Caregivers carry a heavy burden as they struggle to balance their careers and the needs of their own families with the demands of caring for loved ones. Many of them experience serious health, financial, emotional and professional consequences. Complicating matters even further, caregiving is a totally different ecosystem, leaving caregivers floundering to navigate an overwhelming and fragmented system.

In this new blog, Michael Walsh, CEO of Cariloop discusses the complexities of caregiving and how employers can help relieve the anxiety of those who are caring for a loved one and working full time. Cariloop was the winner of The Action Group's Innovator's Showcase at the 2018 Annual Employer Leadership Summit.
Unique Mental Health Training Opportunity for Members

Action Group members have a unique and exciting opportunity to participate in a mental health training program at no cost. Mental Health First Aid at Work from the National Council of Behavioral Health will be available to all members of The Action Group's Mental Health Learning Network. There are six additional spots being held for members who are not Learning Network members.

This workplace mental health training program teaches participants how to notice and support an individual who may be experiencing a mental health or substance abuse concern or crisis and connect them with the appropriate employee resources.

The training is July 18, 2018, from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and we have reserved spots for Learning Network members; other Action Group members may contact Deb Krause (dkrause@mnhealthaction group.org) to register for one of the six remaining spots (first come, first served basis). Learn more here.

Industry Insights From Health Care Policy Expert

Allan Baumgarten, independent analyst and consultant

New competition will have the most impact on Medicare plans, but employer groups will also be affected. Profitability for Medicare, state and commercial health plans is (way) up. Consolidation among health plans and provider systems will continue. Capital investments in facilities will continue. There will be more performance-based payment for government plans, but less change for commercial plans.

These are just some of the insights shared by health care policy expert Allan Baumgarten at The Action Group's June member meeting, The Changing Landscape for Health Care in Minnesota: Data and Insights for Employers. Allan, an independent analyst and consultant whose work focuses on health care policy, finance and local market strategies, has made his slides from the meeting available in the Member Center on the homepage. Free Resources Help Employers Stop Diabetes in its Tracks
Prediabetes is real, it's common, it's reversible!

The Action Group website has new Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) employer resources available at no cost to members and non-members. The resources are the result of a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and The Action Group, and include descriptions of DPP vendors, a risk calculator, fact sheet, FAQs, glossary, and much more. To view, please click here  (select "National Diabetes Prevention Program" tile).

More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, and another 86 million have prediabetes, which comprises about 45 percent of the workforce, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Many employers are surprised to learn that this translates to one in three employees having prediabetes -- 90 percent of whom don't know it.

MDH and The Action Group encourage employers to help stop diabetes in its tracks by making the DPP a covered benefit for employees. This proven lifestyle change program can cut the risk of diabetes in half. The CDC also offers a Diabetes Prevention Impact Toolkit, designed for states, employers, and insurers. Please click here to learn more.

"As a country, we must put our health first, and that includes both mental and physical well-being. There is no health without mental health and there should be no health insurance without mental health coverage. We need the Administration to retain policies that prioritize people over profits. Cutting lifesaving treatments and health coverage for people with mental illness as a cost-saving measure should never be an option."
