Join our Heartwalk team dedicated to Kelly High
Sadly, on July 9, the FCBA lost a close friend and colleague, Kelly High. Many FCBA members knew Kelly well from her work as a paralegal in the Public Defender's Office. For several years, Kelly participated on the YLD Heartwalk team and helped raise funds for the American Heart Association. Since 2007, the YLD teams have raised over $10,000, and Kelly was an essential part of the team over the years.
This year, the YLD Heartwalk team will be dedicated to Kelly. The YLD invites all FCBA members to make a contribution to the American Heart Association in Kelly's memory and to walk with us at the annual Mason Dixon Heartwalk. For donations, please CLICK HERE or send a check payable to the American Heart Association to Tony Cosentino at 330 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg. For any interested walkers, please join us on September 24 at 12:30pm at Antrim Township Community Park, 12315 Grant Shook Road in Greencastle.
You can register online to join our team by CLICKING HERE and selecting "Join a Team". In the next window you can select "Franklin County Bar Association Young Professionals Division" from the drop down and click search for your team. Join our team and complete the registration process. We would love to have you walk with us on Sunday, September 24th!

Doctors vs Lawyers Football will raise money for CASD
The Doctor Lawyer Football Classic is back! The flag football contest is scheduled for September 9, 2017 to be played under the lights at Trojan Stadium in Chambersburg. This promises to be a great time for all - players and spectators alike. The Trojan Band and cheerleaders may even make appearances!
It looks like each team will have 7 players on the field. We want lots of players! If you are interested in playing, please get in touch with me and let me know your shirt size. All participants will get a beautiful t shirt with the lawyers logo on the front and a number on the back. The shirts are free!!! However - here's the catch- the game is the centerpiece in raising funds for student athletes who find themselves in the era of "pay to play" (students must pay a fee to participate in inter-scholastic sports). To show our solidarity with the student athletes, all participants in the Doctor/Lawyer Football Classic are being asked to contribute $50 - our own version of "pay to play". Trust me - the beautiful T shirts, soon to become collector's items, will be worth more than the $50 investment when you include the great memories you will have of the evening. Even if you would prefer not to play but want to be on the sidelines cheering on your colleagues, sign up and get a shirt!
If you want to participate (and who wouldn't!) please contact me as soon as possible so we can place the shirt order. This is going to be awesome!

Community Announcement:
DOCTOR /LAWYER GRIDIRON CLASSIC SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th, 2017
7PM @ TROJAN STADIUM
In the early 1980's, Franklin County doctors and lawyers, good friends and rivals, clashed on the gridiron for charity. The game was officially dubbed "The Pro Bono Bowl" and received statewide coverage in the Pennsylvania Law Journal. Now, in 2017, with "Pay to Play" in place for high school sports, and every athlete's family paying a participation fee to compete, Franklin County doctors and lawyers will pay $50 each to play and take the field for the benefit of our school athletic programs. On Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 7PM, our community professionals will square off in a flag football game under the lights at the CASHS Trojan Stadium in Chambersburg.

