Continuing Education for IRC Coaches

junior mens pair_brady and boaz_2012  Stephen Eckstein (far right in picture), is the IRC Junior Mens Varsity rowing coach.  Stephen began rowing in 2006 at Purdue.  After sustaining an injury his Junior year, he returned the following year as the Novice Men's Assistant Coach.  After graduation, Stephen began coaching at IRC as the Novice Men's Coach and after one year moved up to the Varsity Men's Coach.  Stephen attended the Joy of Sculling Conference in Saratoga Springs, NY on Dec. 8-9.  This conference is put on by Jim Joy and is the premier rowing coaches conference in the United States.  We look forward to Stephen applying his newly acquired knowledge to the IRC Junior Varsity Men's Program!  Stephen was able to attend the conference due to a grant from the Indiana Youth Institute - Thank you IYI!

2011 clubnationals Jackie Kleinhans (second from left), is the IRC Junior Women's Varsity rowing coach and the Head Coach of the IRC Junior Program.  Jackie began rowing at the University of New Hampshire in 2005 and then transferred to the University of Cincinnati in 2006 where she rowed a year.  While in school, she began coaching at the Great Miami Rowing Center.  Jackie began at IRC in August of 2010 and has been the Program Director/Head Junior Coach for over 2 years.  Jackie has attended the Joy of Sculling Conference in the past and has found the information relative and useful.  She will be attending again in February at the San Francisco, CA conference.

A successful organization relies upon those associated with it for both volunteer support as well as financial support. Dues alone do not cover all of the operational costs for IRC, nor does it cover facility and equipment improvements.  IRC also covers partial costs of it's Outreach expenses and Scholarships - most of these expenses are funded through donations.

You can make your tax deductible donation on-line by following this link.

These are exciting times at The Indianapolis Rowing Center. IRC will be embarking on one of our most ambitious regatta schedules ever.  To prepare for these regattas, there will be countless volunteer hours invested as well as substantial repairs and upgrades required to our course and facilities. IRC has an illustrious past and we have the opportunity to have an even brighter future! To accomplish our goal of becoming a world class organization we NEED YOUR HELP!

IRC's future is bright - we invite you to share in it! Thank you for your consideration and continued support.

Sincerely,

Bill Daugherty

Winter has officially begun in Indianapolis, which means the Masters' team has begun their winter training to prepare for the Spring racing season. Three days a week, the Masters rowers and coaches Caitlin Gray and Courtney Chan are working hard to fine tune the team's rowing techniques and to increase overall conditioning both on the ergs (rowing machines) and through a variety of strength and mobility exercises. At practices, there are lines of athletes on ergs, each striving to achieve personal and team goals. Winter conditioning is the key to success for the upcoming Spring season. Each rower and the coaches know that they must train hard in order to win future races and to improve upon the team's past successes. The initial improvements in ability and endurance will be tested at the upcoming day-long Indianapolis Indoor Rowing Championships on January 26 in the Blackwell Building at the International School. Beginning at 9:00am, rowers will compete in a 2,000-meter row on the rowing machines; the team relay events begin at 2:30pm. If you have ever been curious about winter training, this is a terrific event to attend and watch the competition among athletes of all ages and levels of rowing experience, or come participate in the races as well, with novices and beginners racing 1000 meters.

Winter is still in full swing and our reservoir is dotted with ice.  Every year at this time I find myself trying to engineer a rowing shell that works on frozen ground. Alas, I have not come up with this yet, but I will keep you posted if I ever do.

We do, however, have the erg at least. Using the erg machine is a great way to maintain your fitness (and even increase it!) during the winter months when you can't be on the water. Training can be tough, and there are many ways to motivate yourself to stay focused over the winter. One of my favorites are the Concept 2 challenges. If you find yourself not keeping your New Year's Resolution, check out the C2 challenges page

I hope you all had a great holiday and a happy new year!
