From the Pastor...All Saints' Day
|
|
The fried chicken aroma filled the car and made my six-year-old tummy grumble. I peered over the seat at the eight buckets of steaming Kentucky Fried Chicken. “Can I have a drumstick? I like the crispy ones,” I said to my GranJane. “No, those are for the senior center. They are a special treat for people who live in the convalescent home. KFC donated them to cheer their day,” she responded. “Oh, I really want one,” I pouted. She didn’t turn to me but kept driving down the road. We pulled into the driveway.
My grandmother opened the door to the convalescent home where she volunteered every Tuesday and ushered me and the fried chicken into the building. She cheerfully smiled at every resident as she walked down the hall. Saying “Hi” to each by name and asking them about their grandchildren. She’d say, “I have hot chicken; come and get some,” as we walked to the dining room. Each resident’s face lit up when they saw Jane Fluker walk towards them.
My grandmother was one of God’s saints. I had the pleasure of knowing her and learning from her. One of her ministries was to the people at the convalescent home. She led an activity time for them. She would bring in games or tell stories. She cared for them. Plus, she brought them Kentucky Fried Chicken that she convinced the KFC manager to donate.
She interacted with people so well. She would kneel to people’s level and touch their arm or back as she talked to them. She would tell jokes or tease them. People always felt known and loved by her.
I am a better person because I learned from her. Watching her interact taught me how to care for others. I learned the healing power of a touch on the shoulder. I learned that fun makes the day better. I learned to put my ego aside and be silly and play games. I learned that good food was food for the soul.
All Saints' Day is Sunday, November 1st. The New Testament refers to all of God’s people as saints. All who follow Christ are considered a saint. Any person who led you to love God or love people better are the saints in your life.
Of course, we celebrate those of heroic faith who deserve special honor, but we should also celebrate those who nobly follow God in ordinary ways. Those are the people who influence us the most. They are our grandparents, parents, Sunday School teachers, coaches, priests, school teachers, friends and fellow church members. They are the people who loved us, taught us and showed us Christ. They also deserve special honor today.
Who are the saints in your life? Who taught you about God? Who made you feel loved? Who taught you to follow Christ? Today, let’s celebrate those saints both alive and living in eternity who led us to become who we are. Let’s celebrate all the saints!
In Christ’s hope,
Pastor Anny+

Holy Eucharist
In-Person/Indoors Services
We are back!
We began in-person/indoor services on September 27th following God’s invitation to meet together as believers (Hebrews 10:25). We have been successful doing in-person/indoor services during COVID-19 for a month.
After successfully hosting our first 10 a.m. in-person/indoor service, I asked the 8 a.m. outdoor service attendees if they would like to meet inside. They unanimously agreed to meeting inside.
We also brought the Tuesday Eucharist service indoors. Therefore, we are no longer offering outdoor services. This is a relief for Pastor Anny. She no longer must run after consecrated wafers that blow across the parking lot.
The in-person/indoor worship services are going extremely well, thanks to all of our volunteers. Our greeters and ushers welcome parishioners at the door with a temperature and health check. Then the parishioners are escorted to their assigned chairs. Every person or family sits six feet apart from others. People wear masks except when speaking from the altar area.
Some things have changed. We hum instead of sing, the Lay Eucharist Ministers come to you, and the passing of the peace is waving instead of hugging. Other COVID-19 adjustments make up for it though, like our amazing soloists’ voices filling the space with beautiful songs.
We have not forgotten those at home. We are live-streaming our 10 a.m. service. We invested in our technology to improve the live-stream service. We also offer Communion at Home. We provide consecrated wafers for those at home which may be picked up at the church drive-by every Saturday, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. We have coffee hour on Zoom after church. Many of our meetings are hybrid, in-person, and by phone and Zoom.
Worship continues to be valued at St. Augustine. We come together as community to praise God. We continue to be a safe place for people seeking God. We will continue to be innovative and thoughtful, so we can worship in a safe place.
RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED!
You will need to make reservations to attend the 8 and 10 a.m. services. Please respond by emailing or calling the church office to let us know you are coming and how many will be attending.
Church Office: 916-435-9552
We need to comply with the safety standards the state of California, the Diocese of Northern California and our Vestry have created to keep our members safe.
If you attend you will need to:
1. Wear a mask
2. Stay six feet from others
3. Use hand-sanitizer
4. Check-in and have your temperature taken
|
|
Please join St. Augustine for communion. You may participate through our online streamed service. It is important to us that we share Eucharist with all who desire life-sustaining gifts of the holy meal. It is imperative that we share the table with those who are not able to be with us in person; we are one body in Christ.
Communion wafers are now available for Communion at Home. The wafers are carefully prepared, consecrated Body of Christ. Extensive provisions have been made to keep the waters safe from the COVID-19 virus. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.
You may drive by and pick up communion wafers at the church on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Licensed Eucharist Minister will dispense the wafers in a container for you to use during our Sunday online streamed service.
Our hope is that this taste of heaven, the Body of Christ, will sustain you, heal you and give you hope through difficult times.

