This Sunday in Worship

This Sunday at 9:30 a.m., worship will be held at historic Valley Grove.  Click here for find directions. Please bring a picnic brunch for you and your household, and we'll break bread together under the trees.  Water and lemonade will be provided.

We'll continue our focus on the Ten Commandments by talking about the command to Honor the Sabbath. Sabbath talk got postponed by one week, but we'll get to it this week, I promise.

Adult Chaperone Needed for Youth Trip to Pilgrim Point

Pastor Abby and I just learned that the adult chaperone who was planning to go on next week's youth trip to Pilgrim Point is having some health problems and will not be able to go.  We're in need of an adult to volunteer to accompany Pastor Abby and the youth.  The group will be leaving Tuesday and returning Friday.  They will be staying at Pilgrim Point, doing some work at the camp and also partnering with Habitat for Humanity in the Alexandria area.  It will be a fun trip, and it's a great group of youth!

Contact Pastor Todd if you are able to help - pastortodd@firstucc.org

The Photo Directory is Here!!!

We are pleased to announce that the 2014 church directory is published and available in the church office. Your patience has been appreciated!

Solar Update

Here's the latest on First UCC's upcoming solar installation.  Due to increased interest in solar power, the solar panel manufacturer, TenK, is having problems keeping up with demand.  This is good news, though it will push back our installation. All Energy Solar is expecting that solar panels will be available from Ten K in mid-July.  As soon as we know when contractors will be installing panels at First UCC, we'll be sure to let you know!
Thank You Jennifer Kluzak!

Last week our Office Manager Jennifer Kluzak accepted a full-time position as the Office Manager at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Northfield.  Her last day at First UCC will be Friday July 11th.

Jennifer has been the First UCC Office Manager for 3 years.  During that time she has helped the church through a tremendous amount of pastoral transition, working with four different pastors.  Jennifer has improved communication within the church, managing a shift to Constant Contact software and facilitating the move to a weekly newsletter.  She has helped us integrate video into our website, sync our website, newsletter and Facebook page, and she is helping to prepare a new office database before she leaves.  She has even been scheduling Food Trucks!  All of this is in addition to working with office volunteers, preparing the weekly bulletin, greeting all office visitors and managing the use of our building.

We're going to miss Jennifer's skill and dedication to the ministry and mission of First UCC.  Jennifer has been a pleasure to work with, and we will miss her friendly presence around the office.  We give God thanks for her work, and ask for God's blessing to go with her as she begins at St. Dominic's.
Food Shelf

Thank you to the 30 + volunteers that took a shift or two during the month of June at the Food Shelf. This is just one more ministry of our church that exhibits our presence in the community.
Highway Clean-Up

We are looking for an adult or family who is passionate about the environment to help organize our youth to do clean-up as part of the Adopt-A-Highway project. If this sounds like you, let Abby know.

Perhaps it is the teal shirts.  Perhaps it is the baggy shorts, mismatched socks and grey hair.  Perhaps it is the fun-loving attitude and excessive use of ridiculous nicknames.  Whatever the reason, other teams may not take us seriously when we show up to play.  This may or may not have been the case for Sunday's match against the well-dressed Canvas Church team.  After batting through the order in the top of the first, the Teal Tide had a comfortable 7 run lead.  Canvas quickly put two runners on when Doug "the Admiral" Morris hung a knuckleball over the center part of the plate and we all watched as the ball majestically carried over the centerfield fence.  Little did we know at the time that this would be the end of the Canvas offense thanks to defensive highlights from Brad Hoff, Adam Hoffman and Erik Burton.  The top half of the second, third and fourth innings began like the first with the first four Apostles reaching base and scoring.  When the dust settled the Apostles moved to 5-1 on the season with a 23-3 victory. Join us on Sunday, July 13th for a match-up against St. Peters, Babcock Park, free admission to the first fifty fans.

Summer Lunch Program
Volunteers Needed

School is almost out and the CAC is gearing up for the Summer Lunch Program. Some changes have been made since the initial launch last year and are outlined below:

The open program will run from Monday, June 16 - Friday, August 15 for a total of 9 weeks.

There is just one location at the Jefferson Square Townhomes Community Room, 1356 Jefferson Rd.

Lunch will be offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The serving time is 12:15 - 1:00 pm.

The really big change is that the CAC is happy to offer lunch to adults who accompany their children. Adult meals cannot be reimbursed through this program but it is important to build community through feeding families.

The program will be staffed by 2 CAC employees and will also rely on volunteers. I am looking for 2 adult volunteers to help with the scaled down program this year. Ideally the volunteers would arrive at Jefferson Square about noon and be finished by 1:30. Churches can sign-up for specific days or weeks and send volunteers, or individuals can sign up directly. Please contact me via email at vivant.beth@communityactioncenter.org to schedule volunteer time.

Many thanks for your help and commitment to feeding families this summer!

Sincerely,

Beth Vivant

Summer Food Service Coordinator
