GLOBAL ADDICTION MEDICINE ODYSSEY BRINGS GHANAIAN TO STATESBORO
|
|
Mr. Samuel Hanu of Accra, Ghana on the Western coast of Africa recently completed a clinical rotation at Willingway. Samuel is a psychiatric nurse and is now pursuing a masters degree with a specialization in addiction medicine and traveled here as part of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He is spending nine months in parts of the US, Canada, and England, creating global connections and learning how to be an agent of change in Ghana. Addiction there and recovery from it are still highly stigmatized, says Samuel.
I
n addition to clinical rotations at Willingway through the Recovery Africa program and Healing Transitions in Virginia, Samuel attended a number of professional conferences, including the American Society of Addiction Medicine's (ASAM) 47th annual gathering in Baltimore and the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA) International Forum in Montreal. Before returning home in mid-July, he will visit King's College in London, where he is considering applying for a PhD.
Ultimately, Samuel hopes to work administratively on the national level in Ghana to help formalize addiction treatment with treatment protocols and the implementation of evidence-based practices. Treatment should be standardized, he says. For the interim, he will continue his work as a psychiatric nurse with Ghana's Mental Health Authority when he is back in Accra.
Samuel developed his passion for addiction recovery after seeing his grandfather go to rehab for drinking and losing brilliant young friends to the disease. Beyond advocating for alcoholics and addicts, he is passionate about his family and 16-month-old son, Samuel-Jayden. He expresses deep gratitude for the opportunity to learn so much during his travels but is also looking forward to reuniting with his family once home. Willingway staff and patients were honored to have Samuel with us and we wish him continued success on his recovery mission for our friends across the Atlantic!

The new design reflects the beauty of our hospital and will hopefully be more user friendly and easier to navigate. Our web design team has worked very hard on the new design so please take a look at it and let us know what you think!
