Leap day means an extra day to be kind, help others

2020 is not a common year, it’s what is commonly known as a leap year.

While we’re synchronizing the calendar, let’s put that extra day to good use. The Chillicothe-Ross Chamber of Commerce would like to join the Leap of Kindness movement by observing one on Leap day 2020, Feb. 29.

Leap of Kindness Day was created in 2016 by the Saratoga (N.Y.) Chamber of Commerce and several Chambers across the country joined the movement to spread kindness across their community. In short, Leap of Kindness is meant to inspire and facilitate everyone doing something for someone else.

On the first Leap of Kindness Day, 50 Chambers in 30 states had thousands of people take part by cooking a meal for our first responders, collecting essential items for non-profits, doing canned food drives for food pantries, or something as simple as having students write a thank you card to someone they love.

So, what will you do with an extra day on Feb. 29? We’re inviting you to jump on the train and bring some light into lives across our community. So, what can you do?

Let's get Chillicothe a hometown makeover
The Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Chillicothe, Greater Chillicothe and Ross County Development, and the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau are banding together to help mobilize the effort.

HGTV is accepting nominations for Home Town Takeover, a limited series that will star Erin and Ben Napier, and document their efforts to renovate an entire town, from single-family homes to public parks and everywhere in between.

We are looking for anyone and everyone to submit their favorite projects with the hopes that the more submissions the producers see, the more they know the commitment and drive to make Chillicothe a better place.

Leaders are asking the public to submit their favorite project at HGTVHomeTownTakeover.com before Friday, Feb. 7, which is the deadline for submissions.

Videos of the project chosen are strongly encouraged, and photos help your story as well. For those who haven’t seen the show, the new season of Home Town starts Monday, Jan. 20 on HGTV.
NEWS AND NOTES
RANDOM IS RANDOM: The educational video above is from our friends at Working Partners. Random drug testing doesn't involve pulling names out of a fishbowl. Find out what steps to take with your drug testing vendor to make sure your random drug testing is truly random. PETLAND CLIMBING: Chillicothe-based Petland is once again ranked among the top franchises in the United States, but this time there's a twist - or more accurately, a climb. Petland jumped 50 places to 118th overall in the Entrepreneur Magazine Annual Franchise 500. According to World Franchising Network, there are more than 4,500 active franchisors in North America.

2020 BALLOTS SET: With less than two months before the 2020 primary (Tuesday, March 17), the ballots are set for the races. Click here to see the Ross County candidates , and click here for all Statehouse races (which include both of Ross County's state representatives).

DO YOU NEED HR HELP? The role of Human Resources management, even in small businesses, is crucial. A special webinar Wednesday from our partners at strategicHR might help you understand HR's role in your business and offer some solutions. Click here for more information and registration.

LYNCH BUILDING STILL IN LIMBO: It appears the Design Review Board decision on allowing the demolition of the former Lynch building will happen within the next month. Last week's meeting drew a crowd of passionate supporters and a letter from the Ross Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau in support of preserving the building. LCNB would like the DRB to vote on its submitted plan, rather than amend it (as we previously reported they were interested in doing) to include saving the facade. The board has 90 days from the Nov. 14 public meeting about the project to decide, so time is of the essence.