A different path in ministry...
|
|
After twenty-seven years of ordained ministry serving five parishes, and sixteen years as Director of Spiritual Care at a Silicon Valley hospital, I have chosen a different path in ministry.
I am retiring as Associate Priest at St. Augustine after seven years of serving and loving you. I will be walking alongside my granddaughters, Chloe and Liv, as they grow and thrive in Minnesota.
It has been a blessing to be with you, and I know that St. Augustine will continue to prosper with the support and leadership of a strong, caring congregation.
You will remain in my prayers, as I hope that I will remain in yours.
God’s Peace,
The Reverend Maryellen Garnier
|
|
In loving gratitude...
Dear St. Augustine Church Members,
It is with a heavy heart that I accept Pastor Maryellen Garnier’s resignation from St. Augustine. Pastor Maryellen has blessed St. Augustine in countless ways. Her pastoral heart leads her ministry as her deep care and hope in Christ greets every person she meets. St. Augustine is a better church because of her.
I understand that Pastor Maryellen provided valuable pastoral support. It may be tempting to call her for care when life gets rough. Although she loves you all, to make her transition to retired life easier, she asked that there be no contact.
Also, our canonical law states that a clergy person is required to have no contact for one year with a parish and its parishioners when she/he leaves a church. This guideline is to secure good boundaries. It helps people grieve the loss of the clergy person. It also allows room for the clergy person to bond to their new church home.
I am available for pastoral care and am assembling a team to assist with care. In addition, we will have support groups available. I plan to proceed with the Widow’s Grief Group and the Being Mortal book study. It may not be Pastor Maryellen’s special touch, but I hope we provide the spiritual nourishment you need.
I am grateful for Pastor Maryellen’s service to St. Augustine! We are better due to her ministry. Her legacy will continue here. She will always be counted as our friend. The lessons we have learned from her will produce spiritual fruit for years to come. We will deeply miss her!
We wish Pastor Maryellen and Gary the very best in this new journey. They will be enjoying more quality time with their granddaughters, Chloe and Liv, in Minnesota.
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Anny Genato+

Annual Meeting
Save the Date!!!
Please plan to be a part of our Annual Meeting, Sunday, January 31, 2021, following the 10 a.m. service. We will hear about the state of the parish, elect new Vestry members and elect 2021 Convention delegates.
The Vestry is the governing board of our congregation. Members of the Vestry serve a three-year term. These seats rotate years so there are always experienced members on the board.
This year we have four positions to fill. Three positions are three-year terms. We have one 1-year term due to the early leave of a vestry member. The congregation votes on the members and the candidates who receive the most votes fill the seats. We will email out more information and nomination forms in early December.
Stay tuned!

