A Message from Our NYC Chapter ChairEileenNote
Hi Members!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I expect to see at least some of you at the gym as we try to work off those extra pounds we all gained.

Now, with the Holiday Season upon us, we have begun the transition to cooler weather, and I am in my glory!  While many of you are either packing for your annual trek to Florida or dreaming of a Caribbean cruise, I feel energized - I move faster, work harder, and love to wander the streets of this glorious city.

Speaking of transitions, be sure to check out Amy Epstein's article below, describing her experience volunteering with the JCC's Women's Engage Group, and learning how uplifting volunteering can be.

Also, with winter approaching, walking conditions will soon become wetter, colder and more slippery, so you should find Sally Olds' article about how to avoid falling especially useful.  And watch for TTN's FallStop...MOVE STRONG event, which will be offered in April!

Finally, take a look at the valuable health tips provided about Sepsis and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) to learn how to recognize the symptoms and understand treatment options for both of these diseases.

I hope you all stay warm and safe, and don't forget to....

Have a Great Day!

You are reading my inaugural column in The Caring Times, which I was asked to write and illustrate with topics that draw on my own narrative of transitions.  They have included the transition trifecta of becoming a widow 7 years ago after a marriage of 41 years, moving from a brownstone in Brooklyn to an apartment on the Upper West Side and selling a company around the time of my husband's death which I had started 25 years before.

So, as far as transitions go, I get to wear the gold hat with a rhinestone "T".

My hope with this diary is to share some of my experiences, which may resonate with many of us trying to figure out how to age gracefully, not break a bone, keep our brains active, enjoy a rich social life, experience the delights of continuing to learn and challenge ourselves, discover new places and people, and, most importantly, to keep finding things to make us happy and fulfilled.

For my maiden column I'm going to narrate a current endeavor which is really about the pleasure of volunteering and giving ...   Read More

Could it be Sepsis?

Sepsis, or septicemia, occurs when the body has an extreme response to an infection. Without prompt treatment, organ failure can follow - but the early symptoms of sepsis are similar to many less catastrophic illnesses... Read More

 Could it be GERD?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach).

This can irritate the esophagus and cause heartburn and other symptoms... Read More

In my circle of friends, practically everyone - including me - has fallen within the last couple of years. One friend hit the floor when the chair she was standing on to reach a high cabinet tipped over. One tripped over a small rug in her apartment. One tumbled down stairs when, wearing her progressive lenses, she could not see the bottom of the staircase. One slipped and fell on her face on a marble floor, injuring her eye socket. I ended up spread-eagled on a sidewalk when, looking up at the marquee of the theater I was headed to, I caught my toe in a crack in the cement.

The ways we fall are as varied as we are - and the ways to prevent falls are also varied, as we acknowledge and compensate for changes in vision, balance, muscular strength, and other abilities we've always taken for granted.  Fortunately, we can change our ways and do a lot to prevent falling.  "Reaching your sixties should be a wake-up call...   Read More

 Neighborhood Group NotesNGs
Neighborhood Groups continue to grow and be one of the most important parts of the Caring Collaborative. At our meetings we share and learn from each other about topics that contribute to our well-being. Read what Neighborhood Groups have been talking about and see if there's a topic that would work well for your group, too. Read More
