Today is World Listening Day

There are many different national holidays throughout the year that National Today has curated to make our day-to-day a little more interesting and celebratory! One of these days happens to be “World Listening Day,” which occurs every year on July 18th. World Listening Day was established in 2010, and has a history stemming back to composer and environmentalist, Raymond Murray Schafer, when he developed his World Soundscape Project and laid the groundwork for the field of acoustic ecology in the 1970’s. The 2022 World Listening Day theme is Listening Across Boundaries. You can read more about the meaning and intention behind this year’s theme here.  A couple of ways that National Today encourages us to observe World Listening Day is to go on a “found sound” walk, paying specific attention to the sounds that immediately surround us. Another way is to attend a concert. We have an upcoming collaborative concert event for you to attend on July 31st, 6:30 pm, at Chautauqua Auditorium, as a few Prima Voce singers will be performing with Colorado Music Festival in the concertized version of Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A Conversation with Dr. Susan Russell

Dr. Susan Russell joined us from Penn State University during our online COVID programming which helped educate, entertain, and keep engaged our singing community during the year we were not singing in person. Dr. Russell is a Penn State Laureate, meaning she travels to the 48 campuses to give inspirational workshops and talks. A former Broadway performer and now an Associate Professor of Theater, Dr. Russell is known for her Cultural Conversations workshops that brought together "town and gown" to explore difficult cultural topics through theater and music. In this excerpt from a conversation with Boulder Concert Chorale Artistic Director Dr. Vicki Burrichter, she talks about the classical hero's journey in Stephen Mitchell's translation of "Gilgamesh." Only a few days before the conversation, the King Sooper's shootings had occurred and the search for some kind of meaning to take from such a horrific event shaped the discussion.
