“Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others.” – Philippians 2:4
The stated purpose of UWFaith is “To improve the lives of women, children and youth”. We do this through speaking out to raise awareness, through our actions to physically improve peoples lives and through fund raising to support programs in our hometowns and across the world.
One of the things I love about UWFaith is our National and International Mission Institutes. Don’t get me wrong, I love my local Methodist Thrift Store and our participation in local non-profits that support women and families in Pagosa Springs! However, the thing that is unique about UWFaith is the way it facilitates my ability to touch the lives of women and children in a broader and deeper way than my individual unit can on its own. Through the connected
sisterhood of UWFaith I am able to support medical hospitals in Africa and families of color in Alabama. Closer to home there are three mission institutes in or near our district boundaries:
- Crossroads Urban Center in Salt Lake City, UT provides food, clothing, household essentials and community organizing for low-income Utahns.
- McCurdy Ministries Community Center in Espanola, NM empowers children and families through education, life skills and faith-based programs.
- Navajo United Methodist Center in Farmington, NM provides transitional living for survivors and families of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
These are programs that require that we all come TOGETHER to share our information, skills and funds, in order to address larger needs.
Our local unit is taking a field trip this month to visit the Navajo United Methodist Center and to learn more about their wonderful working helping survivors of abuse get a new start. I encourage you to look at the many materials available on our UWFaith website regarding the
wide array of outreach programs supported UWFaith through the National Mission Institutes. Pick out one that you think will resonate with the interests of your local unit and share a video or information flyer. As your unit reflects on your budget goals for this year and the next, know that the funds you submit either through your Mission Pledge to national or as designated funds to a specific mission institute are doing great things! These funds allow you to havebigger impact on the lives of women, children and youth around the world.
Your Sister in Christ,
Laura Lunsford, District President

The Four Winds
by Kristin Hannah
This is a powerful epic about love, heroism and hope during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. Millions of people were out of work and even the land seemed to have turned against them as it was ravaged by dust storms and drought. The novel brings to life the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. Publisher’s Weekly said, “Hannah combines gritty realism with emotionally rich characters and lyrical prose that rings brightly and true from the first line.”

The Hate U Give
by Angie Thomas
Starr, 16, moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and her fancy suburban prep school. This uneasy balance is
shattered when she witnesses the fatal police shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil. Soon after, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, a drug dealer or a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets. Cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What really went down that night? The only person who can answer that is Starr.

Immediate Opportunity to be a part of the Team!
Words matter.
From speaking at a gathering of thousands to sitting around a table
doing the work of the church at District Team, words are how we get
things done. The Secretary writes our words onto a yellow tablet or
into a computer so everyone at the table can speak and work freely,
knowing ideas are caught and important things are not lost.
Our Secretary, Mari-Emilie, is joyously accepting a position as Supply
Pastor in Montana, and so the Team has an opening, an opportunity
for you to dive in and work with us as Secretary.
Secretary to the District Team is not just writing down dates and times.
We work as a Team, lifting ALL voices to be heard. As Secretary, you
would be doing God’s work on our Utah/Western Colorado District
Leadership Team, the holy and essential work for United Women in
Faith.
If this work is your calling, please contact Laura Lunsford at
lunsfordUWF@gmail.com or 970-398-1183.
