October is National Physical Therapy Month
Tidewater Physical Therapy Rehabilitation and Associates P.A., is supporting National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM), by promoting the message that in some instances physical therapy is a safe and effective alternative to opioids for long-term pain management.
NPTM, led by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), is a nationally recognized month of awareness each October that educates the public on the benefits of physical therapy. This special month of awareness has become so popular that the APTA dedicates a special messaging campaign every year under the umbrella of NPTM. Komen Maryland very personally. Too many of our customers, friends and-yes-our staff have had to do battle with breast cancer and I want to put my own resources behind Komen's effort to find a cure.
I hope you'll find the time to join Lori Yates, Komen's Community Health Manager for the Eastern Shore & Southern Maryland, and me on Friday October 7th for an event that will celebrate the survivors among us and raise money to fund services for our friends on the Shore who are still struggling with this disease.
Here's the plan. From 5:30pm to 7:30pm on October 7th we'll throw open the doors and welcome all comers to shop for the cause. As is our custom, Bountiful will donate 20% of all of the evening's sales to Komen Maryland.

Hard-Boiled Anxiety: The Freudian Desires of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler,
Ross Macdonald, and Their Detectives
Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
For close to fifty years, three masters of the hard-boiled detective novel dispatched intrepid gumshoes into upper-crust homes and seedy back alleys, peeling back and exposing all the pretexts of polite society. Or did they? Were there even closer, darker secrets they never quite copped to, or understood?
In Hard-Boiled Anxiety, Karen Huston Karydes offers a new and unsettling reading of the classic pairings of Dashiell Hammett and his successive shamuses, the Continental Op, Sam Spade, and Nick Charles; Raymond Chandler and his brooding knight errant, Philip Marlowe; and Ross Macdonald and his 1960s sleuth, Lew Archer.
Karen Huston Karydes had a twenty-four-year career at the Arlington County, Virginia Department of Libraries, focusing on adult acquisitions and reference. She then ran the library for inmates inside the Arlington County Detention Center for five years. At sixty, she pursued her interest in literary biography by entering the University of Maryland's Ph.D. program in English Language and Literature. After receiving her degree in 2010, she returned to full-time public library work and is now the Acquisitions Librarian for the Talbot County Free Library in Maryland. All library programs are free and open to the public.

Christmas in St. Michaels Announces
2016 Gingerbread Competition and Demo
Christmas in St. Michaels has announced the rules for its 2016 Gingerbread Competition and details about its demonstration on how to create an entry for the competition. The rules have been changed this year to allow any type of gingerbread creation.
Alice Petizon, chair of the Gingerbread Competition committee, explained: "Over the years, people have submitted some lovely entries that were not houses, and the judges faced a dilemma because the rules specified that entries had to be "houses." We anticipate that most entries will be houses of some sort, but changing the rules allows for other types of creations."
A free demonstration of techniques used in making a gingerbread creation will be held on Saturday, November 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library, 106 Fremont Street. Experienced bakers and past participants in gingerbread competitions will conduct the session. Recipes, a listing of helpful hints and a flyer explaining contest categories, cash prizes and rules will be distributed. In addition, the library will feature a display of books on gingerbread structures. For complete information about the Gingerbread Competition, visit christmasinstmichaels.org.

Easton Economic Development Corporation awarded USDA grant to support Chesapeake Harvest
The
Easton Economic Development Corporation
(EEDC) was awarded $383,673.00 from USDA from its
Local Food Promotion Program
(LFPP) for the implementation of "Chesapeake Harvest: Connecting Farmers to Markets" program. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced more than $56 million in grants this week to strengthen local and regional food systems, support farmers markets, and fund organic research, including the LFPP grant for the Easton Economic Development Corporation. "Since this Administration launched the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative in 2009 to coordinate USDA efforts to support local and regional food systems, there has been a dramatic increase in consumer demand for buying local," said Vilsack. "Over the years, we've seen how these new market opportunities are helping to drive job growth in agriculture, increase entrepreneurship in rural communities, and expand food access and choice. This latest round of grants will expand the capacity of farmers and businesses to serve this growing market, help revitalize local economies around the country, and support efforts around the country to provide fresh, healthy food to all Americans."
