Like every day...

The dogs and I were on our morning walk.

But on this day...

Something a little extra weird happened.

______

It was shortly after 7:00 a.m.

The morning air was still fresh and cool. I was on a mission to get our walk in with my two "best friends" before the suffocating 100-degree heat arrived.

As the dogs and I rounded one of the last corners heading home on our regular 35-minute route, I heard (and felt) a car slowly driving behind us. It seemed odd, and I turned cautious.

"What's up with that?" I thought.

I retracted the leashes, pulled the dogs in close to me...and kept walking.

______

We were on the left-hand sidewalk.

Finally, the car pulled even with us and up to our side of the road.

The car stopped.

The window rolled down.

The driver leaned out.

My first thought was that he was lost and needed directions.

______

But then...

With no smile or kindness in his eyes or voice, the driver asked:

"You couldn't find dogs bigger than that?"

I smiled and replied:

"I thought one big dog out of three was enough."

He blew a loud, airy "Pffff...!" in our direction.

______

I guess he didn't like my answer.

He didn't smile back.

He said nothing more.

His window rolled up.

He hit the gas.

His car zoomed off.

I had no idea what his intention had been, but the thought struck me:

"I think he was trolling me and my small dogs!"

______

Stuff happens every day.

Good stuff.

Bad stuff.

Serious stuff.

Silly stuff.

How we handle all of it is up to us.

______

And no matter the stuff that happens...

We always have a choice.

"How will I choose to live today?"

1. Will I live today irritated, frustrated, angry, loaded with negative energy... and share it back with the world?

2. Will I successfully process the bad, the tough, and the weird...and STILL make sure my words and actions shine positive energy back to others?

Again...

Our choice.

Despite the conversation.

Despite the unkindness.

Despite the unexpected.

Despite the disregard.

Despite the rejection.

Despite the event.

Despite the words.

And despite the troll who makes fun of small dogs.

😊

Never give your choice to have a good day back to the world.

EXTRA Thoughts on

Extra Mile Thursday...

Recently...

Hurricane Helene devastated the lives of thousands. But through all the terrible, two of my friends haven't lost their inspiring shine.

Brad and Libby Birky, the founders of the nationally recognized SAME Cafe in Denver, Colorado, now live in Englewood, Florida. They were hit hard by the brutal storm.

I heard from them.

Hey Shawn,

We have officially moved out of our home until we can get it fixed. It was under knee deep water and most everything that was touching the floor had to go (including the floor). We've spent the last few days cleaning out the house.

We are lucky! We are safe and our beloved animals are safe. We have a safe place to live.

We just keep reminding ourselves of your words:

1. Stop freaking out

2. Figure out a fix-it process

3. Don't stop taking steps!

Every day we keep taking little bites.

You can't eat a whale in one day.
