January 2021
From the Pastor...
1 Thessalonians 5:11 Encourage one another and build each other up.

My all-time favorite television show is “Friends.” “Friends” is about a group of friends who live their lives together. Every person needs friends. We each need a group where we are known, cared for, give care and support each other. We need a group that we can live our life with.

For me, that group came when I joined a small group at my church when I was 20. I was a member of a church that emphasized small groups. They created ways to belong. We met weekly in members’ homes and we talked about God. We also talked about life.

When I was 20, I was most concerned about romantic relationships, school and career. Today I am concerned about work, family life and paying bills. A small group allowed me to share those life struggles in a safe place. A small group is a place to be real, find support, and work on our faith. It is a safe place to belong.

Every person needs to belong. All people are looking for that place to belong where they can share life, and be a part of something bigger. We all want to be known and share life together. For this, God created the church. I Thessalonians speaks about the importance of a healthy community.

Community provides support, direction and connection. It is a sense that you belong to group and you share a common goal. My hope is that every person in the congregation feels personally connected to someone or something in our church family. We need to have a community where we can share our lives with each other. We need to be a part of something… to belong.

St. Augustine is starting small groups in 2021. We hope that every person in the church is a member of a small group. To accomplish this, we are adding several small groups to our activities. Small groups foster community involvement and spiritual growth. We want all St. Augustine members to be able to interact with a smaller group of people for support and spiritual nourishment.

May you find a place to share life together,
Pastor Anny+

Communion at Home
Consecrated wafers are now available for Communion at Home. The wafers are carefully prepared, the consecrated Body of Christ. Extensive provisions have been made to keep the wafers safe from the COVID-19 virus. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.

You may drive by and pick up communion wafers at the church on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Licensed Eucharist Minister will dispense the wafers in a container for you to use during our Sunday online live-streamed service.

Our hope is that this taste of heaven, the Body of Christ, will sustain you, heal you and give you hope through difficult times.
Fall Stewardship Campaign

The 2021 Bountiful Harvest Stewardship Campaign is coming to a close. The results as of December 31, 2020 are shown below. A budget of $250,000 in pledged income has been presented to the Vestry. We are beginning the year with a $13,156 deficit. We continue to pray that God will provide, and that we will meet the financial commitments of St. Augustine Church.

It is never too late to pledge for 2021. For those of you who have not yet pledged, please prayerfully consider how you can support St. Augustine Church by answering the call to pledge for the 2021 year. Call the church office for more information (916)435-9552.

FISH Youth Group
The FISH Youth Group has been meeting weekly over Zoom, led by Virginia Genato, Youth Group Leader. Currently, the group is going through the theology curriculum book, Blessed to Bless. The study goes through the Bible and its many lessons in order from Old Testament to New Testament.

When the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, Virginia hopes to plan one in-person gathering each month for a fun outing after a Bible study session. She also looks forward to sitting down with the members for dinner and an activity.

The group meets every Sunday night at 7 p.m. by Zoom. At the present time, a group of five individuals participate in the weekly meetings. The FISH Youth Group welcomes anyone, junior high through high school, who would like to join in the Sunday night discussions.

For more information about the FISH Youth Group, please contact Virginia at:

Do you have questions about the liturgy, our traditions or why St. Augustine does things a certain way? Join us every third Sunday for a quick discussion of all things Episcopal.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, January 17th. The classes will be led by Pastor Anny. The link to this class can be found on the church website. Click on Small Groups.
Annual Meeting
Save the Date!!!

January 31st
Please plan to be a part of our Annual Meeting, Sunday, January 31st following the 10 a.m. service. We will hear about the state of the parish, elect new Vestry members and elect 2021 Convention delegates.

The Vestry is the governing board of our congregation. Members of the Vestry serve three-year terms. These seats rotate years so there are always experienced members on the board.

This year we have five positions to fill. Three positions are three-year terms. We have one two-year term and a one-year term due to the early departure of Vestry members. More information and application forms will be available in early January.

It is holy work and requires a team approach from a diverse group of people who are faithful, committed, and open to the Spirit. We are looking for people who are passionate about St. Augustine’s work and want to partner with the Rector to help our ministries thrive.

