Bountiful Harvest
Proverbs 3:9-10
Honor the Lord with your wealth
and with the first of all your crops.
Then your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your vats will burst with wine.
It is stewardship drive time at St. Augustine
This is the time of year we talk about being generous to the church. In this time, we ask you to think about your annual contribution to the work of St. Augustine. It is time to pledge to the church and God’s work in the world.
Fear during the pandemic
We are called to tithe every year, but especially in 2021. St. Augustine’s finances are hurting due to the pandemic. We do not have the “pass the plate” giving so we are 20% down in our usual giving. We need you to continue to give to the church so the work we all do can go on. Pandemic fear has swept the country, and this may reflect itself in giving. Similar to the 2020 Great Toilet Paper Shortage, the need to horde money tempts us to trust money and not God.
God’s nature of generosity for a bountiful harvest
Scriptures shows us that God is exceptionally generous. God provides a bountiful harvest for our enjoyment. (1 Timothy 6:17). The universe is filled with beauty, variety and joy, because God wants to give lavishly to us. There are over 400,000 types of flowers, 200,000 types of edible plants, and over 41 species of wild cats in the world. Humans are equipped with our senses so we can enjoy all these gifts.
We are called to be generous like God
Made in the image of a generous God, we were designed to be generous with our time, talent and treasure. We are called to love our neighbors generously. Each Christian is responsible to be generous. Greed and fearful hoarding go against how we were made to reflect God’s love. This is why, when you buy into fearful behavior, it only increases the fear. We were not designed to live out of fear but of love.
The local church’s focus of giving
The church is the primary focus of our giving. The local church is called to fulfill Jesus’ kingdom purposes in the world. We as Christians combine our efforts in the local church to work toward the world’s common good. St. Augustine comes together with a purpose to serve our community. It is only together that we can fulfill the Great Commission.
Our faithful presence can meet the neighborhood’s needs, reflect the local culture, and be the light of Christ in the community more than a single solitary faithful person. Tithing and giving to the local church is our responsibility as members of that community. St. Augustine can only thrive when its members are committed to do the work of God in the world. The local church is irreplaceable in its mission to our community.
St Augustine’s mission
St. Augustine continues to thrive during this crisis. We continue to live our mission of providing “a safe place for people seeking God.” We are living our calling to be a “safe place” in new ways. Right now, safety means to make sure people stay safe from the pandemic. Safety also means providing spiritual nourishment and encouragement during hard times.
I am currently doing a sermon series called “Thriving During Covid-19.” We are giving you resources to remain spiritually alive and revived during this worldwide dry time. St. Augustine is providing three weekly Eucharistic services. We are live streaming our services for home-based people. We are also providing numerous spiritual resources to keep you encouraged, like weekly Compline services, Centering Prayer, spiritual exercises before the Eucharist and a weekly devotional.
The pandemic caused the whole world to brake, stopping our momentum. However, momentum is picking up as we start our ministries again. We have begun our youth group and children’s ministries. We are starting all ministries in new and accessible ways.
In 2021, we will live even more into our mission to be “a safe place for people seeking God.” In 2021, we will live into St. Augustine’s four initiatives: community, Christian spirituality, invitation and purpose.
We will continue our calling as a place to seek God. In addition to the ministries we have now, we will start a small group initiative in 2021. We want all St. Augustine members to be able to interact with a smaller group of people for support and discipleship. We will begin a Bible study and other small groups to meet your needs.
We will continue to live our mission. The pandemic does not stop God’s work in our neighborhood. We will give our neighbors a sense of God’s love, security and purpose. In 2021, we will be fully charging ahead to serve our community during hard times. I will preach a series called, “Evangelism for shy people.” We will also plan invitational events for neighbors. We will be innovative and missional as we rethink how to be the Church during a crisis.
St. Augustine is a welcoming, vibrant and committed church that thrives in difficult times. We will continue to be a strong church that helps others thrive in difficulty. God is with us. God will continue to provide for our needs in the pandemic. The pandemic has not changed who God is.
God’s bountiful harvest will give us all what we need to succeed and live into our mission. Life may be harder during the pandemic, but God is bigger!
In Christ’s hope,
Pastor Anny+

