Dear Friends in Faith,

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and this season always gives me pause to reflect on what I’m truly thankful for. This has been a challenging year for many - financially difficult, emotionally heavy for families, and with the prolonged government shutdown, it’s been hard at times to stay positive.

But when I think back to our Annual Celebration in Pagosa and the Annual Gathering in Montrose, I can’t help but smile. The friendships we formed, the inspiring workshops we shared, and the funds raised for the UWF General Budget and Assembly all fill my heart with gratitude.

Our Executive Team met for our 2026 planning retreat on October 24-25. In the coming year, we’ll be visiting local units to reconnect and strengthen relationships that may have faded over time. We’ll reach out to coordinate visits during your regular meetings - we’re eager to listen, learn, and support you.

And of course, we’re looking ahead to Assembly 2026, taking place May 15-17! Registration is open now and closes November 30. Some have heard that rooms are full, but don’t worry - there are still plenty available. Just email me to set up a time to reserve yours. Since credit card details are needed, we’ll handle that by phone for your security. This will be an unforgettable event - you won’t want to miss it!

If you’d like me to visit or join your unit by Zoom to talk more about Assembly, please reach out.

Scholarship applications for Assembly are due November 15. Please return completed forms to me at beth.e.mccorkle@gmail.com.

Finally, mark your calendars for our 2026 Annual Celebration in Montrose, happening September 18-19. More details will be shared soon!

Wishing you all a joyful and peaceful Thanksgiving.

With gratitude and faith,

Beth McCorkle

Good News!

We’ve reached 33% of our total mission giving goal for the year - thank you to everyone who has contributed so far! There are still several units who have not sent in their pledges, so please remember to send in your pledges and contributions to support all five channels of giving by December 10th, so that we can share God’s love in our community and beyond.

All Executive Committee board members who still wish to submit expense vouchers for the Annual Celebration must turn them in to me by December 1st

Just a reminder: don’t forget your World Thank Offering! Be sure to get it in soon and be part of the blessing!

Jesus and the Disinherited

by Howard Thurman

Famously known as the text that Martin Luther King Jr. sought inspiration from in the days leading up to the Montgomery bus boycott, Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited helped shape the civil rights movement and changed our nation’s history forever.

In this classic theological treatise, the acclaimed theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman (1900-1981) demonstrates how the gospel may be read as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of His life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. Hatred does not empower--it decays. Only through self-love and love of one another can God's justice prevail.

December is a busy time so we are going to do something different for book discussion. No pre-reading is necessary as we gather for "Storytime" - reading and reflecting on a selection of children's books from the reading program. Come join us as we listen to several children's authors who help us view some of today's social issues through the eyes of children.

Start with Hello (and Other Simple Ways to Live as Neighbors)

by Shannan Martin

A simple path to a more deeply connected life

You want more. You want to belong to a community that looks out for each other. You believe in your bones we don't have to live detached, distracted, and divided. The question is, How? Shannan Martin invites you into deeper connection through simple resets, such as

  • Open Door > Perfect Décor. We invite others in, seeking to connect, not impress.
  • Familiar > Fussy. We serve tacos and pizza like the feasts they are, because fancy is overrated.
  • Tender > Tough. We greet the world with our hearts exposed and our guards down.

Packed with street-level practices and real-talk storytelling, Start with Hello is your field guide for a life of security, camaraderie, and joy. There is no step too small.

The Girl with the Louding Voice

by Abi Dare

I don't just want to be having any kind voice . . .

I want a louding voice.

At fourteen, Adunni dreams of getting an education and giving her family a more comfortable home in her small Nigerian village. Instead, Adunni's father sells her off to become the third wife of an old man. When tragedy strikes in her new home, Adunni flees to the wealthy enclaves of Lagos, where she becomes a house-girl to the cruel Big Madam, and prey to Big Madam's husband. But despite her situation continuously going from bad to worse, Adunni refuses to let herself be silenced. And one day, someone hears her.

RENEWABLE ENERGY ACTION ALERT!

We're calling on you to take action to protect renewable energy tax credits that benefit our communities and support our mission work. The House reconciliation bill, H.R.1, passed modifications to energy tax credits that would dismantle critical incentives for renewable energy projects.

Help us support the cause.

This past month of October and first part of November have been particularly busy for me. Amidst the quotidian (I love that word!) activities of a haircut appointment, weekly bell choir practice, and lunch with friends, I also attended the UWF Mountain Sky Conference spiritual retreat and annual gathering as well as the Utah/Western Colorado district planning meetings. Then the last week of October through November 4th, I worked as an election judge. That is a LOT of social interactions for this introvert!

My natural inclination is to want to stay home, in my quiet house, in solitude. But I realize doing that all the time isn't good for me, and it isn't what I believe God wants me to do. Phillippians 2:13 says, "God is the one who enables you both to want and to actually live out his good purposes." I think those good purposes include being in fellowship with others, making a joyful noise with music, and working to improve the lives of women, children, and youth. My life will quiet down in a few days, but I want to make sure I am listening to and acting on God's guidance to live out his good purposes.
