My Dear Central Family,
Pastor Angela Johnson, through and with the LIFE Group, has developed Humanity in Action, which is in ministry with the LIFE group, young adults from Metro Atlanta, and Atlanta Police recruits. This is part of her ordination requirements for a Fruitfulness Project.
The goal of Humanity in Action is to create space for Atlanta Police Academy recruits and young adults in the Black community (specifically, but not limited to, young adults of Central United Methodist Church and the surrounding community) to see the humanity in each other. The hope is that by building meaningful relationships, members of each group will see beyond the polarizing stereotypes and begin to dismantle the “us vs. them” narrative.
Police brutality attends much too often to Black populations and communities. Pastor Johnson reminds us: “In our Baptismal vows as United Methodists, we promise to resist evil in any form it may present itself. While this problem - this evil - is huge, with God’s direction we can chip away at it. Micah 6:8 tells us we are to “to do justice, and to love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” (NRSV). Centering in Christ calls us to do justice, love kindness and to walk in deep commitment to God. This Humanity in Action project is another way we witness to that.
Your giving, your faithfulness to Christ helps make space for this, another space for young adult presence and faithfulness in ministry at Central. I am so proud of you for making this project possible. Thank you, Central. Thank you!
Take good care, keep the faith, be safe and, as always,
Be Well!
Pastor Ross
