Good Day, Charlestown!

Friendly Reminder:

It's that time of year when ducks are out and about. As they often cross the road, it's important to keep an eye out for them and be cautious while driving. Let's make sure we do our part to keep these adorable creatures safe.

Spring Projects: Is a Permit Required?

If you are planning to complete repairs or upgrades on your home, interior or exterior, make sure to speak to our Code Enforcement Officer, Ken Hamilton, before starting your project to see if a zoning/building permit is required.

Here are some examples of when a permit is required:

MINOR Zoning/Building Permit - Fee $20 ($100 after work starts)

  • Fences
  • Tree removal
  • Major landscaping, i.e. adding rock or gravel, concrete patios, etc.
  • Roof or siding repair
  • Permit not required if in-kind replacements; however, a permit is required with the Town and the County if structural repairs are anticipated or planned.
  • Change type of driveway surface

MAJOR Zoning/Building Permit - Fee $50 ($250 after work starts)

  • New dwellings
  • Garages/sheds
  • Additions
  • Above ground and in-ground swimming pools
  • Decks/patios/porches and/or enclosing thereof
  • Rooftop Solar
  • Interior Renovations
  • Demolition

Major permits, and some minor permits, will be reviewed by the Charlestown Planning & Zoning Commission. Planning & Zoning meetings are held on the 1st Thursday after the 1st Tuesday of every month. Permits must be submitted by the Friday before the meeting date. If your home is in the Historic District, or in an HOA, other requirements may apply.

Town-Wide Scavenger Hunt

Saturday, April 13th - 11am to 1pm

Free and fun for all ages!

The hunt will start no sooner than 11:00am, will include all sections of Town, and prizes will be awarded to the first three (3) participants, or groups of participants, that meet us at Avalon Park with their completed list by 1:00pm. The list will be emailed/posted promptly at 11:00am; physical copies will be available at Avalon Park.

How It Works:

  1. Find and photograph yourself or your group with as many items on the list as you can before the time runs out. We'll be looking at photo timestamps!
  2. Once you're done, or at 1:00pm, whichever happens first, meet us at Avalon Park Stage to review your photographs.
  3. The first three (3) participants or groups to complete the list and be verified by us will receive a prize. Prizes include gift cards to Market Street Café and surprises for kids.
  4. Bonus points if you have our app, Historic Charlestown, downloaded on your mobile device!

We hope to see you there!

Upcoming Town Hall Meetings with Residents

The purpose of these meetings is to address any concerns residents may have and help answer questions about their neighborhoods. The meetings are being led by the residents themselves, and the Commissioners are actively listening to their feedback and suggestions. The main objective is to ensure that every resident is heard and valued, and to establish a better relationship with Town government in the process.
