The Chance to Live, Laugh and Move Forward: Calyx's Story

This is Calyx, an 11 year old boy from the Philippines. Calyx was hospitalized in 2023 with a life threatening liver bleed. Then in November 2024, he experienced another serious episode, an iliopsoas bleed. Both times, we were contacted by our program partners in the Philippines, requesting factor through our factor donation program, Project SHARE. Calyx was sent factor through Project SHARE, which allowed him access to the medicine necessary for his care. His parents are happy to report he’s back in school, and no longer in pain. Below is Calyx's story, shared by his mom, Carlan.

"We became part of Hemophilia Advocates-Philippines (HAP) in April 2017, during World Hemophilia Day. At that time, Calyx was only three years old. Since then, HAP has been a true lifeline for our family—especially during his most critical bleeds.

In November 2023, Calyx suffered a life-threatening liver bleed and was confined at the Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC) for 10 days. Doctors found 200cc of blood on his liver, and after discharge, he had to undergo one full month of strict bed rest and daily home infusions. We wouldn’t have made it through that time without HAP and the factors donated by Save One Life, which provided every vial he needed to recover.

Then in November 2024, he experienced another serious episode—an iliopsoas bleed on his left side. PCMC was at full capacity and couldn’t admit him, but thankfully, we were allowed to manage his treatment at home. Once again, HAP and Save One Life came through, helping us access the medicines needed for his 6-day home treatment.

Now, as Calyx turns 11 next month, he’s back in school, smiling, and slowly regaining his strength. He still can’t walk properly at the moment, as he continues to recover from his last bleed, but we are so thankful that he is no longer in pain and is now undergoing physical therapy.

These donations did not just treat his bleeds—they’ve given our son the chance to live, laugh, and move forward.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Save One Life, for giving Calyx a second chance at life every single time he needed it. And thank you, HAP, for never leaving our side.

— Carlan, mom of Calyx

It Takes a Village: Get to Know our Board of Directors!

At Save One Life we have a dedicated board of directors who have helped to nurture and grow the organization's mission. As the saying goes, it takes a village. We would like you to meet the village behind Save One Life.

This month we are featuring Natalie Lynch.

Introducing Natalie Lynch

Natalie Lynch describes herself as a wife and mother to lovely humans with hemophilia A. She is first and foremost a devoted mother to a bright and spirited four-year-old daughter who she describes as “too-smart-for-her-own-good. She keeps me busy and on my toes every day,” Natalie shares. “Being her mom is my greatest life joy.”

Natalie became involved with Save One Life through her visible and impactful presence in the bleeding disorders community, particularly through her work on the BloodStream Podcast and various volunteer roles. Recognizing her passion and dedication, we invited Natalie to join our Board of Directors, where she has been an invaluable asset ever since.

Natalie brings a rich tapestry of skills and experiences. She works as both a birth doula and a flight attendant, a role she has held for the past 15 years. In addition, she is a trained yoga teacher, and while she is not actively teaching at the moment, she brings the principles of yoga—mindfulness, groundedness, and embodiment—into her everyday life. A dedicated practitioner of Vipassana meditation, Natalie has completed three silent retreats and speaks thoughtfully about the stillness and insight they’ve brought her.

Recently, she has rekindled her love of writing and now publishes a weekly newsletter on Substack. She also somehow finds time to run—last year she proudly completed the NYC Marathon as part of Team NBDF.

Looking ahead, Natalie has set her sights on returning to school to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She envisions integrating her diverse passions into a holistic therapy practice focused on helping families deepen their understanding of themselves and their relationships. “I want to create a space where people can relate with greater ease and joy,” she says. Natalie plans to pursue this goal intentionally and gradually, allowing space to savor time with her daughter.

Natalie joined the board to make an impact for our blood brothers and sisters who do not have access to care and treatment. One of Natalie’s most cherished memories with Save One Life was participating in the inaugural Wheels for the World bike ride. She recalls the powerful connection to the legacy of Barry Haarde and the emotional moment of dipping her bike into the ocean at the ride’s conclusion—a gesture rich with meaning and reflection.

We’re incredibly grateful to have Natalie on our Board of Directors. Her diverse experiences, compassionate spirit, and deep commitment to our mission continue to enrich our organization and community.

Thank you, Natalie, for all that you bring to Save One Life!
