PRESENT RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS’ A SEA SYMPHONY
AT CARNEGIE HALL ON FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 2023, at 8PM

Soprano Tami Petty and Baritone Hadleigh Adams are the Featured Soloists for Performance of Vaughan Williams’ Epic Work

NEW YORK, NY — On Friday, April 21, 20203 at 8:00 p.m. at Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, Music Director John Maclay will lead the Choral Society and Orchestra of Grace Church in a performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony. Featured soloists Tami Petty (soprano) and Hadleigh Adams (baritone) will join the ensemble for this performance of a rarely heard masterwork by one of the great symphonists of the 20th century.

Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of the foremost English composers of the 20th century, beloved by listeners and credited with nine symphonies and countless choral works. With his first major multi-movement work, the 1910 A Sea Symphony, he refashioned the role of the chorus in the symphonic form. This highly original synthesis of words and music features the chorus in every movement, woven into the structure and texture of the piece. Stirred by a youthful encounter with the bold and expansive poetry of Walt Whitman, Vaughan Williams selected passages from his well-worn copy of Leaves of Grass that invoked the sea as a call to both outer and inner exploration. In A Sea Symphony, the listener experiences an ocean voyage as a metaphor for one’s personal journey through life.

John Maclay is in his twenty-fourth season as music director of the Choral Society. The Choral Society’s 2005 debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of its prestigious Concerts and Lectures Series was noted by critics for its “carefully considered” programming and the “discipline and passion” of the chorus. John accompanied and conducted choruses at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. While in graduate school, he was assistant conductor of the Harvard Glee Club, America’s oldest collegiate chorus.

Major choral-orchestral works performed by the Choral Society under Maclay’s baton include the Verdi Requiem, Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem, Bach Mass in B minor, Beethoven Missa Solemnis, Brahms Requiem, Duruflé Requiem, Bernstein Chichester Psalms, Barber Prayers of Kierkegaard, and Fauré Requiem, as well as Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Haydn’s Creation and late masses.