One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In these times of separation and anxiety, Centering Prayer can help us find that core trust that God is always with us.
Monday Evening and Friday Noon Centering Prayer will continue meeting by Zoom until COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
If you would like to join either the Monday or Friday Centering Prayer group, please contact Chris Deering or Steve Mershon at:
If you are more comfortable praying on your own, that is great! Please see the information below to download the app on your device. We hope you will join us on Zoom or on your own to learn how contemplation can enrich our faith experience.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Soft, warm and full of love... a prayer shawl is a tangible token of the power of prayer. They are given to those needing a physical reminder of our love and concern in times of healing and stress.
While most of our work is done at home, we used to have a lovely time of fellowship when we met each month in Canterbury Hall, and hope to do so again when it is safe. There is always an open chair for anyone who would like to be a part of this ministry. If you do not knit or crochet, we will teach you. We welcome our newest member, Sharon Taylor.
We have several shawls in inventory. Contact Pastor Anny or Greer Nave if you know of someone who would like one. If you would like to give one to someone not a member of St. Augustine, contact Greer . They are presented with a beautiful card of our own design, and a selection of prayers from the Book of Common Prayer.

The Teach Team has worked tirelessly to the make the online streaming service a quality experience. The team has spent countless hours identifying and solving the problems.
Many thanks go to Bob Deering, the Tech Team leader. He has researched online services, learned new technology, experimented with the equipment and made many changes. We are grateful for all of Bob's tireless work.
Rick Lovin has joined Bob in leading this Team. His expertise will ensure continued quality streaming. Thanks go to Steve Mershon, Jim Quinney, Jack Dillon, Ray Genato, Cindy Harton and Rich Wampler, also members of the Tech Team.
In addition, Sam and Ian Weston have helped with technical problems that have improved the streaming service. The team invites other members of the congregation to join the Tech Team. This would give Tech members a chance to sit in the sanctuary and enjoy the service.
Improvements have also been made to the audio/visual corner of the sanctuary. The sound booth has been enlarged and improved. This project allows the camera to sit higher and provides more space for the additional equipment needed for streaming.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
|
|
In October, we again prepared our famous barrel chicken with all the fixings and a homemade dessert for The Gathering Inn guests. Because of COVID-19, we are still not able to house our guests. We prepare the meal and transport it to a designated church whose members serve and house everyone for the night.
We are grateful for our team members who so willingly give of their time to prepare and deliver the meal. As we enter into the winter months, we pray that our homeless brothers and sisters will always have a meal and a warm place to sleep each night.

The Outreach Ministry Team
|
|
In the spirit of our Church tradition, the mission of Outreach Ministry is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others.
Outreach Ministry will again partner with Brotherhood of St. Andrew and Daughters of the King to provide Christmas cheer to The Gathering Inn families. To enable TGI parents the dignity to purchase Christmas gifts for their children, Outreach will provide a Walmart gift card shopping experience. Outreach will also offer Walmart cards to each newly placed family so they can purchase a Christmas meal of foods of their choice.
Outreach Ministry continues to provide and prepare the monthly dinner for The Gathering Inn guests on the second Wednesday of every month. During this time of COVID-19, the meals are prepared at St. Augustine and delivered to a designated church. In addition, Outreach sends a cooking team, once each quarter, to The Gathering Inn Auburn site, to prepare a meal on site in their designated kitchen trailer. The Gathering Inn is the only homeless shelter in South Placer County that serves singles, couples and families.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to Outreach Ministry and continues to make these grants possible. If you are interested in joining our team, we meet on the first Sunday of the month. Presently that is on Zoom. Our next meeting will be on Sunday, November 1st, at 3 p.m. Please contact Camille Grabowski at [email protected] or 916-409-5509.

