This Sunday in Worship

Calling all Mad Men fans!  This week we'll listen to the wisdom of Madison Avenue advertising agencies and compare it to the purpose of the 10th commandment, "you shall not covet."  If you aren't familiar with the television show Mad Men, I promise to provide enough context for all of us to go on this journey together.  I'll see you in worship Sunday for the last of our four weeks with the Ten Commandments!
Memorial Service for Dixon Bond

First UCC will be celebrating the life of Dixon Bond with a memorial service at 11:00a.m. on Monday July 14 and a lunch to follow. There will also be a visitation from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at First UCC.

Helping Special Functions

Are you available to assist with the luncheon following the Monday, July 14 funeral for Dixon Bond?  Please contact Bobbie Peterson (645-6782 or bobbie514@usfamily.net) to volunteer or get more information. The Special Functions team could use some help with the set-up on Sunday, serving the lunch on Monday, and making bars.
Pilgrim Point All-Church Retreat

The Pilgrim Point All Church Retreat is upon us!  The bus for Pilgrim Point will be leaving from the First UCC parking lot at 12:30 p.m. on July 18.  If you haven't returned your registration materials, please do so ASAP.  We're looking forward to seeing you at Pilgrim Point!
Special Congregational Meeting July 27

The church's aging boiler failed repeatedly last winter, causing expensive emergency repairs.  Recent, professional assessment resulted in a strong recommendation for replacement this summer rather than risk catastrophic failure when we need heat the most.

Research on appropriate equipment that meets engineering standards for our historical building has produced one bid of $225,000 and another bid has been requested.  Because this is an unexpected and unbudgeted expense, the Trustees have explored ways to finance the work in a timely way. To meet the heating season deadline, maintain reasonable reserves, and avoid significant debt, the Trustees recommend dividing the cost so that half comes from reserves (to be replaced over time) and half comes from a loan (to be repaid on a reasonable schedule).  The Facilities Committee would evaluate bids and forward a recommendation to the Trustees for review. The Moderator and Treasurer will then sign a contract with the chosen vendor and the Trustees will arrange a loan with acceptable terms.  Facilities and Trustees will approach the project holistically, engaging independent engineering advice, seeking a highly-energy-efficient installation, and anticipating the likelihood of eventual air conditioning.

At the special congregational meeting after worship on July 27, we will vote to grant the Trustees and Facilities committee the authority to pursue the plan outlined above.

We are pleased to announce that the 2014 church directory is published and available in the church office. Your patience has been appreciated!

Solar Update

Here's the latest on First UCC's upcoming solar installation.  Due to increased interest in solar power, the solar panel manufacturer, TenK, is having problems keeping up with demand.  This is good news, though it will push back our installation. All Energy Solar is expecting that solar panels will be available from Ten K in mid-July.  As soon as we know when contractors will be installing panels at First UCC, we'll be sure to let you know!
Thank You Jennifer Kluzak!

Last week our Office Manager Jennifer Kluzak accepted a full-time position as the Office Manager at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Northfield.  Her last day at First UCC will be Friday July 11th.

Jennifer has been the First UCC Office Manager for 3 years.  During that time she has helped the church through a tremendous amount of pastoral transition, working with four different pastors.  Jennifer has improved communication within the church, managing a shift to Constant Contact software and facilitating the move to a weekly newsletter.  She has helped us integrate video into our website, sync our website, newsletter and Facebook page, and she is helping to prepare a new office database before she leaves.  She has even been scheduling Food Trucks!  All of this is in addition to working with office volunteers, preparing the weekly bulletin, greeting all office visitors and managing the use of our building.

We're going to miss Jennifer's skill and dedication to the ministry and mission of First UCC.  Jennifer has been a pleasure to work with, and we will miss her friendly presence around the office.  We give God thanks for her work, and ask for God's blessing to go with her as she begins at St. Dominic's.

Volunteers/Donors

"Challenge Yourself to End Hunger"

Accept the 2014 Food Shelf Challenge from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless teaming with the Community Action Center of Northfield this July.

You can help the families we serve make great meal time memories.

What if you had to decide which of your children will eat today because there isn't enough food in the house for everyone?

Summer should be a time for relaxation and vacation.  But for many Minnesota families, summer is a stressful time.  With children out of school and out of school meal programs, many parents worry about how to feed everyone in the house.  And no child should go without food.

Make a bigger impact on hunger in Northfield this July

Every day, Minnesota food shelves serve 3,500 children.  Last July the CAC Food Shelf served 1,330 individuals and 432 families.  You can make a real difference this year by donating throughout the month of July.

The more you donate, the larger our food shelf's grant from Open Your Heart to the Hunger and Homeless will be.  The challenge funds will proportionally match your donation.  Your donation will go farther due to our buying power.  We can stretch one dollar 3x's as much through our partnership with food banks.  $55 will purchase 450 lbs. of food and feed 3 families for 3 to 6 days.

Thank you Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless for your match grant!

Food Shelf Accepts Garden Produce

The Food Shelf of the CAC will accept produce from home gardens.  Produce may be delivered to the Food Shelf on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday from 12pm to 5pm. For more information please call the CAC at 507-664-3550.
