Like me, you are probably starting to really get in the mood for Fall. And whether that means Fall gardening, pumpkin spice everything, or cozying up under a blanket with a good book (my preference) then the library is here to help. We have lots of great new books for you to enjoy and topics to discover. Recently we held a community read collaboration with Shepherd University. The book Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass will be read across Shepherd's campus and by many book groups and individuals in our community. We had a nice turn out highlighting the importance of literacy and understanding the life of Frederick Douglass and his impact on American history. One of our activities included a Community Reading tree where participants were encouraged to write down the title of a book that influenced them in their lives. Some of the titles included: A Childs Garden of Verses, Leaves of Grass, Anne of Green Gables, Braiding Sweetgrass, The Little Prince, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Charlotte's Web, The Great Gatsby and many more. You can find The Community Reading tree in the big window of the adult reading room. Add your own title or read what other community members have added to the tree next time you are in the library.
We have a lot going on this month and our calendar is full. Towards the end of the month the Shepherdstown Public Library Foundation is offering a lecture about Legacy giving. This will be a very helpful information session for anyone considering leaving a legacy gift to a non-profit organization or creating a bequest in your will. There is more to it than just scribbling down a note at the bottom of your will. Archie Hoxton of Hoxton Planning and Management, and Allison Cox from Bowles Rice LLP will be here to explain the hows and whys of legacy giving. Please join us.
Halloween is a favorite for our town, and we love offering our free costume swap here at the library. This is great for kids who grow and grow. Kids can also be fickle. One day they want to be Spiderman for Halloween and the next day it might be a ninja princess. It helps to have options. So bring in your outgrown costumes and pickup some new.
Whatever your plans are for Fall we hope they include regular visits to the libraryy.
See you at the library!
