"To know Christ and to make Him known . . . "
The Weekly Sunday Bulletin of St. John’s Episcopal Church
This week’s Gospel reading contains one of the most famous of Christian imperatives, “take up our cross and follow him.” The snippet from Paul also contains a list of imperatives. Our love is to be genuine, hate what is evil, give good hospitality, bless those who persecute us, be humble in thought and, what seems like an impossible task nowadays, live in harmony with one another. Human nature is so complex and much psychologized these days, that it never seems to remind us how broken we are. One of the great hypocrisies of modern Christian life is the downplaying of the sinfulness of our human nature while also thinking that science and what is so fashionably called “progress” will save us from our ills. But Christian faith rests in the knowledge that Jesus Christ has completed the work of reconciling God’s love and grace to us, which is sufficient to get us through all our ills.
Of course, I don’t mean to sound like praying can simply heal us physically! Much of modern medicine and technology is well and good (though not above critique and miracles do happen), but at the core of who we are, as both spiritual and physical beings, we need both spiritual and physical help. Christians offer the world in the fullest way both, by offering the Gospel to the world. God is using us to help the world learn how to love, care, and seek truth. We cannot do these things on our own; we need God’s help. The self-denial that Jesus calls for is the sacrifice that we proclaim: not our own way, Lord, not our own will, which will always be imperfect, but thy will, which is always perfect. Everyone’s “cross” will look different, but it is the same in that we are allowing ourselves to be led by God and His will for us and for the world. But the world, in its imperfection and self-interestedness, does not like this and may well persecute us for it but we keep on loving like Christ loves us.
Yours in Christ,
Deacon Zach

Please join us for a safe and loving offering of prayer and healing on Thursday, September 7th at 7:00 pm.
We believe that not only does Jesus still heal today, but that healing is one of the most powerful ministries of evangelization. Jesus never preached the Gospel of the kingdom of God without demonstrating the kingdom through signs, wonders, and miracles, with healing as the most frequent demonstration of God’s love.
Healing services at St. John’s will include a time of worship and praise, proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, corporate prayer for healing ending with individual prayer teams for healing. Come prepared for breakthrough!
| |
Our next Open Doors will be on Sunday, September 10th. The church will be open for prayer and quiet contemplation from 2 to 4 pm with musical offerings at 3 pm.
We welcome The Spiritlifters, a contemporary Christian band, let by Mike Tomek who played at our Harvest Fair last year.
Check St. John’s website for the most current music schedule.

CALLING ALL FUTURE ACOLYTES
In the meantime, the boy Samuel continued to serve the Lord, wearing a sacred linen apron. Each year his mother would make a little robe and take it to him when she accompanied her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice... The boy Samuel grew up in the service of the Lord.” 1 Samuel 2:18-21
“Acolyte” means an attendant or follower and Samuel is one of the first examples of an assistant to a priest. Your job as an acolyte is to assist the priest in charge of a worship service and enhance the worship service to help glorify God. You are a minister of the church who is called to serve God.
The Ministry of Acolyte offers a valuable contribution to the worship experience for our services at St. John’s. Acolytes are part of the worship team – the clergy, choir and musicians, Eucharistic ministers, and readers-- who together with the entire congregation join in worshiping God. Together we hear and receive God’s word and Sacraments.
Please contact Fr. Duncan, Deacon Zach or Deacon Claire if you are interested in providing this wonderful service. If we have enough volunteers, we will set up a regular schedule.
Please note: This qualifies for community service!!!!
