Hungry for Connection!

Never before in modern history have we felt the heaviness of collective loneliness. One of the gifts of the pandemic is the universal awakening of the value of relationships. I too have felt that deep hunger for relationships. Oh, how I miss embodied people! I miss coffee with friends. I miss game nights. I miss hugs! I especially miss worshiping together. There have been so many missed interactions. Social distancing teaches us even more that we are created in the image of God to have relationships.

The Trinity is God in relationship. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit live in perfect harmonious enjoyable relationship. It is in community that we can find the ultimate meaning of life. The heaviness we feel is the heartbreak of not living into our design as communal individuals. My hope for you is that you are paying attention to your need for community. That you meet the need in ways that keep you safe. Finally, that you pray for the eradication of the COVID -19 virus so we can meet in person to be the relationship people we are designed to be.

Speaking of community. I am thrilled to meet with you. Today, I begin the work of getting to know you. I plan to meet with you in groups, in families, and as individuals. We may not be able to meet in person as easily as I first dreamed. But we will make a way to connect. I look forward to getting to know you and your family. And you getting to know me and my family.

Over the next few months, I hope to hear your stories and your hopes of St. Augustine. I also look forward to dreaming with you about St. Augustine. I have a vision to further strengthen our already close - knit community. We will spiritually grow and grow in activities and numbers. I envision more senior events, more student ministries, more community outreach, and more spiritual activities.

However, I believe that leadership begins with listening. Before I implement any of my ideas, I want to hear from you. I want to hear your heart, ideas, and dreams. I really care about all your desires and I want to meet your needs. I want to hear what you long to do and where you feel the needs are in our Church. I want us to dream together about what St. Augustine could be.

I know that God is with us. God is blessing us. God is calling us to be a blessing to Rocklin. We will love working together , and we will care for one another and our neighbors.

With Christ's Love,
Pastor Anny+

A Drive-by Farewell to Fr. Tom...

Fr. Tom...God's blessing as you move to your new call at Faith Episcopal Church, Cameron Park. Thank you for your four incredible years of service.
St. Augustine Church
Dear Church,

I hold you all in my heart with gratitude and great affection. Now that I am leaving this beloved parish to serve in my next call, our relationship is changed. I will no longer be your pastor, and no longer available to offer guidance or sacramental ministry, and I leave you in attentive and capable hands with Pastor Anny. As our paths diverge, we follow faithfully the call of Christ that leads us into the fullness of God’s presence. I am excited for my next chapter and all that’s in store as the Spirit guides me deeper into the ways of love and Christ’s redeeming work. And I know that great joy lies in store as you also respond to the Spirit’s wisdom and work among you.

Stay safe, pray always, and keep the faith.
Fr. Tom+
Greetings from Minnesota
Land of 10,000 Lakes
Gary and I have settled into our home awaiting the time when it is safe for us to visit our family, which now includes a new granddaughter, Liv, born in March.

We anticipate a wonderful summer with family in this beautiful setting of forests, lakes, abundant birds and deer.

Many of you have asked about when another grief group and the series “Being Mortal” might resume. I await notification from health and diocesan authorities that it will be safe to gather.

You will remain in my thoughts and prayers,
The Reverend Maryellen Garnier

One of themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In these times of separation and anxiety, Centering Prayer can help us find that core trust that God is always with us.

Monday Evening Centering Prayer will begin gathering in the Church on July 6 th at 6:30 p.m. and will continue weekly, observing the new protocols, e.g. face masks, hand-sanitizers and physical distancing.

Starting July 3 rd , Friday Noon Centering Prayer meetings will alternate between in-person small groups at Church and Zoom. The first meeting in the Church will be July 3 rd . If you would like to join us on July 3 rd , please know you are most welcome. We will also be observing the new protocols, e.g. face masks, hand-sanitizers and physical distancing. If you would like to join us via Zoom, please contact Chris Deering (916-484-9195) or  [email protected] ) to receive a Zoom invitation.

If you are more comfortable praying on your own, that is great! Please see the information below to download the app on your device. We hope you will join us in person, on Zoom or on your own to learn how contemplation can enrich own faith experience.

We invite you to download the Centering Prayer app to your device.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
In June, we again prepared our famous “Chicken Church” meal of barrel chicken, rice, salad, rolls and dessert for our homeless brothers and sisters at The Gathering Inn. We will continue the practice of preparing the food at St. Augustine and then deliver it to St. John's and The Gathering Inn for serving until such time that it is again safe to go back to hosting the evening on-site.

We have developed a great routine with a minimum of volunteers rotating in, doing their task and leaving - always with social distancing. Although we cannot wait to go back to the old routine, this process accomplishes the same end result – serving a delicious meal to our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

By Janice Stenzel
Rhonda Wampler, Beth Sulc and Linda Bittman prepared the salad.
Linda Bittman prepared the rice and vegetables.
Jack Dillon and Jim Quinney packed up the meal and delivered to St. John's and The Gathering Inn.
Rick and Janice Stenzel worked very hard to organize the food prep and clean up the kitchen and work area.
The Gathering Inn Donations
The Gathering Inn is asking for High-Efficiency (HE) detergent and packaged men's undershirts in XL-XXL. Right now they are making plans to target an opening date for the clothes closet mid-July. A that time they will begin taking used clothing. Please leave your donations at the Church. Beth Sulc will deliver them to The Gathering Inn.
Thank you for your generosity!

The No Event – EVENT

Outreach Tele-Fundraiser

Saturday, July 25 th

6 p.m.

