From the Pastor...
...Choose Life
I received my Covid-19 vaccine early April. As I waited at the pharmacy for my name to be called, I imagined all the things I would do when I was fully vaccinated. My imagination soared with images of large gatherings of people at parties, watching movies in a crowed movie theater or walking shoulder to shoulder with people at the California State Fair.
As my mind wandered, I felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to be wise in how I filled my time. The Bible verse Deuteronomy 30:19 came to mind, “I set before you life and death, blessing and curing: therefore, choose life.” This verse referred to a time when the People of Israel were at a crossroads and moved into the land that God had given them. It was a new chapter for them. They were setting up their lives and creating their habits. Moses was reminding them to make good choices in the habits they establish.
I think it is a good reminder for us today. As we start our post-COVID lives, let us remember to be mindful of our habits. Remember to choose life. This means that we choose to incorporate God into our life. We need to make life choices that encourage our relationship with God, that remind us of God’s love, and help us to love others.
This includes choosing daily prayer or a daily quiet time, attending worship service, attending to your church relationships, serving the poor and giving to organizations that serve the good.
As you redesign your life, choose life.
May God guide you into love and peace in the next phase of life.

Godly Play
We will be using the Godly Play curriculum. We are so thankful to our congregation for helping support our ability to purchase the materials we needed. For those of you unfamiliar with Godly Play, here is a little bit about it:
|
|
|
"Godly Play offers a creative, child-honoring way of entering into and experiencing the biblical story. In Godly Play, we play with the language of God and God’s People: our sacred stories, parables, liturgical actions and silence. Through this powerful language, through our wondering, through the community of players gathered together, we hear the deepest invitation of all: an invitation to come play with God."

Celebration of a New Ministry
Friday, April 16, 2021
The Rev. Anny Genato
On a beautiful Friday evening, Bishop Megan Traquair officiated by Zoom at the Celebration of a New Ministry for The Rev. Anny Genato. Pastor Anny officially became the rector at St. Augustine.
Even though she has been with us for nine months, Pastor Anny has been a minister 'without portfolio' during her service at St. Augustine. This beautiful service made her call as our rector official.
|
|
Radiant in her elegant red chasuble, Pastor Anny received the tools of her new ministry from members of the Vestry: a Bible, books of prayers, a vessel of oil, the keys to the church and bread and wine. On behalf of Bishop Megan, The Very Rev. Sarah Quinney, priest in charge, St. James, Lincoln, presented Pastor Anny with a pitcher of water and the Constitutions and Canons of the church. She was also gifted with a beautiful stole hand-crafted by Christine Hohmann.
After the gift-giving, Pastor Anny's family joined her to extend their love and congratulations. Pastor Anny then honored her husband, Raymond, by presenting him with The Book of Common Prayer.
The Rev. Peter Rodgers, vicar at St. Andrews, Antelope, was the celebrant at the service. The Rev. Canon Cookie Clark, Church of the Epiphany, Vacaville, gave a homily that truly captured Pastor Anny’s personality. She gave wise advice to Anny to take good care of herself as well as others. Other visiting clergy included, The Rev. Mack Olson, rector at Church of the Epiphany, Vacaville, The Rev. Dr. Libby Vincent, Trinity, Folsom and The Rev. Dr. Suzanne Guthrie, spiritual guide, retreat leader and noted author.
A simple, yet elegant reception was held on the patio following the service. Beverages included a sparkling non-alcoholic wine and an excellent Brazilian champagne. The pièces de résistance of the event were the delectable cupcakes uniquely presented in small remembrance boxes.
Congratulations to Pastor Anny! We are so happy you have joined our St. Augustine family.

Pentecost
Sunday, May 23rd!
Pentecost comes from a Jewish harvest festival called Shavuot. It is celebrated on the 50th day from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles.
|
|
According to the Bible’s New Testament, the apostles were inspired to talk in tongues when the Holy Spirit descended on them as they prayed together at the Shavuot festival. Upon hearing the unfamiliar language spoken, the gathered onlookers in Jerusalem believed them to be drunk. But, Saint Peter explained they were in fact inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Peter then delivered the first Christian sermon, which led to the conversion and baptism of 3,000 people. It is this sermon that many believe was the birth of the Christian church as an official movement.
It is customary to wear red, orange or yellow clothing. Red is used at Pentecost, recalling the fiery tongues that descended upon the Apostles when they received the Holy Spirit.

Dear Friends,
A special thank you to all who participated in the Rise Against Hunger food-packing event held May 1st. We were able to pack over 15,000 meals.
These meals will help people meet their nutritional needs. RISE also brings transformational development to these communities by empowering community projects, helping to design better food systems and growing the movement.
The founder of RISE, The Rev. Ray Buchanan, says, "You will never end hunger by just feeding people...you must transform individual's lives and communities with food security."
Thank you and God bless you and your gifts!
Jim Quinney

Photo Notes...
A wonderful group of volunteers came to help: Students from Rocklin and Whitney High Schools, Pastor Sarah and friends from St. James, Pastor Anny's entire family (including her dog Mousse) and the Boy Scout Troop from Rocklin. Many thanks to all.
PS Masks and hair nets made it a challenge to recognize our friends, added lots of laughs to the afternoon. Even Pastor Anny fooled us all.

