2017 Pro Bono Award Winner

The FCBA celebrated the services of attorneys who donate their time providing civil legal services to low income individuals and families in Franklin County on Thursday, October 12, 2017. The FCBA Pro Bono luncheon was held at the Main Street Deli & Café in Chambersburg.

This year's luncheon honored Martha Walker, of Walker, Connor & Spang, LLC, with the 2017 Pennsylvania Bar Association Pro Bono Award. David Trevaskis, the Pro Bono Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Bar Association, noted that "Marty took on complicated, time-consuming cases that normally would not have had pro bono assistance. Marty's impact to those she helped is immeasurable. It is because of attorneys like Marty, and their commitment to our community, that Franklin County has a wonderful reputation for pro bono work." Mr. Trevaskis also commended the splendid coordination between the three agencies in Franklin County that offer pro bono services. Franklin County Legal Services, MidPenn Legal Services and the Law Offices of Women in Need work together to provide much needed legal assistance to our community.

Nicole Sipe, Franklin County Bar Association board member and managing attorney of MidPenn Legal Services welcomed area attorneys and thanked them for their service. "The Franklin County Bar Association is proud of its members for providing pro bono services to our local community and making such an impact.  This year we are especially appreciative of Marty Walker.  I wanted to elaborate and share that Marty has handled sixteen divorce cases and one child support case with fifteen of those divorces including property.  These are amazing numbers as it is difficult to find attorneys who can take a pro bono divorce case with property involved, much less fifteen. Marty is setting a great example for the rest of the Bar."

Janice Hawbaker, chair of the Franklin County Bar Association's Pro Bono Committee thanked the attorneys and staff members who work for legal service agencies in Franklin County, along with the various members of the FCBA who provide pro bono services. She stated the number of attorneys who volunteered increased to 45, up from 2016's 41. The cases accepted by private attorneys were 106, up from 76 last year. Wills, power of attorneys, living wills, simple divorce, divorce with property issues, pro se divorce assistance, bankruptcy, protection from abuse, support, custody, civil lawsuit defense, and adult guardianship were the types of cases FCBA members volunteered to handle over the last 12 months.

Attorneys at the luncheon also heard from the Honorable Shawn D. Meyers who spoke about the importance of pro bono work and expressed the gratitude of the Bench for the pro bono volunteers. Deborah Dresser Neiderer, managing attorney of the Law Offices of WIN, thanked the attorneys on behalf of Women in Need.

The yearly luncheon is held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Bar Association Pro Bono Week. This week is an opportunity to highlight the difference lawyers make in their communities and to acknowledge the partnerships that form the basis for many successful pro bono efforts.

Here are some pictures of our luncheon attendees.

157 Lincoln Way East
Chambersburg, PA 17201

Program
The FCBA and Court Administration will host a Lunch & Learn RE: Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania: Case Records of the Appellate and Trial Courts.
The Supreme Court approved a new public access policy for case records filed in and maintained by the appellate and trial courts.  The policy's adoption marks the Court's continued commitment to making court records open and accessible to the public while safeguarding sensitive, private information contained in those records. The policy becomes effective January 6, 2018.
The policy places the responsibility upon litigants and attorneys to safeguard confidential information in the documents they file with the courts; litigants and attorneys will need to comply with Sections 7.0 and 8.0. The policy provides that a court or custodian is not required to review any filed document for compliance .
The Lunch/Learn will provide an opportunity for discussion as to how this policy will be implemented in the 39th Judicial District.

The PBA Family Law Section is hosting its Winter Meeting from January 11-14, 2018 at the Roosevelt in New Orleans, Louisiana. Each year, they conduct two state-wide conferences, which are attended by family law attorneys from throughout Pennsylvania.

The Winter Meeting offers up to 9 hours of CLE credit, including ethics, course materials, breakfasts each day, and two cocktail receptions. In addition to the excellent CLE that our Section provides, it is a wonderful opportunity for attendees to interact with colleagues and judges and establish lifetime friendships with other professionals also dedicated to the practice of family law.

The Section has a membership initiative to encourage and promote the attendance of family law attorneys who are - {a) new to the practice of family law, {b) from solo or small firms, (c) employed by a government agency, or (d) from counties that have been under-represented at our meetings in the past. To that end, they have created a Scholarship program to assist family law attorneys, who meet one of these criteria, in attending our meetings.

If you are not already a PBA Family Section member, you may be eligible to receive FREE membership for the year, as you will need to be a member to apply for this scholarship.
Eligible applicants interested in attending may apply by completing the application and
forwarding that, along with their CV, to Pam Kance at Pam.Kance@pabar.org. The deadline to receive applications is November 17, 2017.
