Urgent Need for O Negative Blood at Cape Cod Hospital
(Hyannis, July 8, 2026) The Cape Cod Hospital Blood Bank is in urgent need of O Negative blood donors. While all blood types are needed on a regular basis, there is currently a shortage of O Negative, in particular.
“Type O Negative is often called the universal blood type because it can be safely transfused to patients of any blood type in an emergency,” said Jonathan DeCoste, senior blood donor recruiter at Cape Cod Healthcare. “Our supply is currently low, and we encourage anyone with O Negative blood who is eligible to donate. Every donation can make a lifesaving difference.”
If you or someone you know has O Negative blood, please consider making an appointment at one of our upcoming blood drives.
Donors to CCHC blood drives this month will receive a limited-edition T-shirt.
All donations help our families, friends and neighbors.
To make an appointment for a blood drive on the Cape this month, please visit the blood donor portal - https://srt.capecodhealth.org/donorportal/
Donations can also be made at the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Blood Donor Center at Cape Cod Hospital. The donor center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make an appointment for the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Blood Donor Center, please call us at 508-862-5663.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy Teams up with New Balance and Clean Harbors to Enhance Campus Wellness
Investment to fund construction of the New Balance Wellness Center
for student health and fitness
BUZZARDS BAY, MA, ISSUED JUNE 29, 2026… Boston-based global athletic leader New Balance Athletics, Inc. and Norwell-based North American environmental leader Clean Harbors join Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) in announcing that they have entered into an agreement to support construction of a new campus wellness resource, which will be named the New Balance Wellness Center at the Clean Harbors Athletic Facility.
The $30M, 18,000-square-foot Center will be located adjacent and connected to the Academy’s main gymnasium, creating a hub for student health, fitness, and well-being.
The project recently received final approval from the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management & Maintenance (DCAMM), which also completed a feasibility study. DCAMM is currently working with MMA on designer selection for the project. Study and design will take place through 2027, and construction is expected to take approximately 18 months. The new Center is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2029.
"New Balance is proud to support Massachusetts Maritime Academy through this new wellness Center that will provide enhanced athletic and well-being opportunities that complement the Academy’s strong academic and skill development programs," said Jim Davis, New Balance Chairman.
“I am proud to partner with Massachusetts Maritime Academy on this important investment in student wellness and success,” added Alan S. McKim, Founder and former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Clean Harbors. “The Academy develops the skilled professionals and leaders who will shape the future of essential industries, and providing modern spaces that promote physical health, resilience, and teamwork is a critical part of that preparation. By supporting the renovation and enhancement of the existing athletic facility alongside the new New Balance Wellness Center, we are helping to create an environment where cadets can thrive both in the classroom and beyond.”
“Our partnership with New Balance and Clean Harbors reflects a shared belief in the power of wellness to shape future leaders,” said Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, USMS, president of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. “The New Balance Wellness Center will provide a contemporary, dynamic environment where cadets can build life-long healthy habits that support their growth into confident, capable maritime professionals.”
The collaboration also includes an annual $5,000 scholarship opportunity starting in the Fall of 2027 for a child of a New Balance associate who is attending the Academy.

Walking for a Cause: HECH’s Annual Love Walk for Housing Returns July 14th
Harwich, MA – Mark your calendar and lace up your walking shoes! It’s time for a favorite feel-good tradition that brings neighbors together, celebrates community, and helps create more affordable housing and high quality affordable childcare for families right here at home. HECH and The Children’s Center’s Love Walk is back on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026, starting at 9AM, and this year, we’re dreaming even bigger.
This joyful community walk is organized by Harwich Ecumenical Council for Housing (HECH) and The Children’s Center, supporting affordable housing and childcare for working families right here on Cape Cod. We advocate that every family deserves a safe home and every child deserves a strong start. Our goal is to raise funds for affordable housing initiatives that provide stability to our community. This year, The Children’s Center hopes to raise $13,500 – $500 for each child currently enrolled at Cape Cod’s longest running affordable childcare program. Donations will help keep tuition accessible for hardworking local families, support the Center’s dedicated educators, and provide books, art supplies, and healthy snacks for little learners.
The event kicks off at The Children’s Center (115 Sisson Rd., Harwich Port) at 9AM and finishes with a light breakfast at The First Congregational Church in Harwich Center. Walkers along this route will be wearing tie dyed t-shirts, so beep, cheer, and wave when you see the rainbow of colors!
Whether you walk, cheer from the sidewalk, or make a donation, your support powers this community-driven movement for change. Join the walk or donate today at www.hech.org/love-walk-for-housing.
Let’s walk together for love, equity, and a better tomorrow!
