Basic insurance knowledge key with students back on campus

Now that college students have returned for the fall semester, I’m reminded of a survey I read about a year ago regarding young adults’ grasp of basic insurance.

The survey, conducted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, found that many in Generation Z did not understand basic insurance terms, such as “copays” and “deductibles.”

Be smart when protecting your car from break-ins

Recent spikes in vehicle break-ins across North Carolina—from small towns to big cities—are a reminder that no community is immune. A few simple precautions, like locking your car, removing valuables, and parking in well-lit areas, can help protect your property. Make sure you have the right insurance coverage, and remember: prevention is the best protection. (video)

Here’s an opportunity to get a grant for a new, stronger roof

I recently joined Sunset Beach Mayor Shannon Phillips and NCIUA CEO Gina Hardy to announce a $20 million grant program that helps coastal homeowners install IBHS-certified fortified roofs. Eligible NCIUA policyholders can receive up to $6,000 in most coastal areas and up to $10,000 on the Outer Banks and barrier islands. These roofs are independently verified, can reduce insurance premiums, and have been proven to significantly lower both the frequency and severity of storm damage. Funding is first-come, first-served for policyholders in 19 coastal counties.