"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.
I realized I'd found some new attorneys at the prosecution side of the court house on the Fourth floor. After reflection, I thought I'd visit Ian Brink's office on the defense side of the court house, looking for newbies, as it had been a while since I'd rung the bell at the window.
[Interesting note, at the DA's office the 'teller' window looks directly over three staff desks. There's no way for attorneys or staff to move between many of the cubicles or offices without being seen. On the other hand, at the PD's office, the window is offset. If no one is at the desk at the window, it might be some time before a person is noticed but for the bell].
I asked to see Ian. He came out to retrieve me promptly. I'd chosen a good day. Walking behind him to his office, I asked how he was. Ian replied: "I'm hanging in there." Perfect, I thought, for a Public Defender. Ian was quick to point out that he'd sacrificed for me last year and urged me to try some of the others.
I met with Casey S. Bogner, Esq., who started at the Public Defender's office in December, 2014. Casey is the First Assistant Public Defender. Casey graduated from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2011, with a combined degree in criminology and sociology. She then headed to Penn State University School of Law, University Park, where she earned her juris doctorate in 2014. She's living in Carlisle now.
Casey lives with her two puggles, Buster and Bailey. (Pug dog met a poodle). She told me it was a good thing that her boyfriend, James Ghafoori, is in the restaurant business, because Casey doesn't cook. She loves to travel, visiting her mother in Manhattan and her father in Wyoming, but her favorite is Cancun.
I've previously written about a conversation with Shannon E. Barnett, Esq., back in October, 2016. Shannon has a German Shepherd, Heidi. She acknowledged providing birthday cakes for her dogs. I also could not help notice the identical paintings on both Casey and Shannon's walls as they've taken seriously the painting parties currently popular. (Someone came up with the idea of an art class where alcohol could be purchased).
In addition to her work in the Public Defender's Office, Shannon does conflict work for juvenile defendants. When I asked about the apparent similarity, Shannon was quick to point out that the juvenile system has a different primary goal than the criminal justice system, rehabilitation rather than punishment. By the way, Shannon's dating Keith Foose, Jodi's son.
Brian W. Mains, Esq., was located in the next office. He graduated from Nazareth High School in 1998. He then went on a mission trip to Sardinia and Italy. Brian is fluent in Italian. After completing his mission work, he enrolled in Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

| Ian Brink and Brian Mains at the 2016 Admissions Ceremony |
Brian graduated with a degree in psychology from BYU, a wife, Christine, and possibly a child on the way in 2004. Brian spoke warmly about his mentor, a professor who had appeared as an expert witness in brain trauma in several law suits. After graduation, instead of brain psychology, Brian went to work dealing with contracts for an automotive parts supplier. Brian entered Penn State Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle in 2010. Securing his JD In 2013, Brian initially worked in Harrisburg, actively pursuing business litigation.
Early in 2016, Brian began his solo practice in Carlisle, but heard from Tom Place about an opening in the Franklin County Public Defender's Office.
Three of Brian's four boys are active in cross country, Thomas, age 13, Sean, age 12 and Isaac, age 12. Owen, age 9, will probably join them. When not chasing runners, Brian is active in his church's teenage youth group. He also sees that his kids participate in two separate soccer teams, basketball, football and baseball. Brian himself is a dedicated skier and snow boarder. I was tired just thinking about the transportation.
Another young attorney in Ian's office is Jonathan C. Faust, Esq. Jonathan is a local, having graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 2004. After graduation, Jon attended Harrisburg Area Community College in Gettysburg, while he worked full time. His first job was at the Bass store in the Gettysburg outlets. Jon is also a veteran of Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc., as on 'on line' employee.

| Ian Brink and Jonathan Faust at the 2016 Admissions Ceremony |
Jon graduated from Cornell in 2010 with a degree in applied economic management. From there he headed to Carlisle to Penn State Dickinson School of Law, graduating with his JD in 2013. After graduation he secured employment in the Lebanon County District Attorney's office. But, Jon and his wife, Janet, a graduate of Waynesboro High School, wanted to return to Franklin County. Jon elected to go to the other side.
Janet is a Shippensburg University graduate with a degree in business. She's employed in the offices of the Fairfield Inn. The Fausts have two girls, Charlotte "Charlie", age 4, and Eleanor "Elli", age 2. The Fausts are also cat lovers, having a fisty Felton, age 6. So, there's the dog lovers on one side of the office and the cat lovers on the other side.
When I was interviewing the attorneys in the Public Defender's Office, I asked Casey who assigned cases to the different attorneys. She immediately answered "Kelly". As I was leaving, Kelly High came bursting through the office with that glowing smile she always bestowed. Kelly worked for me some twenty-one years ago as an intern while studying to be a paralegal at Hagerstown Business College. At that time, she was filling in for one of my staff on maternity leave. Although I did not hire Kelly, she remained a presence and a friend over the years. Her message was always positive, always warm, always cheerful. Kelly was a ray of sunshine that brightened our days.
*** Correction from July's Column - Annie Gomez Shockey interviewed Barb and wrote the article last month. ***
