This month we begin the Lenten season. Let us prepare our hearts and respond generously to God's call to deeper union with Him through prayer, penance, and good works. "Grant, O Lord, to Thy faithful people, that they may undertake with fitting piety this period of fasting, and complete it with steadfast devotion."

Campus Ministry

As February is Black History Month, we have the opportunity to highlight the contributions of Black Catholics to the Catholic Church. Each week this month we are honoring a black Catholic who lived in the United States.

This week we honor Henriette Delille, an African-American woman from New Orleans who is in the process of becoming a canonized Saint in the Catholic Church.

Henriette was born in 1812 as a free woman of color in New Orleans, LA. Early in her adult life, she felt called by God to devote herself to caring for and educating the poor. While religious orders at this time excluded people of color to their orders, she found support from local Catholic leaders to found a religious order for lay women of color and gave it the name Sisters of the Holy Family. Her order was full of courageous women who embraced lives of sacrifice for their neighbor, regardless of color. While Henriette died in 1862 of tuberculosis, God used her to start a beautiful movement in the Catholic Church, as her religious order of sisters educated over 4,000 pupils in 17 schools across Louisiana, Florida, and Texas, and had as many as 400 sisters in 1950.

Henriette Deilille was named a “venerable” by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, which means that Rome recognizes that this woman led a life of heroic virtue. Praise God for a woman who embraced a humble, courageous, hidden life of sacrifice for the poor! If you would like to learn more about her life, click here. Venerable Henriette Delille, pray for us!