Please Plan to Participate!!!!!

As many of you know, we have two primary ways to fund outreach ministries at St. Augustine. The general fund is supported by our Easter and Christmas offerings, not designated to pledge income, and the annual spring fundraiser event. The second method is to ask for additional donations for a specific need such as Rise Against Hunger and other events.

This year we missed both the Easter Offering and our regular spring fundraiser, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently the funds to support outreach ministries are very low. We honestly cannot wait for the restrictions to be lifted, so we are going to hold a virtual fundraiser.

This will be a live event with presentations from members about outreach, some specific background and current information about programs and a chance to hear Pastor Anny share her views on outreach and her vision for us.

We will also include some fun gift items to bid on and wonderful desserts to bid virtually. All the items will be previewed on our website and you can pre-bid on any item.

Information About Our Virtual Fundraiser

  • There will not be any “tickets” for this event.
  •  We simply ask you to donate to Outreach via check, cash (be clear it is for outreach) or online donation. If you do it online, make sure to check the box and designate “Outreach."
  • Everyone who donates either prior to or during the event will be eligible in our raffle prize drawings. You do not have to be attending virtually to win a prize.
  • The suggested family donation is $50, however, donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.

The day of the event you can attend via Facebook Live by going to our website and enter live event. We will also post a Zoom invitation on our website. Specific instructions will be sent out before the event. We will be taking bids for the cakes and gifts through the Chat room and we will also provide telephone numbers to call or text your bids. This will be a fun and high-energy event and we hope you will join us.

What's Cooking?
While sheltering in place, a few of our fine St. Augustine chefs have been busy in the kitchen creating new and exciting dishes. Last month, eight of our chefs shared their recipes. This month we have two contributions. They both look delicious!
Chicken Enchilada Casserole
Penny Bess

1 dozen corn tortillas
4 cans cream of chicken soup
4 -5 oz cans boned chicken (or left-over chicken)
1 large onion - chopped and sauteed (or 2 T instant onion)
1 can chopped green chili
6 slices plain Swiss cheese

Grease 9 X 9 X 2 baking dish - or large round dish. Place layer of tortillas and cover with mixture of chicken, soup, chili and onions. Repeat until all ingredients are used. Top with Swiss cheese.

Bake at 375° 45 minutes to one hour.
Serves 8 generously.
Serve with guacamole, salad, extra warmed tortillas and butter. Yum!!!!

Editor's Note: I love the original recipe cards. Looks like my recipe box. kmq

Pudding in a Cloud
Melissa Lovin
One package instant chocolate pudding.
Mix with cold milk and follow directions on the box. Let sit for five minutes.
While pudding is sitting, spread cool whip around the dish – bottom and sides.
Spoon the pudding into the cool whip.
Great recipe for kids! Very easy!
St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room
A group of volunteers from St. Augustine Church regularly serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. They work from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., preparing, cooking and serving a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.

Due to the coronavirus shelter-in-place restrictions, St. Vincent de Paul closed their kitchen and dining room for the months of April and May. St. Vincent de Paul is now open to serve people. The volunteers will prepare a meal, place it in a brown bag, and Supervisor John Mayne, will be passing out the lunches.

The time for the volunteers to serve is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our volunteers for July 16 th are Deidre Shonk, Rob Shonk and Steve Broce.

Volunteers include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce and Kathy Jordan.

Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry:

Dear Sunday School Students,

Missing you all.

As you all know from reading the Regathering Safety Measures that were sent out, Sunday School will not resume when Church first opens.

We are looking forward to when we will be able to worship in person. Check your Shutterfly for weekly links to Godly Play lessons or the St. Augustine Facebook page.

Please feel free to reach out to Natalie at [email protected] or Kara at [email protected] if you have any questions or need assistance. We are so fortunate to have our Church community and want to make sure our kiddos know we are here for them.

Daughters of the King
Daughters of the King are continuing to reach out to their “Secret Sisters” during the pandemic, to provide encouragement and stay in touch. “Secret identities will be revealed either virtually or at a party” at Dottie Neil’s home in November, "depending on the situation at that time," Dottie said. “It’s important to continue sending cards to keep this program going!”

DOK will resume in-person meetings, when it is feasible. For now, members continue to pray for all who need God’s healing. Greer Nave is in charge of sending the prayer requests to our members.

In normal circumstances, DOK meets at 11:30 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month. Notification will be sent when in-person meetings are scheduled to resume. For more information, please contact Carol Ann Hackley at:

Brotherhood of St. Andrew

The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the fourth Saturday morning of the month. During this time of restrictions, due to COVID-19, the Brotherhood is observing social distancing and holding its meetings via Zoom.

At the June 27 th meeting, Fr. Tom was the special guest. He shared a blessing and discussed the importance of Male Rites of Passage. He commented this weekend is the fourth anniversary of his joining St. Augustine Church. It is also his last weekend at St. Augustine. Fr. Tom has been called to Faith Episcopal Church as Priest-in-Charge.

Our next meeting will be Saturday, July 25 th at 9 a.m. At their August meeting, the Brotherhood members will be discussing different options for conducting virtual fundraising projects. For the time being, all scheduled events for 2020 have been postponed.

"Even if you are not a member of the Brotherhood, and just have an interest in what we do, you are welcome to join us for a Zoom meeting," said Rob Shonk, Director. If you would like to learn more about the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, please contact Rob, Secretary John Redmond or Treasurer John Quigley.
