“I have come to believe that caring for myself is not self-indulgence. Caring for myself is an act of survival.” - Audre Lorde
Back to school time is often noted to be a time of relief for parents – knowing where their children are throughout the day can be reassuring. But in the rush of getting kids out the door and equipped for learning, the stress – particularly for women – can be overwhelming.
In a survey conducted by GCI Health and Redbook magazine, a reported 45% of women between the ages of 30 and 60 do not make time to focus on their own health. Along with their work lives, women are often scheduling, negotiating, and problem-solving to run the business of their families – leading nearly 90% of women to describe their stress levels as “moderate to high,” and nearly 40% reporting a diagnosis of anxiety or depression.
While society may suggest you can have it all, the reality is very different. “It’s like women are sitting on a two-legged stool, and we constantly need to strike that balance to keep from falling down,” says Wendy Lund, CEO of GCI Health, a global healthcare communications company. “But, by taking care of ourselves, we’re adding a third leg, making everything at work and home much easier to handle.”
