October 2023

If over these many years, just one adult listened and had the courage and character to act, this tragedy could have been avoided.

Sexual violence is not an impulsive act, and assailants are not generally strangers. It’s about power and control. Stories of sexual abuse often carry this narrative – someone in a position of power uses their position to commit sexual abuses for the purposes of control, manipulation, gratification, or ego.

This is exactly the story that Rachael Denhollander shares: the abuse that came from someone she turned to for help – someone in “authority” – gave Dr. Larry Nassar the power to make her feel helpless, and on a larger scale, to abuse hundreds of unsuspecting athletes of all ages under the pretext of medical treatment.

Please join Chrysalis to hear from author, attorney, and advocate Rachael Denhollander, the first to publicly accuse USA Gymnastics and Olympics physician Larry Nassar of sexual abuse. Her experience led her to become the voice for hundreds of girls and young women also victimized by Dr. Nassar, who was later convicted for a multitude of crimes.

Rachael Denhollander controlled her narrative, allowing others to feel safe in doing the same. Her courage and strength demonstrate what Chrysalis works to instill in girls and women every day.

Here are a few more resources we are learning from this month:

Athlete A

In Athlete A we learn of how the multiple layers of mental, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse within USA Gymnastics were covered up, and how institutions such as the US Olympic Committee, Michigan State University and the F.B.I.were similarly complicit by suppressing reports of abuse and prioritizing their reputation, money, and power over the health, well-being, and safety of its gymnasts.

What MSU knew: 14 were warned of Nassar abuse

Victims of sexual abuse may wait years to tell anyone because of fear – fear of not being believed, fear of how others will react to you, fear of retribution, fear of being judged or ostracized. The same was true for many who were abused by Dr. Larry Nassar, whose reports were not acted upon.

Denhollander gained international recognition in 2016 as the first woman to speak publicly against USA Gymnastics’ team physician, Dr. Larry Nassar, one of the most prolific sexual abusers in recorded history. As a result of her disclosure, more than 300 women came forward with reports of Nassar’s abuse, triggering his conviction and life sentence for his crimes. Join us to hear her story, and how her strength and resolve inspired hundreds of others to end their silence. https://bit.ly/23inspiredevent
