for our homeless brothers and sisters that they will endure this pandemic and that 2021 will be a better year for all.
We are grateful for our team members who so willingly give of their time to prepare and deliver the meal. As we enter into the winter months, we pray that our homeless brothers and sisters will always have a meal and a warm place to sleep each night.

The Gathering Inn Donations
|
|
The Gathering Inn staff reached out to St. Augustine for help with purchasing one year's worth of sanitation solution. The St. Augustine Outreach Ministry was happy to meet their needs.
A $500 grant was approved. The money was sent to the The Gathering Inn for the sanitation solution. It is used in a fogger multiple times a day on campus and at the churches where TGI guests sleep at night.

The Outreach Ministry Team
|
|
Our mission is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others.
The Outreach Ministry Team approved the grant mentioned in the article above, $500 to purchase sanitation solution for the year for The Gathering Inn.
Outreach Ministry Team members continue to provide support for the monthly dinners for The Gathering Inn guests on the second Wednesday of every month. During this time of COVID-19, the meals are prepared at St. Augustine and delivered to a designated site.
In addition, Outreach sends a cooking team, once each quarter, to The Gathering Inn Auburn site, to prepare a meal on site in their designated kitchen trailer. The Gathering Inn is the only homeless shelter in South Placer County that serves singles, couples and families.
If you are interested in joining our team, we meet on the fourth Sunday of the month, presently on Zoom. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, February 28th, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. For more information, please contact Peggy Doyle at:

The St. James Episcopal Church Food Pantry is open, primarily serving people in the city of Lincoln. The number of families they support has risen in the past few months. They greatly appreciate our donations.
St. James Church has provided this wonderful ministry for many years. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more challenging and needed. Unlike some of the larger food cooperatives, the Pantry needs items packed in smaller containers.
These families are not homeless. The pantry helps each family with extra food so they can use their limited funds to stay current on rent, mortgage and utilities when they run a little short at the end of a week or month. Many of these families have multi-generations living under one roof and the extra food is so appreciated.
The following items are always needed:
Plain rice, raw pinto and black beans, tortilla shells (flour and corn), cereal, fruit (canned or cups - low sugar) pancake mix and syrup, hot sauce (Tomatillo), tuna fish and macaroni & cheese.
Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to the St. James Pantry.
If you would like to become a weekly patron, contact Jim Quinney, and he will put you on the list and send emails of needed items.
Thank you for your continued support of this important ministry.

St. Luc Episcopal School Thomassique, Haiti
A story about our
St. Luc Partnership
The beginning: Our story began several years ago when we were introduced to St. Luc School in Thomassique, Haiti. There have been many wonderful opportunities and engaging experiences along the way. This last year, 2020, has lived up to the word “Partnership” in the title above. I have never felt more in partnership with our brothers and sisters in Haiti than right now.
A dynamo priest: It all began with a dynamo priest in charge, The Reverend Guiliene Fiefie. On her own, she managed to move the school into the new property which was at best a three-wall shed. Then we noticed in some pictures there was a newly poured concrete floor and a little tin added to the walls for better protection.
Growth: The school was growing, up to more than 70 children, and she had recruited several new qualified teachers. Then the COVID pandemic started to close things down both here and in Haiti. During this pandemic Pastor Fiefie has managed to keep the teachers in place and quickly reopened the school when permitted.
Raising funds: As the summer ended and fall approached quickly, we started talking about plans to help raise funds as giving to the school had fallen off considerably. Pastor Fiefie said she really needed to build a school and we started looking at other fundraising ideas and partners to help.
Reaching out: Pastor Fiefie attended Virginia Theology School for an academic year. She started reaching out to classmates asking for help. She would refer them to our committee, and we would direct them to our GoFundMe drive or HEAD Corp website to make a contribution.
New partnerships: One priest and his parish really seemed to be a potential good fit to partner with, so we began to discuss what that might look like. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama and The Rev. John Burruss are now official partners with us for financial support of the operating budget and are also committed to help build a new school at St. Luc.
Future plans: We will be meeting with St. Stephen’s soon to start making plans and sharing ideas. One idea that has already bubbled up is to have Pastor Fiefie come to the states and visit both parishes. This will likely be in the summer, and we will be looking at a trip in the fall to visit the school.
Blessings: I truly feel we are working side by side, shoulder to shoulder with St. Luc in Thomassique. The Holy Spirit has blessed this work by expanding the reach to include St. Stephen’s Church. There are many wonderful opportunities ahead, and we are literally like a balloon filled and ready to pop! Please join in this marvelous ministry and help support the school.
Ways You Can Help Support St. Luc School
- Consider making a $25 monthly pledge to support a child at the school.
- If you want to go deeper, consider joining The Haiti Team.
- Join us on a trip to Haiti and visit St. Luc School.
- Maybe you have a skill or hobby that could benefit our work!
Our Haiti Team members will be happy to discuss these ways you can help to support St. Luc School. Team members are Sara Postulka, Ashley Booker, Jerry Harner, Rick Lovin, Jack Dillon and Jim Quinney. Please contact Jim Quinney to discuss how to be involved with this wonderful ministry.

|
A group of volunteers from the church work at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room in Roseville on the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., helping prepare a meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
On January 21st, the volunteers prepared chicken salad sandwiches along with a green salad and snacks for the brown bag. The Supervisor of St. Vincent de Paul, John Mayne, passed out the lunches at 11:30. The volunteers have no contact with the clientele and are usually finished by 11:30 a.m. Volunteers for the February 18th luncheon are Jim and Stephanie Tilton and Jim and Carla Dolislager.
Volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce and Kathryn Jordan.
Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry: [email protected] or 916-599-1218.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the fourth Saturday morning of the month. During this time of COVID-19 restrictions, the Brotherhood is holding its meetings via Zoom.
All men and boys are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Even if you are not a member of the Brotherhood, and just have an interest in what we do, you are welcome to join us on Zoom. Rob Shonk is the Director.
At the January 23rd meeting, Jack Dillon, Steve Mershon and Rob Shonk spoke about the Kairos Prison Ministry. During this time of COVID restrictions, the ministry has been halted. They shared interesting stories about their connections with the men in blue. They are looking forward to re-establishing the two weekend retreats held during the year and ongoing prayer sessions between the major events.
Their next meeting will be Saturday, February 27th at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
