The Children’s Center Utah Connection

July 2023 | Vol.11

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

Rebecca J. Dutson, President and CEO

Dear Mary,

I am writing with inspiring news: After months of dreaming, planning, designing, and collaborating, The Children’s Center Utah team will move into our new location at 3725 West 4100 South in West Valley City at the end of this month. We will be closed for services the week of July 24, reopening Monday, July 31.

The vision of the new children’s mental health campus has been years in the making, and we are deeply grateful for the outstanding support of individuals, foundations, corporations, and the State of Utah, which has made this exciting new era for children’s mental health in Utah possible.

Special thanks to Capital Campaign Honorary Co-Chairs, Krista Sorenson, and Christian Gardner, along with Board and Capital Campaign Committee Chair Greg Summerhays. Our additional appreciation goes to Past Board Chair Kathleen Pitcher Tobey and Renovation Committee Chair Jenn Barlow. Much gratitude is felt for their tremendous leadership.

The new campus will feature:

  • Additional group therapy rooms for our Therapeutic Preschool Program
  • Increased space for clinicians, enabling more therapy sessions per day
  • Outstanding meeting and collaborative space to foster community partnerships and provide specialized training to providers

The beautiful space intentionally incorporates therapeutic design elements—everything from the layout to the lighting was designed with hope and healing in mind.

The central location in West Valley City will improve access to our services for children, families, and caregivers. We anticipate welcoming local, regional, and national Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) leaders to this new space to strengthen crucial workforce development efforts.

The campus will serve as the hub for the statewide expansion of our efforts to Utah, Davis/Weber, and Washington counties during the next decade. It is truly an exciting time, not only for our organization but also for Utah children and families!

During our more than 60-year history, The Children’s Center Utah together with its many leaders and supporters has laid a strong foundation for early childhood mental health in Utah through its evidence-based and trauma-informed work. Your support today allows us to move forward in these bold, innovative ways.

Please Save the Date for our ribbon cutting, to be held Monday, September 25 at 10:00 a.m. We hope to see you there as we celebrate the many people and partners playing a role in this extraordinary effort.

Members of our clinical team visit DOVE Center in

St. George to provide training on a set of skills to support children who have experienced trauma.

The DOVE Center works to empower those impacted by domestic abuse and sexual violence by providing safe shelter and trauma-informed services to facilitate safety, healing, and assault recovery.

Infant Toddler Court Program

In May, the 5th Judicial District became the first expansion site for our Utah Infant-Toddler Court Program (ITCP), a federally funded HRSA grant project.

Project Director Dr. Jennifer Mitchell, and the State Coordinator, Tiffany Perry, met with a local juvenile court judge, child welfare administrators, and leaders from community organizations virtually in the preceding months to spread awareness about the project.

We look forward to engaging with our partners from

REASONS TO CELEBRATE

New Playspace!

At the beginning of the year, children in our Therapeutic Preschool program had the opportunity to draw their dream playspace.

In May, their dreams came true when over 100 volunteers built a new playspace in only four hours at our new children's mental health campus.

Thank you to KABOOM! and Discover for choosing The Children's Center Utah as your community partner!

We are very grateful to everyone who participated in the project. This new playspace will spark joy and foster a sense of belonging for toddlers and preschoolers receiving therapeutic services.

2023 SHINE Gala

Over 450 incredible supporters filled the Gallivan Center Plaza during the 2023 SHINE Gala raising $805,606! Our highest total to date!

The event included a silent auction, opportunity drawings, a photo booth, and a signature drink by Ogden Distillery and Five Wives Vodka.

At the end of the night, a live auction and a musical performance by actress and singer Kate Reinders, currently known as Miss Jenn in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series closed the event.

Thank you to the volunteers, donors, and in-kind donors who support this event. Your generosity ensures access to infant and early childhood mental health care.

Special thanks to our 2023 Co-Chairs, McKell Lowe and Katie Wood.

Donations totaling $108,000 were matched dollar for dollar by Optum Bank, Pat and Florence King, The Stephen G. and Susan E. Denkers Family Foundation, and UBS Bank.

Our team had an amazing time at our All Staff summer picnic! We headed to the park and enjoyed some delicious food from two fantastic food trucks.