The Gathering Inn Donations

Put a Smile on the Face of a Gathering Inn Child
Christmas Morning
|
|
Planning has begun for the Christmas charity which is supported by The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, The Daughters of the King, and St. Augustine Outreach Ministry. This year private donations are also being sought from individual parishioners who wish to support the expansion of the annual Christmas program for the homeless families served by The Gathering Inn.
As in the past, the parents of each child will receive a $50 Walmart gift certificate to shop for Christmas gifts for that child. Additionally, each family placed in housing will receive a $50 Walmart gift certificate to purchase food for a Christmas dinner.
This year the three organizations have answered The Gathering Inn’s call to expand the program to all children and their parents either in residence on Christmas or placed in housing within the last six months. We are anticipating the gift cards to benefit around 40 children and 23 families. The total cost of the program is anticipated to be approximately $3,000.
Your help will be so appreciated. You can donate either by check or on-line. If made by check, please write “ TGI gift cards” in the memo line. If made on-line, go to “donations” then to “other” and input “TGI gift cards."
In order that the parents have the time to shop, we would appreciate the donations by November 30th. The staff of The Gathering Inn has expressed delight that we have decided to benefit so many of their children in need this year!

The St. James Food Pantry is open at the church in Lincoln, primarily serving people in that community. The number of families they support has risen in the past few months. They greatly appreciate our donations.
Unlike some of the larger food cooperatives, the Pantry needs items packed in smaller containers. Here is a list of popular items: fruit cups, peanut butter (16 ounce), Mac n Cheese, cereals, canned tuna and chicken, pinto beans (small bags), rice and small boxes of pancake mix.
Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to St. James Pantry. Thank you for your generosity.

St. Vincent de Paul
Dining Room

Volunteers from St. Augustine Church work at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room in Roseville on the third Thursday of each month. We volunteer from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., helping prepare and cook a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
On October 15th, the volunteers prepared spaghetti and garlic bread for lunch, including a dessert pastry and trail mix. Volunteers Kathryn Jordan, Steve Broce and Rob Shonk assembled the lunches. The Supervisor of St. Vincent de Paul, John Mayne, distributed the lunches at 11:30.
Our volunteers for the upcoming session, November 19th, are John Redmond, Jack Dillon and Steve Broce.
Volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce and Kathy Jordan.
Please contact Rob Shonk if you are interested in working in this important ministry: [email protected] or 916-599-1218.

A couple of years ago, Sam Weston brought his dream of a Bear Ministry to St. Augustine. He envisioned us building bears, with special “blessed” hearts, to be given to youngsters in the hospital. He wanted them to have something to hold on to, something they could turn to when they were scared, hurting or just needed a friend. Well, many of us helped Sam build some bears. And they were welcomed and loved by their lucky recipients.
There is still an inventory of materials to build more bears. Sam is bringing this project back and is looking for some help with building them. He needs sewers, stuffers and hand stitchers.
Can you lend a hand???? If so, please contact Sam at:
He would be happy to fill you in on the details of how you can be of help.

Have you had a Popcorn Visit from Pastor Anny? She is so excited to be our new rector, but is disappointed she cannot meet you all in person.
Sooo....she has embarked on Popcorn Visits. Vestry members are driving Pastor Anny around to each St. Augustine home to ring the doorbell and meet you in person.
Be patient! This may take through the month of November. But Pastor Anny will soon be ringing your doorbell to meet you and present you with a package of microwave popcorn.

FISH Youth Group Welcomes New Leader
St. Augustine welcomes Virginia Genato as our new youth leader. Under Virginia’s direction, the FISH Youth Group is now meeting every Sunday night at 7 p.m. for Bible study and discussion. For the time being, the meetings will be held on Zoom.
Currently, the group is going through the theology curriculum book, Blessed to Bless. The study goes through the Bible and its many lessons in order from Old Testament to New Testament. So far, they have touched on the topics of sibling struggles, maturity and stewardship.
When the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, Virginia hopes to plan one in-person gathering a month for a fun outing after a Bible study session. She also looks forward to sitting down with the members for dinner and an activity.
Virginia’s passions are service and volunteer work. Over time, she plans to incorporate a service component into the FISH Group sessions. Hopefully, in the future, the group can also plan a retreat.
Virginia is the daughter of Pastor Anny and her husband, Raymond. She is a fourth-year public health student at the University of Reno, Nevada. She will graduate Spring 2021. She hopes to purse a career in Occupational Therapy with a specialization in pediatric disabilities. She currently works as a donor center technician at a plasma donation center.
For more information about the FISH Youth Group, please contact Virginia at:

