To drip or not to drip?
Be sure to protect your plumbing. During sustained periods of below-freezing temperatures:
|
|
- Drip and wrap outdoor faucets
-
Note that if you use styrofoam cover like shown in photo, it is not advised to drip water
- You may also choose let an interior faucet drip continuously while temperatures remain below freezing for an extended time - and especially if you lose power and/or are not able to heat your home indoors
- If possible, keep your home heated inside to an above-freezing temperature
- Open cabinet doors below sinks to expose plumbing to the heated air inside your home
|
|
|
Remember to turn off your faucets completely when temperatures return to above-freezing.

How to know if your pipes freeze and what to do
|
|
How will you know if your pipes freeze?
- If you turn on your faucet and there's no water, that could be an indicator
- Sounds in a wall where there's plumbing could also mean frozen pipes
- Wet sheetrock or water where it shouldn't be could also be the result of a plumbing break
Broken or frozen pipes are no fun - but here's what to do if it happens:
-
Turn off your home's water shutoff valve outside. It's located close to your water meter box. Check out this video tutorial.
- If you can't get the valve turned off yourself, call Public Works at 512-401-5550 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. If it's after hours, call our non-emergency Dispatch line at 512-260-4600 and press 0.

Our City crews have been braving the cold and working 'round the clock to treat icy bridges, overpasses and major intersections. It's important that we preserve road access for our Police and Firefighters so they may respond safely to calls. Let's help them by continuing to stay in, during this weather event. Thanks, Cedar Park!
