(L to R) Viktoriya Dubovis, Chart Industries and Leadership Cherokee Class of 2018, accepts the Golden Can Award for her classmates; Lori Flink, owner of Allegro Business Products and graduate of the Leadership Cherokee Class of 2017, was a key coordinator of the Leading by Feeding Campaign; Todd Hayes, Cherokee County Solicitor's Office and Buster Cushing, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, were both members of the Leadership Cherokee Class of 2017 and accepted the Golden Can Award on behalf of their classmates.
The Chamber shared highlights of the Leadership Cherokee Alumni community food drive during their Thursday, November 1st Good Morning Cherokee networking event. Attendees were reminded that earlier this fall the Leadership Cherokee Class of 2018 learned there was a food shortage in area community pantries, so they challenged the Class of 2017 to see who could collect the most food. The Class of 2017 quickly responded, we can do better than this! The Class of 2017 encouraged graduates of Leadership Cherokee from 2012-2016 to take the challenge as well.
The Leadership Cherokee Leading by Feeding campaign generated 3,100 donated items ranging from fruits and vegetables to diapers and paper products. "Leading by Feeding supported those in our community who need a helping hand by filling the pantries of both the organizations who coordinate the pantries and the families in need," shared Pam Carnes, President & CEO of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. The Leadership Cherokee Class of 2018 tied with the Class of 2017 in collecting 1,111 items. These two classes received the 'Golden Can Award' signifying their commitment to the community and volunteerism. The local Chamber member food pantries supported through the Leading by Feeding initiative included: MUST Cherokee, Never Alone and Papa's Pantry.

|ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECYCLING WINNERS
Pictured from left to right: fifth grade teacher of the winning homeroom and Junior Beta Club sponsor Mrs. Covington, Assistant Principal Ethridge, Principal Roulier, and second grade teacher and Junior Beta Club sponsor Mrs. Hartman, receiving the school's new bench.
The Chamber of Commerce Going Green & Education Committees co-sponsored a two-day Plastic Bag Recycling Competition in partnership with Waste Management between nine of Cherokee County's Elementary Schools who collected over 105,000 plastic bags. This year's competition was altered to award the school with the highest average of plastic bags per student. This alteration was due to the large variance of enrollment across our Cherokee County Elementary Schools, with some varying by nearly 1,000 students. Mountain Road ES collected an amazing 25,073 bags during the two-day event which brought them to a phenomenal 57.38 bags/student. Congratulations to the students at Mountain Road. Indian Knoll ES should also be commended for an excellent job as they came in second with a higher total of plastic bags at 27,925, but a lower per student average at 30.03 bags/student.
Through a grant from Waste Management, the Chamber was able to fund this elementary school recycling initiative. The grant monies were used to purchase a bench for the winning school made from recycled plastics. The bench, which will be proudly displayed on the Mountain Road ES special education playground, includes a plaque which recognizes the school as the winner of the 2018 ES Recycling Competition sponsored by Waste Management and the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.
Through further partnership, the plastic bags collected were donated to MUST Ministries, Never Alone, and Papa's Pantry who will use them to support their ongoing projects. R & D Mechanical Services, Inc., as well as Papa's Pantry, Inc., volunteered their time and cargo vehicles to collect plastic bags and deliver them to their respective final destinations.
