Use of Prison Operations
A unique requirement to the e-Stewards Standard can be found in section 8.4.5 Prison Operations, which discusses the conditions that are required to be met before an e-Stewards Certified Processor can seek the approval of incarcerated labor.
To begin the process of seeking approval, a processor must ensure that the following, at a minimum, is met:
a) The operation must not receive any form of government subsidy which creates a situation where the private sector processors in the same area are less competitive;
b) Incarcerated individuals are not permitted to manage equipment containing customer data;
c) Occupational health and safety protections required by e-Stewards and legal requirements are maintained; and
d) The primary purpose of the operation is to provide job training for the future employment of prisoners following their release.
Additionally, as the e-Stewards Standard requires processors to be NAID AAA Certified, all requirements within NAID AAA must be met and the operation must be compliant with both standards.
After the above can be planned and proven, the processor seeking the use of prison labor must submit these plans to the e-Stewards Administrator for approval prior to the use of a program with incarcerated individuals.
If there are any questions regarding the use of Prison Operations, or other interpretations of the e-Stewards Standard, please contact Selena Turnock, Certification Director, at selena@e-stewards.org.
