The Census is Coming!
To start getting ready for the Census, check out the MHLS Get Out the Count Timeline, https://bit.ly/308dGO9 which includes images, videos, captions, articles, program ideas, outreach and engagement suggestions and technology recommendations to help libraries organize their efforts to get the word out about the Census and prepare for and support people completing the Census.

In 2020, the ten question Census will be largely digital for the first time , and there are a lot of communities and populations that stand to be left out of the count including traditionally hard-to-count populations like children, New Americans, and people with limited access to internet and limited experience with technology. As trusted organizations in their community, libraries can help ensure a complete count by partnering with Community Based Organizations, local governments, and anyone interested in getting the word out about the Census to make sure people understand how important it is to complete their questionnaire. Libraries can also provide support as tech hubs to help people complete their Census questionnaires. For a sneak peek at what completing the online form will look like please visit https://youtu.be/fXg1_1HHKzA

As part of the New York Community Trust Census Equity Fund grant program, Library Sustainability Coordinator, Casey Conlin will be presenting workshops in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam, Ulster and counties, as well as a webinar that will provide an overview of the upcoming Census, tools and strategies for promoting the Census, and best practices for supporting community members in completing the Census questionnaire.

The Friends of the Pleasant Valley Free Library were awarded a Friends of Libraries Section's 2019 Daniel W. Casey Library Advocacy Certificate of Merit
in commendation of their diligent response to the devastating fire that closed the library from November 6, 2018 until February 11, 2019. The Friends of the Pleasant Valley Free Library raised over $30,000 in 2019 through book sales, Mahjong tournaments, and community fundraisers. They sorted through thousands of donated materials to help restore the library collection which grew from less than 5,000 items after the fire to over 28,500 items at the end of 2019. The Daniel W. Casey Library Advocacy Award, sponsored by the Friends of Libraries Section of NYLA, honors a volunteer member or a group from the library community whose efforts have contributed to the growth of libraries or Friends of the Library organizations.
