Today, spring is in the air; however, a glance ahead reveals we can probably expect a cold snap next week. After many years, I acknowledge the weather highs and lows that spring in northern Nevada always brings, but I sure am ready for full spring days now!
National awareness day and month designations fill our April calendars. There are so many significant ones in April, all providing opportunities to be involved, support, and learn about a variety of issues.
At The Children’s Cabinet, and all around the state, we are planting blue pinwheels for National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Increased awareness is a key factor in the prevention of child abuse. Please look for the blue pinwheels and also read below for details on awareness and outreach efforts in our community.
Also, did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? Our partner Hope Means Nevada will be posting helpful stress reduction tips on their Instagram and website. Visit @HopeMeansNevada or the website for great information on mental health self-care.
Other important designations in April include Autism Acceptance Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Nevada Food Waste Awareness Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, and many more. Whatever cause speaks to you, we encourage you to see how you can get involved, attend events, and increase awareness. It all makes a difference!

National Child Abuse Prevention Month
|
|
Nevada went blue Friday, April 1, 2022, with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign. This national event advocates for the prevention of child abuse. The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve. We hope every time someone sees a blue pinwheel it brings awareness to the issue of child abuse in our community.
There are many fun activities for children in honor of this national observance. You can access the virtual kits in English and Spanish. Plus see the full list of community events here.

Program Spotlight: Supporting Former Foster Youth
|
|
When youth age out of foster care, it can be a scary and confusing time. The Children’s Cabinet’s Case Management Team is always here to help.
Case managers can offer Life Skills Classes that relate to career preparation, employment, education, health and nutrition, home management, money management, and more. Additionally, our case managers can help former foster youth with Educational Training Vouchers (ETV), money for school! The ETV Program is a national program for youth who qualify and it provides funding for you to attend an accredited college, university, vocational, or technical school.