Holy Eucharist
In-Person Service
Dear Friends in Christ,
"Don't stop meeting together with other believers." (Hebrews 10:25)
Let us worship Christ in the same room!
St. Augustine opened for in-person services Sunday, September 27th, at the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. service. It was wonderful to see so many of you gather to worship together.
Placer County is now open for places of worship to meet in person. St. Augustine will continue to meet inside for worship with modifications.
"Places of worship can open indoors with modifications of 25% their capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer." https://covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy/ For St. Augustine, that means we can have a maximum of 60 people in our sanctuary.
RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED!
You will need to make reservations to attend the service. Please respond by emailing or calling the church office to let us know you are coming and how many will be attending.
Church Office: 916-435-9552
We need to comply with the safety standards the state of California, the Diocese of Northern California and our Vestry have created to keep our members safe.
If you attend you will need to:
1. Wear a mask
2. Stay 6 feet from others
3. Use hand sanitizer
4. Check-in and have your temperature taken
I am excited to continue to worship with you in person!
Grace and Peace in Christ Jesus,
Pastor Anny+
Please note: St. Augustine will continue to gather for services on the patio Tuesdays at 10 a.m. as well as on-line streaming Sundays at 10 a.m.

Fall Stewardship Kickoff
It is fall and that means it is time to launch our Annual Stewardship Campaign. We give thanks to God for the Bountiful Blessings He has brought to us, for St. Augustine Episcopal Church, for the love and support it provides and for the ministries that work to serve each of us.
What does it mean to celebrate a Bountiful Harvest? What does it look like to be a Fruitful Congregation and Church? May we suggest these five Practices of Fruitful Congregations:
• Radical Hospitality
• Passionate Worship
• Intentional Faith Development
• Risk-Taking Mission and Service
• Extravagant Generosity
“Gracious God, open my heart today to live these practices so that I may share Your love with others as You have shown Your love to me. Help our congregation to deepen our understanding of these through prayer and practice so that others will see You through our ministry.”
Robert Schnase, a Bishop of the United Methodist Church
Yes, this year’s campaign will feel different as we modify our stewardship to comply with COVID-19 requirements. Pastor Maryellen said, “This unprecedented time calls for unprecedented action and generosity.”
We will kick-off our celebration, our Bountiful Harvest, with testimonies from members of our congregation starting October 11th. You will receive updated information about the state of St. Augustine, membership, programs and financial data.
On Sunday, October 25th, you will be given a full Stewardship Packet and a SURPRISE special gift of thanks from St. Augustine. If you are in church that day, you can take your packet with you. If you are not able to attend services, there will be a Drive-by event from 12-2 p.m. so you can pick up your packet and special thank you! And for those who attend our Tuesday morning services, you can pick up your packet and gift on October 27th. You will receive an email to RSVP. Reservations will be required.
More than ever we need your support. As you have seen in our posted financials, we have not kept up with our giving this year. The challenges of COVID-19 have had an impact, and yet our expenses continue whether you are in attendance or not. Please be in prayer for God’s guidance as you consider your commitment to St. Augustine.
Thank you for your generosity.

Blessing of the Animals
This year, your treasured pets will receive a virtual blessing at the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 4th. Pastor Anny will bless your pets during announcements (virtually) at the 10 a.m. service. If you are worshiping in-person that day, you are welcome to bring a photo of your pet to hold up for a blessing. If you are participating on-line, gather your pets or pictures around the computer screen for this blessing.
Blessing of the Animals is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of the environment and animals. He praised all creatures, poor and sick, as brothers and sisters under God. St. Francis especially loved animals and was known to have preached sermons to them. His feast day is October 4th. St Francis was born in 1181 and died in 1226.

One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In these times of separation and anxiety, Centering Prayer can help us find that core trust that God is always with us.
Monday Evening and Friday Noon Centering Prayer will not be able to gather in the church until COVID-19 restrictions are eased. For the time being, Monday Evening and Friday Noon Centering Prayer will be held by Zoom.
If you need more information, please contact Chris or Steve at:
If you are more comfortable praying on your own, that is great! Please see the information below to download the app on your device. We hope you will join us on Zoom or on your own to learn how contemplation can enrich our faith experience.

The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
|
|
As in previous month's since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the September meal for The Gathering Inn was prepared by St. Augustine and then delivered to St. John's Roseville and The Gathering Inn where the guests are housed for the night. As always, we prepared our famous barrel chicken, salad, rice, Hawaiian rolls and a homemade dessert. The guests loved it!
This month was a little different - Rick and I took the time off to prepare for our son's wedding. We would like to thank everyone who helped with the TGI meal preparations, especially Jack Dillon, who took over the lead responsibilities and did the grocery shopping, cooking and coordinating.

