March 2021
From the Pastor...
My neighbors have a cherry tree in their front yard. A month ago, the bare tree started sprouting small green buds. About two weeks ago, those green buds started to show white tips. The white tips then began to change to pink tips. Then the blooms began to open to show small pink flowers. Today, the cascade of pink flowers bedazzles the whole tree. The tree gloriously sprouted and surpassed all the other trees on the street in magnificence. The evidence of Spring has arrived.

Spring is God’s way of showing us that resurrection surrounds us. One of the core Christian beliefs is that we believe in resurrection. I Corinthians 15:51-52 says Listen, I’m telling you a secret: All of us won’t die, but we will all be changed— in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the final trumpet. The trumpet will blast, and the dead will be raised with bodies that won’t decay, and we will be changed.”

Lent is a reminder that we all die. However, Lent is followed by Easter. Although our bodies die, Christ teaches us that we will live again. We will be resurrected. Death is not the end of the story. God will raise us from the dead and give us new bodies and new life.

God has written this story in nature itself. Spring is a testament to the resurrection. In Winter, we see that the land and trees die, but then in Spring those very trees shout God’s glory through blooming. Spring reminds us of resurrection. Thus Spring brings hope.

This Lent, I want you to hold onto the hope of resurrection. It is good to think deeply about our mortality but in a year filled with struggle, it is necessary to remember Christ’s promise of resurrection. This Lent, I hope you keep the hope of resurrection at the foremost of your minds and remember that resurrection is coming.

Speaking of hope, I see evidence of new life coming to St. Augustine. St. Augustine is opening for indoor in-person worship this month. Sunday, March 7th we will open the church for 25% attendance. Let us meet in person to worship God together. We will worship Christ in the same room! That gives me hope.

May you see new life this Spring as we wait for resurrection.

Vestry Retreat
Camille Grabowski
Paulette Schloetter
Jack Dillon
The Vestry members worked with Legos to build an image of the Mission of St. Augustine. St. Augie arrived to help Paulette with her work.
Vestry Retreat

The 2021 Vestry met for an all-day retreat Saturday, February 27th. The primary goal for the day was to connect and build a strong Vestry team. It is key that all our members can trust each other and work in a cohesive way. Discerning God’s plans for us was another part of our day. Setting clear goals for the future will help to obtain visible results.

Part of the day was spent reviewing the Parish Profile to better understand who we are as a faith community, reflecting on the mission and vision of St. Augustine. Time was spent imagining what St. Augustine might look like in three years, five years and ten years.

Pastor Anny led the Vestry members through a Practical Theology Model which will be used as a tool for reviewing the mission and vision of St. Augustine. The group also reviewed Vestry responsibilities.

Chris Deering was introduced as the new Senior Warden and Jack Dillon as Junior Warden. The remaining Vestry members are: Rick Lovin, Mike Lloyd, Barbara Sawyer, Kathleen Quigley, Steve Mershon, Paulette Schloetter and Camille Grabowski. Camille replaces Reese Allen who is unable to serve at this time.
Dear Friends,
I hope you will join us during Lent and participate in the FastPrayGive Lenten Study Program. The Lenten Study Groups meet Sundays at 9 a.m. or 7 p.m.
The FastPrayGive program was created by Andy Morris who works with Wesley Men’s Ministry, part of The United Methodist Church. He also serves as a Community Engagement Coordinator in the Nashville, TN market for Rise Against Hunger. Andy created this program to bring clarity to our call to answer the vast hunger need globally and to help us as Christians effectively communicate the meaning of Grace and how together we can all work to end hunger living in a Grace-filled world.

FastPrayGive (https://fastpraygive.org/) asks each of us to fast and take the $8 you would likely spend on lunch and donate it to support their mission. This support helps to fund grants for churches who have yet to hold a meal-packing event.

Pastor Anny would like to use this opportunity to “pay it forward” and help a parish in our diocese with a partial grant to cover the cost of hosting a meal-packing event. So, your donation goes to support our mission to end hunger and help a fellow Episcopal parish sponsor a meaningful outreach event this year.

I would also like to invite anyone to contact me if you would like to discuss global hunger and the various ways Rise Against Hunger is serving our global partners.

Thank you,
Jim Quinney

Special Note!
Due to health concerns, we have moved our meal-packing event to Saturday, May 1st at 1 p.m. We will communicate specifics as we draw closer to the event.

Prayer Shawl Ministry ~ Craft Club

Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayer. They are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.

As we are not meeting in person during the pandemic, members are invited to join the Craft Club meeting at 11 a.m. on the second Saturday of the month. Next meeting is Saturday, March 13th at 11. a.m. For those who are not working on any particular craft, just gathering to visit while we each work on our own project. We had a great time at the January and February meetings.

A couple of people have expressed an interest in learning to knit. If you are one of those, let Greer know. We just might do a Zoom class. Email Greer Nave at [email protected].

We have several shawls in inventory, contact Pastor Anny or Greer if you know of someone who would like one. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer. The prayer shawls are presented with a beautiful card of our own design and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer.
The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
February 2021 started the new year with outreach to our neighbors at The Gathering Inn, Roseville.  Our dedicated team prepared the famous barrel chicken, salad, cooked rice with vegetables, rolls, desert, fresh milk and water.

Many thanks to the team leaders who are responsible for various components of the meal each month. To Jack Dillon, who cooks and carves the barrel chicken. He also arranges the chicken pieces on large serving trays. Thanks go to Beth Sulc for preparing the salad with all the fixins; Linda Bittman for creating a wonderful rice dish with vegetable and almonds; and to Rhonda Wampler and her dedicated helpers for preparing a delicious homemade desert for each guest.

