Let's Celebrate Moms in May
|
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We hope everyone takes some time not only this month, but throughout the year, to think about the importance of educating ourselves, leaning in, showing compassion, listening, and offering support. Helping those who are struggling to not feel alone is something we can all do. And, in addition to helping those around us, it is also important to take care of ourselves by making self-care a priority in our daily lives. Below we have provided tips to boost mental health, and we always encourage connecting with a trained professional to help if the feeling persists.
This is Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers play a critically important role in the lives of our community’s children. The last two years have been wrought with challenges and I think many of us have an enhanced appreciation for all that teachers do day-in and day-out to support our kids. Even if you do not have school-age children, please take a moment to acknowledge a teacher and thank them for all they do!
May also marks Mother's Day! I enjoy a day that starts with a great cup of coffee and a leisurely morning, and I always hope for weather that allows for a hike or time to plant our garden. At this point, the weather is looking a little iffy on Sunday with an expected high of 43 chilly degrees so this year it might be an afternoon at the movies, or in front of the fire! I always look forward to spending the day with my children (now adults) and having dinner with my mom. Nothing too over the top for me, just time together is all this mom needs. Wishing all the moms out there the day you want and I hope you feel celebrated and appreciated!
Thank you all for your continued support of our mission to keep children safe and families together.

In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, here are some tips for youth and adults from Mental Health America:
- Strengthen your connections: Connect with friends and family, connect with your community, and also connect with yourself. Listen to your body and check in regularly.
- Meditate: Take some time for calming down and find what works for you. Is it music, is it a meditation app, is it 10 minutes or 30? Find a meditation method that works for you.
- Work toward your goals: Celebrate those small steps that keep your momentum, even if it is just writing it down to keep you motivated.
- Find time for enjoyment each day: This can be big or small. Do you like to dance? Then dance! Do you like reading? Find a good book or even a fun article.

Program Spotlight: Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)
|
|
Taylor Morgan, Children's Cabinet YMHFA Lead Instructor, was the recipient of the Mental Health First Aid Community Impact Award and named 2021 National Instructor of the Year. We are beyond excited about his accomplishment and the amazing work from the rest of the skilled trainers, Del Bates, Cynthia Carstairs, Patricia Lopez, and Allie Nelson.
Provided by the National Council for Behavioral Health and funding granted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) allows us to offer these free courses.
The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

Join the Brain Building Movement
|
|
Are you a business looking to support your employees and make an impact in your community?
90% of a child's brain is developed before kindergarten. A child's relationships and experiences in the early years are crucial for preparing for school, friends, and life. Businesses can play a promising role in lifting the importance of early brain development. The Children's Cabinet has partnered with Vroom, a global program that makes it easy to support and engage families around children's learning and development.
Join us for a 15-minute, virtual presentation on May 20 at 12 p.m. and let us show you how Vroom works and how easy it is to join Nevada’s FREE Brain Building Movement!
