Summer Reading is here, and we couldn't be more excited! As a former children's librarian the Summer reading program was always the most fun, most exhausting, and most affirming part of the year. This year we are subscribing to a new service called Beanstack to encourage more people to sign up for our summer reading challenges. You can sign up on our webpage or download the app.

Beanstack is a reading app that helps you log all the books you read. This is great for kids who maybe just read a few minutes at a time. Or for the reluctant reader who wants to read a big book, but gets discouraged by the goal of reading multiple books. Or kids who like a challenge of collecting incentives as they go along. Adults can also participate with our Reading Bingo challenge. Complete a different reading challenge activity and earn a badge. Don't worry if you still prefer paper reading logs or bingo sheets, we will have those too. For us, the more people reading for pleasure the happier the world will be.

We have a great line up of programs all summer long to keep kids of all ages busy and engaged with reading, learning, and exploring. You can see all of our programs on our webpage, or download the program guide, or pickup a paper copy at the library while they last.

Last, but not least, don't forget about helping to achieve our goal of $200,000 for our Solar Project, Here comes the Sun. Your donation will help us save on electric bills over the years. That means we can buy more books, host more programs and provide more fun in our community. Please reach out to donate or with questions.

See you at the library!

Solar Power for the library

Donations are coming in for this project, thank you! Many donors are honoring loved ones by donating $1,000 and naming a panel in their honor. If there is someone in your life who loved libraries this is a wonderful way to honor their life and legacy.

Introducing Beanstack: the world’s easiest way to keep track of all the books you read!

Beanstack is a digital reading platform and mobile app that helps people of all ages track their reading habits, minutes, and books, along with participating in community reading challenges.

When you create a Beanstack account for yourself or your family, you’re instantly connected to your local library’s reading programs, so you’ll get credit for every minute and every page. We’ll keep all your stats for you, cheer you on while you work towards your program goals, and let you know when you’ve earned prizes!

When your library’s program ends, you keep your account, and your reading history—it’s always free, and you can keep right on logging your leisure reading. When the next library program comes around, no need to re-register—just click on it, and you’re in.

To learn more about signing up, go to the Shepherdstown Public Library info page on Beanstack here

Mural in the Children's room

Over the course of the past year, artist Charlotte Puttock has been quietly working on a mural in the Children's room. Her inspiration came from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Stop in and take a look at how the seasons transition in this lovely piece. The artwork encourages children to be curious about nature and to find a quiet space to read. Donations in honor of the founder of First Books for Babies, Charlotte Porter, helped to fund this project. Thank you Charlotte for sharing your time and talent with the library.
