Campus closed due to severe weather
|
For the past three days, ACA has been in Cyber School due to inclement weather. The picture above is a camera view of the campus on Thursday afternoon. Please pray for the safety of city crews and first responders as this weather continues through the weekend.
Mr. Ahrens and Mr. Fitzgerald are monitoring the winter weather as the forecast shows heavy snowfall into next week. We will continue to utilize Cyber School until the roads and campus are deemed safe.
Please reach out to the office staff if you have any questions regarding Gradenet or a student's e-mail account: E-MAIL OFFICE STAFF
As a reminder, teachers may choose to meet virtually or post assignments. All students should continue to check-in with teachers and be ready at the normal class time, if the instructor wants to join in via Google Meets. For virtual class meetings, students are not required to wear their ACA uniform or spirit wear. However, all students are required to dress appropriately and remember the "spirit of the dress code."
Next week is a short week as we will have Monday off in observance of President's Day. School will resume, either in-person or via Cyber School, on Tues., Feb. 16. Please continue to monitor your e-mail and ACA's social media for updates.

|
Last Spring, ACA was forced to finish the school year in Cyber School. It was a marathon but the teachers and students came through it with a deeper appreciation for our campus and each other. In the course of our extended Cyber School, we collected tips and tricks from ACA parents. Please see the tips provided last year by members of Hen House!
|
|
How to Survive Cyber School: Tips from the Hen House
- Have a favorite board game or card game set-up for impromptu study breaks.
- Plan little fun breaks after finishing work or a project.
- Encourage kids to actually call or FaceTime friends instead of texting.
- Have a schedule
- Let things go that cause stress...this too shall pass.
- Extra hugs and spontaneous dance parties.
- Get lots of sleep.

What is Colloquia?
Colloquia are small discussion groups, offered frequently throughout the year that add another level to our academic challenge. Each colloquium studies one book, epic poem, piece of music, art, or topic, so that the focus is limited and “bite-sized.” It has only a handful of students to allow for intimate discussions of the topic. Each colloquium is offered by a mentor and is based on a work he or she loves. The colloquium meets outside the normal classroom and centers on discussion of the great elements of the piece. While students must prepare for the meetings and are expected to participate, there are no tests or grades … only a love of what can be learned for its own sake.
|
|
COLLOQUIA QUICK FACTS:
- Open to students in the School of Rhetoric (high school)
- Seniors have first choice enrollment
- Small group discussion format
- No grades or tests
- Students must complete a certain number of Colloqui points depending on their diploma track
What students receive from a colloquium is proportional to their desire for truth, goodness, and beauty, and their willingness to build relationships with the mentor and the work. We have found that in this nontraditional setting, the student often gains a greater appreciation for the mentor, and the mentor for the student, and both gain a greater love for the truth they discover together.
