ANNOUNCING THE CENTRE FOR GLOBAL INCLUSION
VALUES STATEMENT

Please read The Centre for Global Inclusion Values Statement posted on our website,  here .

We say, “To create a better world and improve organizational performance, we value:

  • Diversity & Inclusion
  • Integrity, Equity, and Responsibility
  • The 5 P’s of Sustainability – People, Planet, Peace, Prosperity, and Partnership"

We define each of the above values, discuss clashing values, and then describe the values basis of the Global D&I Benchmarks (GDIB).

Our values statement is guiding our thinking about the action taken by the Forum on Workplace Inclusion and the University of St. Thomas regarding Planned Parenthood. The BoD is still in the process of determining what actions it will take. We will announce those actions in next month’s newsletter or before in a separate communication to our readers. As we described in our 19 September newsletter editorial (where we encourage you to scroll down and leave your comments and feedback ), it is important that we stand up for our values and do so with care and concern for all individuals and organizations involved.

UNTIL IT HAPPENED TO ME:
RETURNING TO THE WORKFORCE AFTER A CAREER BREAK HOW ORGANIZATIONS CAN TAP
INTO THIS OPPORTUNITY
Article by: Cathy Leonard, Diversity & Inclusion Consultant,
Cathy Leonard Consulting, St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador , Canada
Ten years ago, I accepted my dream job as Diversity Manager for a large national company. As I transitioned into the role, I read Sylvia Ann Hewlett’s book  On Ramps and Off Ramps and I vividly recall its impact on me.

  • I read: 93% of highly qualified women who left the workforce wanted to return and on average they took only 2.2 years out of the workforce.
  • I thoughtThat’s quite a high percentage who want to return … and over the course of a career two years out of the workforce years is a drop in the bucket – great news!
  • I read on: Only 74% manage to return and among them only 40% to full-time mainstream jobs; on average they lose 18% of their earning power, a penalty which becomes more severe the longer they are out.
  • And I thoughtHow could the impact be that severe?  It didn’t seem logical; it didn’t seem right.

Although I integrated this information into my work, I did not truly understand how a return could be so difficult, and how a gap could be so damaging. Until it happened to me.
FREEDOM SCHOOLS: A FRESH APPROACH TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Article by: GDIB Expert Panelist, Kristal Moore Clemons,
Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, Virginia State University, Virginia, USA
The  CDF Freedom Schools  program is a six-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program designed to serve children and youth in grades K–12 in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is either limited, too expensive, or non-existent. The program enhances children’s motivation to read, thus, encouraging their excitement about learning.

By partnering with schools, faith and community-based organizations, municipalities, colleges, universities, and juvenile detention facilities, The  CDF Freedom Schools  are able to offer their programs in these communities at no-cost Additionally, the program connects families to the right resources in their communities.

GDIB Expert Panelist,  Kristal Moore Clemons  recalls her experience with the CDF Freedom Schools.

NEW RELEASE!
SAFE ENOUGH TO SOAR: ACCELERATING TRUST, INCLUSION & COLLABORATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Best-selling authors and renowned organizational consultants Fred Miller and GDIB Expert Panelist, Judith Katz announce the publication of their newest book. Written in plain, everyday language,  Safe Enough to Soar: Accelerating Trust, Inclusion, and Collaboration in the Workplace  identifies the default mindsets and behaviors that create hostile work environments and block collaboration, engagement, and partnership. The book , published by The Centre Alliance partner Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc., provides a simple, step-by-step process that will enable an organization's individuals, work-groups, and teams to move past the dysfunctional mire of defensiveness, micro-aggressions, cover-your-ass compromises, and judging; and launch them into the innovation-inspiring, collaboration-fostering zone of organizational bravery.