The Outreach Ministry Team
|
|
In the spirit of our Church tradition, the mission of Outreach Ministry is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others.
At its September meeting, Outreach Ministry voted to provide a grant of $500 to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund-Fire, specifically to support ministries and relief efforts in the fire impacted communities of Northern California.
The Outreach Ministry Team continues to provide support for the monthly dinner for The Gathering Inn guests on the second Wednesday of every month. During this time of COVID, the meals are prepared and delivered to St. John's Roseville and The Gathering Inn.
In addition, the Outreach Ministry Team prepares a meal for The Gathering Inn Auburn location. The Gathering Inn is the only homeless shelter in South Placer County and the only shelter that takes families.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to Outreach Ministry and continues to make these grants possible. If you are interested in joining our team, we meet on the first Sunday of the month. Presently that is on Zoom.
Our next meeting will be on Sunday, October 4th, at 3 p.m. Please contact Camille Grabowski at [email protected] or 916-409-5509.

St. Luc Episcopal School Thomassique, Haiti
Update!
|
|
Ever wondered what a six- room school might look like? This is a model of a school design used at Cerca la Source, Haiti, a neighbor to St.Luc School, our partner in Thomassique, Haiti.
Your St. Luc Committee at St. Augustine has been working to develop a plan to help build the school and more importantly an opportunity to help financially support the school feeding program and teacher salaries at the school.
Enrollment pre-COVID-19 had risen to close to 100 students. Then families were forced to leave the area due to employment and other reasons. Schools reopened August 17th to finish the remainder of last year. The new school year will begin in November.
Enrollment is currently close to 40 students as families are returning to the area. Pastor Guiliene was able to attract a new group of qualified teachers and has maintained them during the crisis.
The St. Luc Committee is working hard to plan an event to highlight the successes and challenges for St. Luc. It will all be an opportunity to better explain how you can play a vital role in partnering to bring education, nutrition and transformation to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
Stay tuned for dates and how to participate!

The St. James Food Pantry is open at the church in Lincoln, primarily serving people in that community. The number of families they support has risen in the past few months. They greatly appreciate our support.
Unlike some of the larger food cooperatives, the Pantry needs items packed in smaller containers. Here is a list of popular items: fruit cups, peanut butter (16 ounce), Mac n Cheese, cereals, canned tuna and chicken, pinto beans (small bags), rice and small boxes of pancake mix.
Please drop off your items in the shopping cart at the church. Jim Quinney will deliver the donations to St. James Pantry. Thank you for your generosity.

St. Vincent de Paul
Dining Room
|
|
|
A group of volunteers from St. Augustine Church regularly serves meals at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room the third Thursday of each month. They work from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., preparing, cooking and serving a warm meal for those in need. Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, St. Vincent de Paul has closed its kitchen for cooking and the dining room for eating. For now, the volunteers prepare the meals, place them in brown bags, and Supervisor John Mayne distributes the lunches.
On September 17th, the volunteers prepared bag lunches for the patrons, adding chips, trail mix and bottled water to the main meal in the brown bag. Volunteers Catherine Beckman, Deidre Shonk and John Redmond assembled the lunches. The Supervisor of St. Vincent de Paul, John Mayne, passed out the lunches at 11:30.
Our volunteers for the upcoming session on October 15th are Kathryn Jordan, Rob Shonk and Steve Broce.
Volunteers for St. Vincent de Paul include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Deidre and Rob Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Steve Broce and Kathryn Jordan.
Please contact Rob Shonk, if you are interested in working in this important ministry: [email protected] or 916-599-1218.

A couple of years ago, Sam Weston brought his dream of a Bear Ministry to St. Augustine. He envisioned us building bears, with special “blessed” hearts, to be given to youngsters in the hospital. He wanted them to have something to hold on to, something they could turn to when they were scared, hurting or just needed a friend. Well, many of us helped Sam build some bears. And they were welcomed and loved by their lucky recipients.
There is still an inventory of materials to build more bears. Sam is bringing this project back and is looking for some help with building them. He needs sewers, stuffers and hand stitchers.
Can you lend a hand???? If so, please contact Sam at:
He would be happy to fill you in on the details of how you can be of help.

Have you had a Popcorn Visit from Pastor Anny? She is so excited to be our new rector, but is disappointed she cannot meet you all in person.
Sooo....she has embarked on Popcorn Visits. Vestry members are driving Pastor Anny around to each St. Augustine home to ring the doorbell and meet you in person.
Be patient! This may take through the month of October. Many of the visits were cancelled due to the smoke and heat. But Pastor Anny will soon be ringing your doorbell to meet you and present you with a package of popcorn.
