| e-Stewards Launches Groundbreaking Environmental Benefits Calculator with Bloom ESG | |
Earlier this month we announced our strategic partnership with London-based Bloom ESG to introduce the industry's first-ever calculator of avoided CO2 emissions for ITAD Industry. This innovative tool fills a critical gap in our sector: until now, electronics recyclers and refurbishers have lacked a standardized, verifiable way to measure and report the positive environmental impact of their work, particularly the elusive "Scope 4" avoided emissions.
The new Bloom + e-Stewards ITAD Environmental Benefits Calculator uses an ISO-approved, independently verified methodology that allows processors to provide customers with verifiable, trusted data demonstrating the tangible environmental benefits of responsible electronics management.
While the current version focuses on carbon emissions, future iterations will expand to include additional environmental metrics such as water usage, toxic material consumption, and overall toxicity footprint.
The calculator is available to all electronics recyclers and refurbishers—including non-e-Stewards-certified companies—with special discounted rates for the first 10 early adopters. The response has been swift and enthusiastic, with several spots already snapped up by both e-Stewards and non-e-Stewards certified processors alike.
CXtec's CEO Todd Zegers captured the positive industry feedback perfectly: "CXtec is very excited to be one of the first adopters. Finally, our industry will have the missing link to individually show our worth to our customers and the world in terms of avoided emissions—the elusive Scope 4."

| | Bridging Industries: e-Stewards at the i-SIGMA Conference & Expo | | |
Earlier this month, the e-Stewards team exhibited and presented at the i-SIGMA Conference & Expo, reinforcing a valuable partnership between the electronics recycling and information management industries.
Our Business Director Daniel Puckett delivered a well-attended session on Day 2, highlighting the opportunities that the ITAD space offers to those operating in information management or shredding services. Many shredding providers receive hard drives and e-waste from their customers creating a perfect opportunity for partnership with certified ITAD providers and electronic recyclers.
When not presenting, we attended several intriguing sessions on cyber-hygiene, data security, and risk management, learning a great deal about an industry that often services the same corporate clients as ours.
We greatly appreciated the opportunity to connect with the i-SIGMA community and encourage everyone in our industry to consider attending next year's conference. We will definitely be back!

Lead Auditor Training
e-Stewards, in partnership with Green Eye Partners, has completed yet another successful Lead Auditor Training for version 4.1 of the standard. The two-day intensive session held on April 14-15 equipped participants with comprehensive knowledge of the e-Stewards Standard and certification process. Congratulations to our newest certified e-Stewards auditors!
If you are interested in becoming certified as a Lead Auditor to the e-Stewards Standard, please contact Selena Turnock at selena@e-stewards.org to express your interest and be added to our participant list for the next available session – date and time to be determined.
| | Washington Set to Enact Right-to-Repair Law for Electronics | |
Washington state, home to e-Stewards' headquarters, is on track to become the latest state to guarantee consumers the right to repair their electronic devices. House Bill 1483, which passed the legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support, is now on Governor Bob Ferguson's desk and is widely expected to be signed into law.
The bill contains two key provisions with different implementation dates. First, for devices sold or used in Washington on or after July 1, 2021, manufacturers must provide independent repair providers and owners the same diagnostic tools, repair documentation, and parts that are available to authorized repair providers. Second, starting January 1, 2026, the law specifically targets "parts pairing"—a practice where manufacturers use software to prevent devices from working with non-original or third-party replacement parts.
HB 1483 sailed through both chambers of the legislature with overwhelming support, passing the state House on a 94-1 vote and the Senate 48-1, signaling strong support across party lines. If signed, Washington would become the sixth state to adopt electronics right-to-repair protections, joining New York, Oregon, California, Minnesota, and Colorado.
Heather Trim, Executive Director of Zero Waste Washington and a member of the e-Stewards Leadership Council, emphasized the bill's environmental and consumer benefits.
"Right to repair is truly zero-waste, because it helps reduce the impacts of extracting resources and manufacturing when people are able to keep their computers, cell phones, refrigerators and other appliances in working order for much longer," Trim said. "Saving money and being able to repair your own items is supported across party lines as shown by the strong bipartisan votes."
The legislation represents a significant step forward for both consumer rights and environmental sustainability in Washington state. As a Seattle-based organization, we take particular pride in our home state's leadership on this important issue.

e-Stewards Standard Tip
New to Version 4 of the e-Stewards Standard was adding a definition for "Qualified Smaller Components" – also known as QSCs. This definition is a conclusive list of specific parts, components, or accessories of electronics that may have direct reuse value, but for which full reuse requirements may not apply.
The current definition, updated by the Sanctioned Interpretation released in May of 2024, includes the following as QSCs:
- Barcode scanners
- Cables, cable splitters
- Chargers, charging blocks, power adapters
- Docking stations
- Fans
- Headsets
- Ink and toner cartridges
- CPUs, GPUs, and other integrated circuits
- Keyboards
- Mice
- Power supply units
- Printed circuit boards (e.g., RAM, graphics cards, network adapters)
- RFID readers/writers
- Switch modules
- Trackpads
- Transceivers
- Voltage and plug adapters
These specific items, as long as they do not have data-bearing capabilities and/or contain batteries, are exempt from some reuse requirements within the standard in order to encourage the direct reuse of these low-risk lower-value items. Individual testing requirements are not required to be associated with a specific serial or other identification number, though this does not negate the requirement that each item must be tested and deemed fully functional in order to be sold for direct reuse.