People who want to create a vision for the church and help lead St. Augustine into the future as a spiritually vital congregation are encouraged to apply. We are looking for team players who are missional, spiritual, and strategic. We need candidates with a variety of gifts and outlooks to represent the whole congregation.

Canonical Requirements
Communicant (baptized & receives communion) in good standing
16 years or older
Regular church attendance
Pledge financially to the church
A RISE Update

I would like to thank everyone who participated in our January 2020 meal-packing event. 2020 has certainly been a struggle for everyone, and your continued support, especially financial, has been very meaningful and appreciated. There have been many times I have felt uncomfortable asking for financial support, but then I think about the people we serve and how they cannot ask for themselves.

We are not out of the woods regarding the pandemic, but I am hopeful we can start to roll out more activities this spring. We have scheduled a meal-packing event to be held at St. Augustine on Saturday, March 6th. Please mark your calendars now. More information will follow as we monitor the guidelines for our county.

On behalf of the people we serve, who do not have the means to ask or to say thank you, allow me to welcome in the New Year with gratitude. Please consider your financial gift for our March event.

As we are still unable to meet at the Church due to COVID-19 restrictions, Centering Prayer via Zoom is a blessing. It gives us a meaningful way to stay connected with each other and with God. We need God’s presence more than ever during this time. Our regular prayer time deepens our awareness that God wants to spend time with us, no matter how we do that. So, until further notice, we will meet weekly via Zoom.

We would love to have you join us for our Centering Prayer time:

Monday Evenings at 6:30 p.m.
Fridays at 12 p.m.

Centering Prayer will continue to meet via Zoom until COVID-19 restrictions are eased.

The St. Augustine Handy Helper Team Hard at Work!!!

The Handy Helper Team spread 32 cubic yards of Gorilla Hair mulch throughout the church landscaping. The Team is proud of the work they did, and the finished product is beautiful. The church grounds look well-loved!

Members who worked on this project were: Ken Cichocki, John Redmond, John Carroz, Bill and Paulette Schloetter, John Ronan, Ron and Cindy Harton and Jack Dillon. The Handy Helper Ministry is led by Ron Harton.

The Team was rewarded with Panera sandwiches supplied by Chris Deering, Junior Warden.
        Prayer Shawl Ministry

Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayer. They are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.

While most of our work is done at home, we used to have a lovely time of fellowship when we met each month in Canterbury Hall, and hope to do so again when it is safe. There is always an opening for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. We welcome our newest member, Sharon Taylor.

A couple of people have expressed an interest in learning to knit. If you are one of those, let me know. We just might do a Zoom class. Email Greer at [email protected].

We have several shawls in inventory. Contact Pastor Anny or Greer Nave if you know of someone who would like one. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer. They are presented with a beautiful card of our own design and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer.
The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
In December, The Gathering Inn had some folks test positive for COVID-19. They were quarantined at TGI facility in Roseville. St. Augustine provided meals that were delivered directly to the Roseville site so they could have a healthy hot meal.

Rhonda Wampler, Susan Ronan and Jane Buffington prepared the dessert for the Roseville center. Camille Grabowski and Barbara Woolman baked cupcakes for the Auburn site. Jack Dillon, Jim Quinney and John Redmond did a great job with the chicken, and Linda Bittman prepared the rice.

Please pray for our homeless brothers and sisters that they will fully recover from this pandemic and that 2021 will be a better year for all.

We are grateful for our team members who so willingly give of their time to prepare and deliver the meal. As we enter into the winter months, we pray that our homeless brothers and sisters will always have a meal and a warm place to sleep each night.

Janice & Rick Stenzel

Christmas Cupcakes
Camille Grabowski and Barbara Woolman baked 100 fudge chocolate chip cupcakes for The Gathering Inn site in Auburn. Camille added green buttercream frosting and sprinkles for a very festive dessert.
The Outreach Ministry Team
Our mission is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others.

The Outreach Ministry Team once again partnered with The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Daughters of the King and members of the congregation to provide Christmas joy to The Gathering Inn families. This year, $3,000 was raised for the families in need.

Outreach Ministry Team members continue to provide support for the monthly dinners for The Gathering Inn guests on the second Wednesday of every month. During this time of COVID-19, the meals are prepared at St. Augustine and delivered to a designated site.