Monday Evening
Centering Prayer
For the time being, the Monday Evening Centering Prayer will continue to meet via Zoom at 6:30 p.m.
Zoom is providing us with a meaningful way to stay connected with each other and with God. We know how important God’s presence is to us during these times.

Friday Noon Centering Prayer
Now that we can gather in small numbers at church, the Friday Noon Centering Prayer group has elected to meet in the St. Augustine sanctuary. We will follow all protective protocols – six feet apart and masks required.
No reservations are required, just feel free to come. We start the prayer time at noon.
Meeting regularly in prayer deepens our awareness that God wants to spend time with us, no matter how or where we do that. We would love to have you join us for our Centering Prayer time:
Fridays at 12 p.m.
To join either the Monday or Friday Centering Prayer group, please contact Chris Deering or Steve Mershon at:
If you are more comfortable praying on your own, that is great! Please see the information below to download the app on your device. We hope you will join us on Zoom or on your own to learn how contemplation can enrich our faith experience.

Welcome Ministry
The Greeters and the Welcome Team/Newcomers Group have joined forces and are now part of the Welcome Ministry. What a great one-two punch for all those returning to the church or coming for the first time.
Once the COVID-19 restrictions are lessened, and we can begin to bring more people into the church, there will be exciting things to look forward to for this ministry. We will be following some practices found in Invite Welcome Connect, the current Walk Talk Series.
If you wish to become a member of the Welcome Ministry, please let Paulette know. There are approximately 120 families registered at St. Augustine. We have no new members in the last month.

Prayer Shawl Ministry ~ Craft Club
Are you one who likes to “pay it forward?” Making prayer shawls is one way to do that! We are always open to welcoming new members. Come brush up your skills or learn a new one. Help us make these tangible tokens of love, comfort and the power of prayer. They mean so much to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.
We are about ready to meet in person at the church again, but for the next time, let’s meet on May 8th at 11 a.m. on Zoom. The link is the Crafts Group on the Small Groups tab on the church website. We are looking for a weekday time and a name that reflects the interests of the group. Email me with ideas at [email protected].
We have several shawls in inventory. Contact Pastor Anny or Greer Nave, if you know of someone who would like one. To give a prayer shawl to someone outside of St. Augustine, talk to Greer. The shawls are presented with a beautiful card of our own design and a selection of prayers from The Book of Common Prayer.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
|
|
Over the past year, because of COVID-19 restrictions, we have modified how we provide a monthly meal to our homeless brothers and sisters at The Gathering Inn. With a limited number of volunteers and always using COVID-safe procedures, we prepare the food (Jack's famous barrel chicken and all the fixings) and send it off to be served at a church that is equipped to house our guests.
The meal always includes homemade desserts prepared by Rhonda Wampler and her team of bakers. We would like to develop a rotating team to assist with the baking. Please consider signing up for this very important ministry. A specific recipe is selected each month. With a large enough group of volunteers, you may be asked to bake only once per quarter. If you would like to be a part of the TGI bakers, contact Rhonda Wampler at [email protected].
Please consider signing up for this very important ministry and continue to pray for those who are less fortunate.

The Gathering Inn is now fully open and functioning normally. They are still following strict COVID-19 protocols. Hopefully they will be able to open the medical clinic soon.
TGI is able to take donations of gently used clothes and HE laundry detergent. Beth Sulc will pick up the donations at church and deliver them to TGI.

The St. James Episcopal Church Food Pantry is open, primarily serving people in the city of Lincoln. The pantry recently took a survey of the current clients and determined they are serving 70-80 individuals each week.
This is a wonderful ministry impacting many people who just need some assistance as their budget for food during a month gets really stretched. This food assistance is what likely keeps the lights on, the gas for heat, cars to get to work or the rent paid for a roof over their heads.
The Food Pantry continues to need plain rice, raw pinto and black beans, tortilla (flour and corn), cereal, strawberry preserves, fruit (canned or cups - low sugar) pancake mix and syrup, hot sauce (Tomatillo), tuna fish and macaroni & cheese.
Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to the St. James Pantry.
Thank you for your continued support of this important ministry. If you would like to become a consistent grocery cart patron for the pantry, please contact Jim at:

St. Luc Episcopal School Thomassique, Haiti
It is hard to imagine that school will be out for the summer soon, both here in Rocklin and in Haiti. The children at St. Luc are doing well, and class attendance is now back to pre-COVID enrollment levels.
But as sure as the school year ends, a new school year will begin. We have new partners who have joined our St. Augustine family in supporting the children, faculty and staff of St. Luc. Our relationship with The Rotary Club of Lincoln continues to grow and develop. They have given us another generous gift of $1,400 to help continue their support of water/hygiene and our meal program.
St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Westavia Hills, Alabama, in the Birmingham area, is proving to be a wonderful partner, and we have had Noralyn from their outreach team join our regular monthly meetings. Our friends at St. Stephen’s are generously joining all of you in support of these beautiful children and their wonderful school. Plans are even being discussed for a trip to St. Luc in Haiti shortly after Thanksgiving of this year.
