Bring on October

It is hard to complain about these beautiful, warm days and cooler nights. Fall in northern Nevada is hard to beat and I love seeing the bright red and yellow leaves on the trees and bushes. Fall shifts us into thinking about the upcoming holiday season and the quickly approaching Nevada Day and Halloween celebrations. There are many activities happening throughout October, please check out the list of ideas below for you and your family.

October has two public awareness distinctions that are important to The Children’s Cabinet's mission of keeping children safe and families together. It is National Bullying Prevention Month and National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In Nevada schools, SafeVoice is an anonymous reporting system that students can call, or use digitally, to submit tips concerning their safety or the safety of others. You can find SafeVoice at www.safevoicenv.org, by calling 833-216-SAFE, or download the SafeVoice app to a mobile device.

The Children's Cabinet Safe Place program in northern Nevada is a 24/7 resource for youth in crisis. We partner with area businesses (all marked with bright yellow signs) to provide a network of "safe places" where youth can go for immediate help. Youth can also dial our Safe Place hotline at 1-800-536-4588 or TEXT "SAFE" with their current location to 4HELP (4457) to reach a Children's Cabinet Case Manager. You may see our Safe Place team out in the community doing school and street outreach making sure youth know about Safe Place and the safety and counseling resources available to them.

First Annual Washoe County Youth Mental Health Summit

Connect Washoe County, an initiative of The Children’s Cabinet, Renown Health, State Office of Suicide Prevention, and Washoe County School District, is holding the First Annual Washoe County Youth Mental Health Summit Monday, October 24. This event is offered at no cost and includes dynamic speakers and panelists coming together to talk about community resources, prevention services, crisis response, and more. Halloween Events

Fall in Nevada is the perfect time to get outdoors with your family! There are so many great places to visit. If you are a lover of pumpkin patches, there are quite a few throughout the state.

The Nevada Day Parade will be at the State’s capital Saturday, October 29! Visit the website to stay up to date on details and the schedule of events.

Best Places for Working Parents

The Children’s Cabinet has launched an exciting new program to help support Nevada businesses. We have partnered with Best Places for Working Parents to bring employer designation and badging to Nevada. Businesses can take a free, confidential, 3-minute survey to see if they qualify as a “family-friendly” business.

If they qualify, the business will receive a digital badge and listing on the website which they can use to advertise their achievement and help to attract talent.

If the business does not qualify and needs additional support to move to the next level, we have free services to help them achieve the designation.

The holidays can be a challenging time for many. To help make the season a little brighter for children and families, The Children’s Cabinet is accepting toys and gift cards for local families.