In addition, Outreach sends a cooking team, once each quarter, to The Gathering Inn Auburn site, to prepare a meal on site in their designated kitchen trailer. The Gathering Inn is the only homeless shelter in South Placer County that serves singles, couples and families.

A heartfelt thank you to Camille Grabowski, our 2019 & 2020 chair, who guided the team through many successful events. We appreciate all the committee members and generous donors who have contributed to Outreach Ministry and continue to make these grants possible.

If you are interested in joining our team, we meet on the fourth Sunday of the month, presently on Zoom. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, January 24th, at 11:30 a.m. Please contact Peggy Doyle, 2021 chair at [email protected] or 916-749-2882.
The Gathering Inn Donations
The Gathering Inn Christmas gift card program was a huge success this year. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Daughters of the King, Outreach Ministry Team and members of the congregation raised $3,000 for this project.

Parents received a $50 Walmart gift card for each child, and each family received a $50 gift card for Christmas groceries. The families were very grateful to receive these funds.

The staff of The Gathering Inn has expressed delight that our donations were able to benefit so many of the families in need this year! Thank you to all who have donated to this program.
A Special Thank You!
The Gathering Inn Staff & Families thank St. Augustine for the $3,000 donation for family gift cards!
St. James Food Pantry
The St. James Episcopal Church Food Pantry is open, primarily serving people in the city of Lincoln. The number of families they support has risen in the past few months. They greatly appreciate our donations.

St. James Church has provided this wonderful ministry for many years. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more challenging and needed. Unlike some of the larger food cooperatives, the Pantry needs items packed in smaller containers.

These families are not homeless. The pantry helps each family with extra food so they can use their limited funds to stay current on rent, mortgage and utilities when they run a little short at the end of a week or month. Many of these families have multi-generations living under one roof and the extra food is so appreciated.

The following items are always in need:

Plain rice, raw pinto and black beans, tortilla shells (flour and corn), cereal, fruit (canned or cups - low sugar) pancake mix and syrup, hot sauce (Tomatillo), tuna fish and macaron & cheese.

Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to the St. James Pantry.

If you would like to become a weekly patron, contact Jim Quinney, and he will put you on the list and send emails of needed items.

Thank you for your continued support of this important ministry.
St. Luc Episcopal School - Thomassique, Haiti

The Reverend Guilene Fiefie, Priest in Charge at St. Luc, sends her Christmas blessings and wishes for a happy new year. With your help, we were able to send much-needed funds to stay current with our fantastic group of teachers and supply food for the children through December.

We are in the middle of our fundraising campaign for the school budget, and you will be seeing more information and ways to help support education in Haiti.
Please do not wait to make a monthly, quarterly or annual gift to support one child. You can write a check to St. Augustine and make a notation in the memo line: St. Luc Support. Or you can go online:

Hit the donate button and scroll down to St. Luc Partnership, enter the amount, and indicate monthly, quarterly, annual or one-time support.

Our hope is to host a fun, social activity at the earliest opportunity this year. We want to share more about the progress at St. Luc School and ways in which we can all support St. Luc School.

Thank you.

St. Vincent de Paul
Dining Room
A group of volunteers from the church work at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room in Roseville on the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., helping prepare a meal for those in need.  Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.

On December 17th, the volunteers prepared the famous church "barrel chicken," along with macaroni salad, chips, dessert and bottled water. Volunteers Jack Dillon and John Redmond prepared the chicken. Kathy Dillon made the macaroni salad, and Janice Stenzel and Kathryn Jordan assembled the lunches. The Supervisor of St. Vincent de Paul, John Mayne, passed out the lunches at 11:30. The volunteers have no contact with the clientele and are usually finished by 11:30 a.m.

Our volunteers for January 21st are Catherine Beckman and Deidre and Rob Shonk.

Volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce and Kathryn Jordan.

Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry: [email protected] or 916-599-1218.

Daughters of the King
Prayer is the most significant mission of Daughters of the King. So, to start the new year, prayer will be the focus of our January speaker.

DOK will meet via Zoom and telephone on Sunday, January 10th from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All women of St. Augustine are invited to participate.

Questions? Contact Carol Ann Hackley, DOK president, at [email protected].