Jack, Rick and Janice start this process at about 1:30 p.m. with cleaning and dusting the chicken with spices and getting them ready for the barrels. Our other team members arrive at different times during the afternoon to complete their task.

This keeps the number of people in the kitchen to no more than three while maintaining social distancing and wearing face masks. Rich Wampler, Jack and Rick carve the chicken as the last step in the preparation process. This month, St. Augie, our traveling saint, helped in the kitchen as well.

At about 4:30 p.m., the completed meal along with paper plates, plastic dinnerware, granola bars and mandarins are loaded for delivery to a location in our area who will house the guests from The Gathering Inn.  Rich is usually tasked with delivering the wonderful meal prepared with the help of many hands to a location where The Gathering Inn will be housing our neighbors for the evening. Thank you, Rich.

As we continue this important ministry, we are looking forward to the time when we can feed and house our guests at St. Augustine.  Until then the blessed volunteers noted above will continue to do our best supporting the The Gathering Inn neighbors.

Rick & Janice Stenzel
The Outreach Ministry Team
From your generosity, the Outreach Ministry Team recently approved three grants. The first was $500 to purchase sanitation solution for the year for The Gathering Inn. The second was supporting the Bishop's Partnership Book of Dreams, specifically the wonderful ministry of The Center at St. Matthew's with $500. The third was a $500 donation to Acres of Hope in Auburn. To read more about these ministries in our area, visit the websites listed below.

Our mission is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others. If you are interested in joining our team, we meet on the fourth Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., presently on Zoom. For more information, please contact Peggy Doyle at: [email protected]

Food Pantry

The St. James Episcopal Church Food Pantry is open, primarily serving people in the city of Lincoln. The number of families they support has risen in the past few months. They greatly appreciate our donations.

St. James Church has provided this wonderful ministry for many years. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more challenging and needed. Unlike some of the larger food cooperatives, the Pantry needs items packed in smaller containers.

These families are not homeless. The pantry helps each family with extra food so they can use their limited funds to stay current on rent, mortgage and utilities when they run a little short at the end of a week or month. Many of these families have multi-generations living under one roof and the extra food is so appreciated.

In addition to the Lenten donations, the following items are always needed:

Plain rice, raw pinto and black beans, tortilla shells (flour and corn), cereal, fruit (canned or cups - low sugar) pancake mix and syrup, hot sauce (Tomatillo), tuna fish and macaroni & cheese.

Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to the St. James Pantry.

Thank you for your continued support of this important ministry.
St. Augustine of Canterbury
St. Augie of
St. Augustine Church, Rocklin
Where in the World is St. Augie???
You may have seen St. Augie pop up in various places around the community. Even Facebook and Instagram.

Well…St. Augie is our church’s special saint. He represents St. Augustine of Canterbury after whom our church is named. The sixth-century bishop St. Augustine of Canterbury is famous for his missionary work in England. and established his see, or Diocese, in Canterbury. By the time of his death in 605, he had created a solid foundation for England’s Christianity.

Our replica saint, nicknamed St. Augie, visits with different families in the parish. So far, he has spent time with Kathy and Jack Dillon, Chris and Bob Deering and Steve and Sharon Mershon.

Keep an eye out, he may come to your home soon. He made a surprise visit to the Vestry Retreat February 27th.
St. Augie went to the dentist with Chris Deering.
He also enjoyed the babbling water in the Deering's backyard.
St. Augie went to a work out session with Kathy Dillon.
And he enjoyed a massage.
St. Augie is helping Steve Mershon work at his desk.
He is enjoying time with St. Francis in Steve and Sharon's backyard.
St. Luc Episcopal School Thomassique, Haiti

A big shout out to our neighbors in Lincoln who are members of the Rotary Club of Lincoln. Thank you for your generous support of $1,500 making it possible to fund a new water filtration system for hygiene, food preparation and drinking. The remainder of the funds will be used to support our school feeding program.

It is not too late to make a monthly, quarterly or annual gift to support the operational budget at the school. We are roughly $1,500 short of fully funding our portion of the school’s 2020-2021 budget. Please consider the gift of education which brings hope to hundreds of children in Thomassique, Haiti.

Would you like to support the school and become part of our team? If so, let’s talk call or email Jim Quinney.

Thank you,
St. Luc Partnership Team

Our Haiti Team members are: Sara Postulka, Ashley Booker, Jerry Harner, Rick Lovin, Jack Dillon and Jim Quinney. Please contact Jim Quinney to discuss how to be involved with this wonderful ministry.

St. Vincent de Paul is a group of volunteers from the church who work at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room in Roseville on the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., helping prepare, cook and serve a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
The volunteers on February 18th prepared brown bag lunches. Volunteers were Jim and Steph Tilton and Jim and Carla Dolislager. The Supervisor of St. Vincent de Paul, John Mayne, passed out the lunches at 11:30.

Our volunteers for the upcoming session March 18th, 2021 are Catherine Beckman, Deidre Shonk and John Redmond.

Volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce, and Kathryn Jordan.

Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry: [email protected] or 916-599-1218.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew

The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the fourth Saturday morning of the month. During this time of COVID-19 restrictions, the Brotherhood is holding its meetings via Zoom.

At the February 27th meeting, Director Rob Shonk presented a virtual Bingo fundraising idea that the Chapter could consider while we are in the pandemic.

Jonathan Rogness, Placer County Boy Scout Coordinator, spoke about scouting activities in our region, including summer camp. He described ways in which Brotherhood members can support the Boy Scout program.

Their next meeting will be Saturday, March 27th at 9 a.m. via Zoom.
All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. For more information, please contact:
