“Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it, possibly without claiming it, she stands up for all women.”
— Maya Angelou
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Not only is this month Women’s History Month, it also marks one of our founder’s birthday, Louise Noun, who was born on March 7, 1908.
Louise was a woman who asked if you were a "feminist." She taught women to stand up for what they believe, challenge what they think is wrong, have the courage to take action, and be responsible to make change. She knew that education was the antidote to poverty. She recognized that girls needed support throughout adolescence. She knew that women needed the opportunity to make their own decisions. And she told us that just because "it is" doesn't mean "it always has to be."
Although more women today are in leadership roles, more girls are going to college, and more people understand the contributions that women make, she would be frustrated - likely angry - that we've still not reached equity. Chrysalis will continue this work, as we have done for 35 years, thanks to Louise Noun. Happy birthday, Louise!