Dear Sunday School Students,
Sunday School is busy planning our return!!!
EXCITING NEWS - We were able to purchase the Fall and Winter Godly Play materials. We now have all the materials needed to fully adopt Godly Play. Thank you to St. Augustine for placing an emphasis on our youth and funding our program.
On Thursday October 28th, we had a Sunday School planning meeting finalizing our plans for getting back to weekly in-person Sunday School, planning monthly get-togethers, discussing the Christmas Pageant and even looking all the way forward to the possibility of Vacation Bible School.
Please keep your eyes out for an email from us updating you with our plans. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Natalie or Kara.
Thank you

With a Thanksgiving theme, Daughters of the King will learn about the giving ministry of the Outreach Team. Camille Grabowski will be our guest speaker. Camille, who chairs the Team, will explain the mission of Outreach, its function on behalf of St. Augustine and the projects beyond the church’s walls currently benefiting from the program.
The Zoom and telephone hybrid meeting, Sunday, November 8th, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., also will feature a presentation by Beth Sulc. She will speak on “Thanks for Giving,” the Christmas project that will benefit The Gathering Inn parents and children.
Members have been asked to “prayerfully consider their contributions” and send them to the church. DOK members have joined with The Brothers of St. Andrew and the Outreach Team as well as members of the congregation to will contribute to Walmart gift cards for children’s gifts and holiday meals.
Previous DOK meetings via Zoom and telephone have featured Pastor Anny, speaking in September on her “Calling” to the ministry, and The Rev. Maryellen Garnier, sharing a message at the October meeting on “The Spirituality of Children.”
DOK members will be revealing their identities to their “Secret Prayer Sisters,” after a year of sending cards and gifts anonymously. Dottie Neil, in charge of this program, normally schedules a party in November for the “revealing” - not possible under pandemic restrictions. Members decided to reveal their identities to their Secret Sisters in a way of their own choosing. “Creativity is encouraged!”
All women of St. Augustine are invited to visit DOK meetings and to join the next class of new members.
For more information, please contact Carol Ann Hackley, DOK president:

Brotherhood of St. Andrew
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew holds its regular monthly meetings at 9 a.m. in Canterbury Hall the fourth Saturday morning of the month. During this time of COVID-19 restrictions, the Brotherhood is holding its meetings via Zoom.
All men and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend a meeting. Even if you are not a member of the Brotherhood, and just have an interest in what we do, you are welcome to join us on Zoom. Rob Shonk is the Director.
The Brothers met on Saturday, October 24th and shared experiences that they have had at St. Augustine Episcopal Church. The Brotherhood went through their normal business proceedings. They received an update on the $1,000 donation approval in coordination with the Daughters of the King and the Outreach Team for the Gathering Inn families for Christmas time. The three groups are raising funds for Walmart gift cards for the children, and Walmart gifts cards for families to have a nice dinner this Christmas.
The plaque has been secured on the Ralph Nave Memorial Bench outside the kitchen entrance to the church. John Redmond showed a photo of the plaque. Ralph was the founding member of the Brotherhood chapter at St. Augustine. The plaque and bench are in honor of Ralph's contributions to the church and to Brotherhood.
The next Brotherhood meeting will be held November 28th, at 9 a.m. on the St. Augustine Zoom. Father Peter Rodgers, from St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Antelope, will give a special program celebrating St. Andrew’s Day,
November 30th.
