Summer Edition - August 14, 2020
The start of school is just around the corner and we are excited to see our students back on campus! In this week’s Charger Newsletter, please pay special attention to the new information on the health screening procedures for both Early Childhood Education and K-8 students. The health and wellness of our community is a team effort, and we thank you all for working with us to ensure CCLS is a safe learning environment for all our students.

Our goal is to streamline communication, knowing that there is a lot of information to take in with new procedures and protocols. The MY CCLS page on the website provides the quickest access to important information. Please be sure to take some time to review MY CCLS before the first day of school.

Have a great weekend in the LORD!

First Day of School - August 19
We are looking forward to our first day of school next Wednesday, August 19! All families should have had (or will have) an opportunity to meet with your student’s homeroom teacher, to see the classroom, and to learn specific information for the beginning of school and beyond. Information about drop-off and pick-up procedures will be shared via email with ECE families today and Elementary families on Monday. Middle School families should have received information about drop-off and pick-up during teacher visits.

Our traditional Opening Chapel service will be recorded and viewed by elementary and middle school students in their classrooms on the first day of school. The service will be available for parents and family members to view at home. We invite you to watch Opening Chapel on Wednesday, August 19, to start the school year with “Something Better” (our 2020-21 theme)! A video link will be communicated on August 19.
Daily Health Screening Protocol
As we look forward to returning to school next week, CCLS leadership is striving to make decisions that promote the safety and health (physical, social, and emotional) of our staff, students, and families. One approach that we will take to achieve that goal as we start the school year is Daily Health Screening for students and staff.

We have researched best practices and consulted with local leaders to develop Daily Health Screening Protocols. We ask all parents to read our “Daily Health Screening Policies - 2020-2021”, which contains information specific for ECE students, K-8 students, staff, and visitors to the school. Please note that, as new information has been obtained, screening procedures may have changed from what was previously communicated to you at teacher visits.

All Kindergarten - 8th grade students will be screened by parents at home in the morning prior to arrival at school. Parents will fill out the “Attendance & Health Screening Form for K-8 Students” (linked here and posted on MY CCLS). We ask K-8 parents to please make yourselves familiar with the form prior to the first day of school. You can fill out test responses to the form any time between today and next Tuesday. If you have questions about the form, please contact [email protected].
Medication Drop-off for K-8 families
Families desiring to hand deliver student medication directly to the school medical professionals, Mrs. Whitney Shamp and Mrs. Nikki Ochs, may do so. We are offering a time this Sunday, August 16 from 3:00-4:30 at the Kirkwood campus located at 110 West Woodbine Avenue.

Typically, families have the opportunity to bring needed student medications during Charger Night. Unfortunately, this event has been canceled this year. This is optional, not mandatory. If you desire to drop off medication, along with the signed medication administration form, please see Whitney Shamp and Nikki Ochs this Sunday. If you cannot find your medication form, some copies will be available to be filled out.
New School Lunch Program
The Charger Cafe will be opening on August 19! Each day a hot lunch or salad plate option will be available for purchase, with milk, for $3.75. Extra entree will be available for $1.50, and milk will be available for $0.15. To begin the year, no “extras” will be offered (chips, granola bars, cookies, etc). In order for the lunch program to run efficiently, parents will be asked to order lunches on a weekly basis.

Place your order by Sunday evening for the first week of school at this link: CCLS Lunch Order Form. The form is also posted on the MY CCLS website under “Lunch Program”.
Fall Sports Update
We plan to begin the year offering volleyball, soccer, and cross country as we normally have. Our intention is to move toward playing games and running in meets when it is possible to do so. See below for more specific information about each sport.

  • Soccer: Coaches will be putting together a once a week skills development plan to start around the last week of August for grades K-4. In grades 5-8, this might be two days a week. CYC is HOPEFUL games can begin the weekend of September 18 but may still start in early October. The middle school Lutheran League is tentatively planning to begin games in October. All of this will be with proper precautions. NOTE: We are in need of a 5th grade boys coach. Please contact Royce Hartmann if you can help coachComplete the soccer registration by Monday, August 17  using this link: 2020 Soccer Registration.
  • Volleyball: This is offered for grades 5-8. Practices will be held 2-3 times per week, and we will schedule games when it is possible. Typically we have teams for 5th grade (B2), 6th grade (B1), and two teams for 7th and 8th grade (A1 & A2).
  • Cross Country: The Lutheran League is currently considering no CC meets for grades K-4. We are still hopeful to at least get the students out to do some running. More information will be coming soon. Middle school runners will begin with practices, and they will run competitively when possible.  If your son or daughter would like to participate in volleyball or cross country, please fill out a brief Google form 2020 Volleyball and Cross Country Registration.
Uniforms, Spirit Wear & School Supplies
If you didn't get a chance to place your order for this year's theme shirts or CCLS masks, we have extras available! There are limited quantities, so they will be available on a first come first serve basis. Fill out the form to request sizes and masks. One we confirm that they are available for you, we will give them to your child and your TADS account will be charged.
*For orders that have already been placed, they will be sent home with your oldest child on the first day of school.
The deadline has passed for delivery of uniforms and spirit wear by the first day of school, but items can be ordered at any time during the school year. Go to MY CCLS under the “Uniforms and Spirit Wear” tab for links.

If you previously placed an order for Spirit Wear with  Dot the I and requested "Porch Pickup", items may be picked up at 4621 Mehl Ave., 63129 on or after Friday, Aug 14. Orders marked for School Pick Up will be sent home with students on the first day of school. New Spirit Wear orders, placed this week, will be available on September 3.
TEAMMATES Volunteer Opportunities
People are needed for the following areas as soon as possible:

Elementary Lunchroom Helpers: with lunch plans including in-classroom eating for K-2, we could use two extra sets of helping hands to safely and effectively help with hot lunch. If you are available one day a week or one day a month, please sign up here. All volunteers will need to have their temperature taken upon arrival and wear a mask and gloves. Thanks for your help!

Classroom Coordinators (or room parents) are needed for every classroom. Classroom Coordinators act as a teacher's contact person for all classroom events/celebrations and recruit parent volunteers to run each of the celebrations (exact party details will be communicated closer to celebration date). This is a communication-based volunteer position so it is great for someone interested in being an "at home" volunteer. Click here to volunteer at the elementary school or click here to volunteer at the middle school campus.
CCLS has two part-time opportunities for Kid Kare Workers. Hours are after school, starting at 3 or 3:30pm and finishing at 5:30pm. Great opportunity for adults, college students, or even high school juniors or seniors. Pay rate: $12.26/hr. Apply online by clicking CAREERS at the bottom of the school webpage or email [email protected]
MY CCLS - Parent Portal
We encourage all CCLS parents to become familiar with the newly updated “MY CCLS” portal on our CCLS website
(ccls-stlouis.org/myccls). Policies, procedures, forms, and links will all be posted to this page in the weeks ahead and throughout the school year. This provides a one-stop place for our families to find the CCLS information that they need!
